Favourite 1960s outfit

It was so easy to run up one of those wee shift dresses! I had a favourite empire line pattern and was able to buy lovely cottons cheaply in Bazaar Street in Nairobi. You could also get them made for you inexpensively there. Those were the days!

When I was a student in Neuchatel in the late 60's I bought a tiny little yellow shirt dress and wondered why I kept getting my bottom pinched. When I came home again to Scotland my mother's eyebrows disappeared up into her hair and I wore the dress as a tunic over white trousers. Happy Days !
The one common sentiment from everybody's posts is that we all knew we were the bee's knees - oh for that confdence of youth now.

I used to work in Ludgate Hill in the 1960s near the derelict canals which are now rather upmarket ! I had to wear business type clothes then and dress up at the weekends. What fun it was.

Cream jumbo cord smock dress with heavy cream lace collar, very short, worn with matching cream tights and black low-healed patent leather shoes. I had long hair, but never wore it loose as I hated it draping over my face, I usually had a French pleat or something similar, but like rosesarered, I also had a shoulder length hair piece on a velvet band that I wore over it (I still have it)

A very short emerald green paisley design dress with mandarin collar [all the rage] which barely covered my assets. Worn with cream lacy tights and black and cream two tone sling backs.Hair either put up in big 'curls' a bit Barbara Windsor-ish or I wore a long hair piece in the same brown as my own hair. Wig boutiques were everywhere and not expensive then either.A size 10 back then and I still thought I was on the chubby side next to a couple of my froends [stick thin and fashionable.]Happy days!

It was the days before blowdrying or straighteners, so impossible to get my unruly hair into a Cathy McGowan smooth bob. Still trying as bobs have become fashionable again, but giving in once more

I used to get a lot of my clothes from Henrys in Brum - cheap and cheerful. I was always being told I looked like Miss Diane from Crossroads.

My dad used to call me 'Quaint Mary' because of the type of 60s clothes I wore, some of which I made on our ancient treadle sewing machine. Thinking back, I must have been really annoying to have in the same room as I would pound away noisily on the treadle in the corner of the sitting room, making dresses or skirts for the weekend, whilst they were trying to watch the TV.

A lovely light blue short sleeved dress about 2" above my knees with a cap to match. Black high heels and tights instead of stockings. Because I was not in sack cloth and ashes I think my dad thought that I was a trollop.

You were lucky kitty, I was told that I looked like Elsie Tanner or Kathy Kirby (not too bad!)

I had two favourite outfits: a black and white swirly mini dress, worn with white tights and black patent boots, and a royal blue dress with red buttons, worn with red shoes, bag, earrings and necklace!!

I also remember sleeping in rollers to try to get my poker straight hair to curl under plus crossed grips to get the curl at the front. People said I looked like Sandie Shaw so, naturally, I tried really hard to become her

I do think we were lucky to have gone through that era of brightly coloured clothes. Today's fashions for girls don't seem to be so vibrant and fun.

i have two young grandsons so perhaps those of you with grand daughters will tell me what is on trend now. Having said that one of my grandsons did have an outfit covered in red stars !

A- line mini dress in silk with swirls of green, yellow, orange and mauve. I wore mauve sling back, kitten heel shoes and a handbag to match. Hair up in petals and I thought I was the bees knees.
I had a fabulous pair of chisel toed shoes in two toned brown with a strap across and a stacked heel, they were horrendously expensive and I wore them until they literally fell apart.

I had a few little Sambo Dollyrocker dresses plus one Dollyrocker floral trouser suit in the '60s. My first two were c/o my mum to help me get over a broken heart when I was 15. I adored the styles and often reminisce about them with my sister. I also have memories of a beautiful Black Watch lurex tartan ball-gown by Mary Quant in an old-fashioned "Flora MacDonald" style with lots of deep frills, which I wore with silver Christian Dior stockings. The dress was a bit scratchy. I wore it for my first and only ball. It sounds awful but it was gorgeous! This was on a student nurse's salary! I wish I had hung on to those '60s clothes now.

What would our granddaughters think if they read this thread?

Forgot the short yellow PVC mac with matching sou'wester and yellow wellies. Perfect for the rainy season in Nairobi. I could be seen a mile away.

Black and white checked pinafore dress with black lacy stockings and a white polo neck. Before I went to Africa, I made myself several shift dresses in psychedelic cottons. Good thing my new friends there were usually wearing sun glasses! Oh and it was still the era of Crimplene in which I made a turquoise shift, uncrushable for travelling. Never could get my hair to grow but teased it into a bouffant style with rollers every night - couldn't do that now!

I had a linen mini dress, worn with a lilac and white blouse underneath. The best bit were my white leather boots, and matching shoulder bag. My hair was in a low ponytail. This was a special outfit for a wedding!

My all time favourite was a navy mini dress with white polka dots. Biba of course. It barely covered my bottom and had enormous bishop sleeves and a pussy cat bow at the neck which trailed down below the hem. I wore it every where, usually with a pair of brown Cathy McGowan "Granny"shoes. Hair was long and straight and very Cathy McGowan, eye shadow was Rust from Biba and lipstick was brown. I was soooo cool

I saved all my birthday and Christmas money and bought an op art dress and white courreges boots. With my Mary Quant hair cut I thought I looked fabulous!
