Do you still use talcum powder ?

When I was staying with my DIL recently she commented on my lavender talc in the bathroom. She wanted to know where I put it, never having used it before.

I told her in the hot weather I smoothed it under my boobs and on the inside of my thighs, explaining that I did this with my pants on as it is dangerous to get talc near one's private parts.

I buy the small pack of 4 talcs from m and s as they are convenient to take on travels and do not clutter the bathroom.

I am going to make some shopping bags from plastic coated fabric and a friend tells me a light dusting of talc will help the fabric go through the sewing machine smoothly.

NanKate Yes! Following in my mum's footsteps, as it were, we all take baby powder to the beach - great for dealing with sand in crevices before you put your shoes back on.

From that delphiforums page (near the top) there is a link to an "ingredients dictionary" of the many substances used in cosmetics. Some fascinating reading.

A long list of mineral powder brands and products with ingredients at people.delphiforums.com/tracikenyon/IngredList22405.html.

I shall leave you to peruse them yourself!

Do the new mineral face powders contain talc?

Elegran Mon 13-Oct-14 21:15:04

Interestingly, the list contains several face powders containing talc (but none with any asbestos) I had never really considered what went into face powder, but I would never have thought of talc.

Safety of talc - the FDA have a report at www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductsIngredients/Ingredients/ucm293184.htm

They analysed samples from four bulk cosmetic talc suppliers, looking for asbestos contamination, and found none in any of them. (but five other suppliers did not comply with their request for samples)

Apparently the reason there was some concern was because talc is a silicate (Chemically, talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate with a chemical formula of Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.) and "Asbestos is also a naturally occurring silicate mineral, but with a different crystal structure. Both talc and asbestos are naturally occurring minerals that may be found in close proximity in the earth. Unlike talc, however, asbestos is a known carcinogen. For this reason, FDA considers it unacceptable for cosmetic talc to be contaminated with asbestos."

The link has a list of suppliers and (more usefully for the public) brands and products containing talc with no asbestos found. Johnson's Baby Powder is on the list.

I like Cuticura which I use sparingly with a big fluffy powder puff.

Bought a gift set in M and S sale and there was a large tin of Rose scented talc. I never use the stuff and passed it onto a friend who needs to provide raffle prizes. It will probably become one of those raffle prizes that does the rounds by the sound of this forumgrin

Talc banned ???? It is still available in our local Tesco, bought some a few weeks ago, Cussons Imperial Leather.

Johnson's baby powder isn't banned, Eleanorre. It's widely availabe.

Eleanorre Mon 13-Oct-14 09:00:27

I just remembered ! The gas man who came to see us used in in our boiler to stop something sticking. He said it was the only cure for the problem so it has it's uses.

Eleanorre Mon 13-Oct-14 08:58:40

I never use it ,it must be 30 years since I did probably because it was a present. I used to love the smell of Johnson's baby powder now banned of course.

bellaboon Mon 13-Oct-14 08:33:14

Yes, it is very available in stores everywhere. I buy Johnsons and Johnsons baby powder. There are other brands as well. However, I cannot find my favorite brand anymore - Baby Magic baby powder.

Baby talc smells clean and fresh and is inexpensive. Johnston's baby talc and also own brand available in Asda. Would be lost without it.....
Perfect for under boobs and body creases. Any dusting of talc in the bathroom I hope up with damp kitchen roll, then the used towel that's heading for the laundry basket.

I have fond memories of using Johnson's baby powder liberally on my sister when she was a baby as she is 10 years younger than me. I used talc a little when I was young in the 50s and remember with fondness that mum always seemed to have a shower of talc on her clothes and by her dressing table. I haven't noticed it in shops for years now. Is it it still easy to obtain?

inishowen Sun 12-Oct-14 16:27:16

Talc is great to use when dressing your grandchildren after being on the beach. It seems to get rid of the sand on their bodies. i still use talc every day after my shower, so does hubbie.

Still use it - I had heard about the problems but I’d rather take the risk and smell good.

Essential for getting these dam stockings on, makes a mess on the bedroom carpet though.

Tegan the best thing for preventing blsters on your feet is Vaseline. Absolutely slather your feet in it then put on your socks and boots - your feet will slide around inside for a bit but eventually settle. The bonus is when you take off your boots you will have feet like a baby's!

Tegan Sun 12-Oct-14 11:00:35

I use it on my feet if I'm planning to do a long walk and wear walking boots [not that I do that much these days] as I think it helps prevent blisters.

I haven't used it for about 45 years and don't miss it so obviously it was never needed for me. I am sure I read where they had found particles in cancers the reason they has come to that conclusion I didn't stop for that reason it just seemed to disappear of my radar after the babies were no longer babies because I did use it then

Unfortunately some people use it instead of washing and the smell of talc on an unwashed body or uriney pants turns my stomach and having been seeing members of the public in a small room until recently I can assure you that's what some people do

Both my grandmothers used talcum powder every day of their lives and both lived in their mid 90's and NEITHER of them died of cancer! I have been using talcum powder all my adult and teenage life and I am in perfect health. I apply over my private areas as it keeps me dry and fresh all day. Both grandmas did and so do I. This new link of baby powder and ovarian cancer is just hoppy cot!! Please, if you believe and fear everything you read and hear in the media, you will never live an independent life. Every decade they are coming out with new woes, and then years later, it ended up nothing. Grow up.
