After looking for ages for nice, but not expensive, tunic tops, and not being very successful, I accidentally found myself on a website selling clothes to Indian ladies, and saw some lovely items they called Kurties, but I call tunics, at very reasonable prices, and am tempted to order. Do you think they`d mind an order from a non Indian person, and has anyone on here tried Indian clothes, not saris, obviously?

No. It's too long (unless he's an exceptionally tall 12 year old!).

Do you think this would look good on a twelve year old white boy, with jeans?

Nellie - I've been tempted by the shalwar kameez too - it's a sort of very feminine trouser suit. I need to hide my legs!

I`ve just had another delivery from what is getting to be a favourite Indian website. This time I decided to try the jewellery, and ordered 5 necklace and earring sets. I don`t wear earrings, so will be seeking to offload 5 pairs of dangly sparkly earrings, not the real deal, obviously, at their prices, but at least I can afford several changes of necklace. I am very impressed at their speedy deliveries, I ordered these late on Tuesday night, and they were delivered at lunchtime today.

Thanks

I ordered large, despite having lost weight over the last few months, but I didn`t want them to be tight fitting, I`m a 42C bust size, and their large is 44, but they aren`t too big, so maybe they do err a bit on the smaller aspect. One of the kurtis is a bit longer than the others, but I took a chance because I liked it, but it`s nearly as long as my shorter dresses, they are 41" and this is 39", I may wear it as a dress in very warm weather.

What are the sizes like? I have a very broad back and Indian ladies tend to be small boned.

My new clothes arrived at lunchtime today, only ordered late on Sunday evening! I LOVE them! The washing instructions say to wash in cold water. Three of the kurtis are very fine see through material, but come with a matching camisole type garment to wear underneath. I`ve got four kurtis, and two of what they call umbrella dresses, loose fitting to wear in summer over my nightie in the morning, instead of a warm dressing gown. I`ll definitely shop with them again.

I live near Leicester and actually shop on the Golden Mile. My bezzie when she visits from Cyprus shops at our fave charity shop ''ASHA'' .. we love it and buy lots( the prices are unbelieveable!). I am wearing a long sleeved split tunic over huge baggy trousers .. worn as lounge type stuff, nicer than jim jams. My friend takes lots of the more ''bling'' salwar kameze back to Cyprus and everyone is awestruck! Parking is bad but we park in the side streets behind the shop and so far not had a problem! LOVE this shop and the clothes re fab, colourful and well made, a lot are hand made too. C U both there.. :-) :-)
PS - the shop mentioned for Kurties was on the tele the other evening, the colour of the saris were amazing!

I see it is a Leicester number- no surprise there then smile

There are pages and pages of kutis on that site!

I quite like this one - but only got to about page 5.

Lots of them would be lovely if the hem part was cut off, they are a bit too long and fancy as they are.

Some of the shops on the Leicester Golden Mile are just amazing- lots of different Indian cultures and styles present too- in all sorts of different qualities. Best time for bargains is in the Sales after Diwali- as Diwali is the main dressing up day for Hindus there, but also other Indians who celebrate with them, and also Eid a bit earlier. Really worth a visit.

Denny Andrews link.

Soutra Mon 19-May-14 12:24:12

Thought I had posted a suggestion to Google "Denny Andrews" - lovely quality clothes, but seem to have lost it! Just sorry I don't have a link.

Why would they mind if you go into the shop? They want custom and will not bother who buys what. The problem with some Indian clothes is that they are not designed to be washed in washing machines!I have this info from an Indian friend.Fabrics are delicate, and in India people know where and what to buy [according to their incomes] but vast amounts of cheap stuff is imported over here.Colours often 'run' and seams come apart. That said, if you buy cheaply and handwash the items and don't expect them to last too long, they will be good for hot weather. The main thing I don't like though is the very strong colours, but if you have a dark-ish skin colour you should suit them. All wrong for fair skinned women.

I too live near Leicester's Golden Mile and enjoy the window displays and have often said I wonder if they would mind if I went in- my husband is convinced they would be as they always are very polite and encouraging in any shops and restaurants so we are going to do it one day soon. See you there Kitty?

Nelliemoser Mon 19-May-14 10:04:23

I have been impressed by the way shalwar kameez and these other Asian clothes seem to come in the most wonderfully colour coordinated sets.

I encountered a group of women at Manchester airport obviously heading for Pakistan or India all dressed in their very best.

They make most Brits look very scruffy.

One of our routes into town is along Leicester's 'Golden Mile' and I love looking at all the fabulous window displays in the clothing shops. I do sometimes think that I will stop and investigate the shops but the parking is absolutely horrendous and I give up. sad

People in Leicester complain about the number of sets of traffic lights along the Golden Mile but they do allow the chance to enjoy all the glorious colours in the windows. smile

Mishap what a good idea, I never thought of buying a kurtis to wear as a nightie.

Galen, you`re right about the farashas, I hadn`t seen them till you mentioned them, they`re gorgeous, not me, but lovely all the same!
I`m taking the plunge in a little while and ordering some things. I had been thinking of getting a couple of thin Kaftans to replace my warm dressing gowns in summer, so will take a peek at those as well.

Mishap Sun 18-May-14 22:54:04

I have bought the kurtis from someone locally who imports them - they are thin, but then they are cheap. They make great summer nighties.

Last year, when I was in Yorkshire with my sister, we went to the Bombay Stores in Bradford. It was wonderful, full of fabulous Asian style clothes, fabrics and jewellery. There were also very pretty shoes in lovely colours. The fabrics were very reasonably priced and I bought some to make costumes for belly dancing class but I haven't yet had time to do any sewing.
(Sorry if this sounds like an advert. I have no connection with them. It was just so impressive.)

Charleygirl Sun 18-May-14 18:15:09

What a lovely sight. I loved some of the short tops and they look to be well made, not flimsy.

Galen Sun 18-May-14 17:34:03

Ooh! Loved the farashas!
Might hey one for evening wear.
Only trouble. Don't think the pearls would go with neckline. But I really love the blue ones
