Whitening toothpaste

For about 5 years I have been buying all sorts of whitening toothpastes and some are quite expensive and they just don't work. However, last year in a generous offer my DH offered to pay for me to have my teeth whitened.

I have a lovely dentist who made up a plastic toothguard and then showed me how to put a tiny dot of special peroxide into the toothguard for each tooth and I wore this during the night for 8 days.

I cannot tell you how pleased I am. I have not gone bright white like the telly people, but I no longer have yellow teeth stained by tea and red wine.

She said I can give myself a top up (may be annually) if I want. So as my DS's 40th birthday party is this June, I will use the top up which I will only need to put on for 2 nights.

Now to the cost. Some of you (like some of my friends say I am totally mad) but the guard and 8 night treatment cost £300 and the top up phial cost £15 for a 2 day treatment.

I don't regret a penny of it and I no longer need to buy expensive toothpaste that doesn't work.

Final word - the dentist advised against people going into Beauty Salons where they whiten your teeth on the spot with a bright light. She says that dries out the tooth and is not good for the long term health of your teeth. grin

On second thoughts I think it cost £250 not £300 - sorry.

Deedaa Sun 23-Feb-14 20:25:19

I don't think you're mad at all. Nothing is as aging as stained yellow teeth (Queen Mother anyone?) so if you can afford it why not?

Deeda The Queen Mother's teeth were famously awful long before she was old. Of course, that never stopped her from smiling.

If it makes you feel good and you can afford it, go for it grin

DH was unhappy with his teeth as they were stained by strong coffee. We bought a well known brand of toothpaste with whitening properties and the same make of mouthwash which was to be used together. The result was way better than we expected, two items together came to about £6 and last for a week or two.
I bet your teeth are lovely NanKate.

It was interesting to read this - we have both just been to the dentist and are waiting for the moulds to arrive. I am looking forward to it! I used to smoke (at least 12 years ago) am fond of coffee too, and there is a definite discolouring. So thanks, Nankate!

Thanks everyone I expected a bit of criticism and it was nice to get the positive replies.

I wouldn't say my teeth are lovely but I am happy to see photos of myself with the family where I have normal coloured teeth not yellowing ones.

I must admit each morning after cleaning my teeth I do spend a moment admiring my gnashers grin

I hope you and your DH Ariadne are as pleased as I am with the results.

One small warning after about 5 days of using the mould at night my gums were a bit sore so I stopped for a couple of days and then resumed. The dentist said this was normal.

I would do it too, if I smoked. I don't, so the gel pens are fine for me, and only cost a few pounds. The red wine is my problem, but the gel takes my teeth back to a nice colour. Holding my lips back while the gel dries is the hardest part. I tend to do it when I am going out somewhere nice.

Worth every penny if it makes you feel better. I'm toying with the idea of having some colour put back in my hair for the same reason; it was a post retirement money saving plan but it's making me feel a bit colourless and I've realised it's getting me down a bit. My dentist said to use smokers toothpaste every so often; I don't smoke any more but my teeth stain really badly.

janerowena Mon 24-Feb-14 17:14:00

I had just one small grey streak until recently, so just used to put the odd temporary colour on occasionally. Now it is spreading along my parting. I was fine with it in the summer, but now, when I have less colour, it is really depressing me. I look dull and drained, so serious colouring is going to start soon.

NanKate Mon 24-Feb-14 17:40:14

We only have one life so if you want to have your hair coloured Tegan go for it !

I have felt a new found freedom since I had my teeth done and it sounds as if some of you ladies above are also at that point in life.

I bought a lovely purple fur (not real) collar today in the charity shop for £3.00. I can't wait for a cold snap to wear it. smile

Tegan Mon 24-Feb-14 17:53:04

Oh I love charity shops. My favourite one has a jacket in the window at the moment which [I think] matches a hat I've just bought. Hoping it's still there when I go shopping. Changed my mind about the hair colour. It took me ages to grow the low lights out from last time so I've bought one of those shampoos that make the white look nicer; I just hope it doesn't turn it blue confused.

Galen Mon 24-Feb-14 17:55:32

I have a lot of white streaks!

Galen Mon 24-Feb-14 17:56:50

The aveda shampoo is very good I find on my -white- silver hair.

Tegan Mon 24-Feb-14 18:11:16

Is that Blue Malva? We've got an Aveda shop in the next village;I'll get some [worried about the other stuff turning me blue still].

I would love to have whiter teeth, but I have several crowns at the front. I think I am right in saying that they cannot be whitened, so would no longer match. The cost of replacing them would be huge. Any suggestions would be welcome, such as a product which can be painted on.

Ana Mon 24-Feb-14 20:32:40

I'm glad you posted that, shysal because I have a similar problem, plus one of my crowns (very obvious, right at the front!) shows the black base of the crown at the gumline. Mind you, I have had it for twenty-plus years.

I would dearly love to have whiter teeth. I don't think there's a solution other than implants or having them all out and a complete set of glowing dentures! grin

Deedaa Mon 24-Feb-14 21:01:59

I have the same problem with crowns. I'm not sure why my last dentist seemed to deliberately match the crowns to my most yellow teeth.

NanKate Mon 24-Feb-14 21:12:02

You are right that crowns cannot be whitened. Also I have some white fillings on some front teeth. However as my dentist made sure I did I not lighten my teeth too much they are all relatively similar in colour which works well and makes them look natural.

The telly people who have identical white teeth look unnatural I think.

Also Ana even though you can see the black base at the gum line you very rarely reveal that much of your teeth.

It maybe worth discussing with your dentist.

Ana Mon 24-Feb-14 21:32:34

I'm sorry, NanKate, but your assertion that 'you very rarely reveal that much of your teeth' is incorrect - certainly with the top front teeth!

I've just tried a very small smile in the mirror and the black line is obvious.

I am interested in trying the gel pens Janerowena but know little about them and there seem to be various brands and prices available. Any advice on choosing a suitable effective one would be appreciated...i.e. is it worth paying for a more expensive brand, and do you buy refills or a new pen when it has finished? Thanks you.

NanKate Tue 25-Feb-14 07:40:21

Ok Ana I think it must be the way my mouth works that doesn't show my gums much.

At least with this thread all the different options are being voiced.

janerowena Tue 25-Feb-14 14:11:47

cazthebookworm I just buy any old cheap pen on Ebay. Then I don't mind if they dry out if I forget to use them for a while.
This is the last one I bought.

It gives you a bit of a pick-up, especially in the summer, without looking too obvious.

I bet Amazon do them as well, if you prefer. I do have a vauge and distant memory of buying one in a shop, but it cost about £8 years ago.

cazthebookworm Tue 25-Feb-14 14:21:24

Thanks for that janerowena, I followed the link and have ordered one, at that price you can't go wrong. I was always a bit nervous about buying a teeth whitening product as I wasn't sure how safe they were, but I feel reassured now. Watch this space. grin
