Short or longer hair?

Until about three years ago I had a medium length bob, then I had my hair cut into a short (very short) layered style-now I have seriously gone off this style, think it looks too harsh.I want to grow it a bit longer, grow out the layers and have a short bob.I am just thinking it's going to be an awful long time to grow out all the layers and how I will cope with this? Has anybody any hints as to what I can do with my hair in the meantime?

I have been growing out the layers in my hair for about a year now. The longest part is now more or less shoulder length while the shortest is somewhere between my ear lobes and chin. It is long enough to clip most of it up at the back of my head, leaving straggly strands at the sides of my face which I kid myself make me look like Joanna Lumley. grin Eventually, I shall get it cut and restyled so that it is all the same length.

Mine's long and up too. Hangover from when I was a dancer. Also the easiest to cope with. It gets washed (not every day now; no need), brushed and twirled up. The twirling up takes a few seconds. Can't be arsed with anything complicated that needs 'care'.

Mine is short and does its own thing regardless of the "style" but luckily it always looks ok so I'm grateful. I pay £8 for a dry cut once a month. My friend pays over £40 and still hates her hair. I had long hair as a young woman but wouldn't want it now. My dad was a hairdresser and remembered when women started having their long hair cut to "the bob" in the 1930s. He said they were often amazed to find their hair was naturally curly but the weight of it had always straightened it.

I am also unable to the do blow drying thing (hedgehog and blowlamp?) so have bought an electric wand thingy which I wind my hair round and it blows it dry. Its the best thing I have ever find for very fine very straight hair. I also use 'product' to thicken it.

I gave up paying all that money for a wash, cut and finish and now get just as good a dry cut for £12.50 and no fuss.

My hair is always a work in progress, and at the moment I've decided to grow it a couple of inches to about chin length.

On Wednesday I'm going to a new hairdresser and I'm quite nervous as I can't stand the 'scissor happy' type, and you never know until they start cutting.................... shock

I have curly hair and sometimes I can be @rsed to straighten it and sometimes I can't. Trouble is its chin length with layers longer on top but if I leave it to curl naturally it looks like a permed head and I hate it but I just can't be bothered faffing about with dryer and straighteners every day everyone says the curly mop ages me but mostly I just can't be bothered my granddaughter cuts it for me about every 2mths and if she knows just how I like it and if it goes wrong I can just slap her..grin

etheltbags1 Mon 11-Aug-14 21:46:22

trying to grow mine out too, I had it cut as I get so impatient to get it dry at waist length but I hate going to hairdressers so Im growing it out now. I find using my straighteners is best as even the raggiest ends go straight. I will eventually go and get the bottom trimmed unless I can get DD to do it for me unless I get so sick I get it cut again.

Waist length? Good heavens, mine wouldn't grow that long if I lived to be 100! Isn't it strange how some people's hair grows very long and others' won't grow much beyond shoulder-length?

My DGDs would love to have Rapunzel-like locks, but their hair length seems to be self-limiting as well...sad

Mine isn't quite waist length, though it used to be. I cut it myself when it needs a trim. This is the method: brush all to one side and twist into a rope, snip the last couple of inches off; brush all to the other side and do the same but twisting the other way. Nae bother and you can do the snipping over a bin so no hair to vacuum up either.

Lona my life is a WIP grin

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and give up on trying to grow it into the style I fancy sad It's just too damn thick.

At least with the previous style it is a bit easier to manage, if it won't go down, I gel it and leave it spiky!

I have always preferred long hair, it has been cut many times, but I always let it grow again, usually it just gets put in an elastic band somewhere on top of my head. it has been likened to a pineapple top by others. I usually cut it myself by putting it in the band and just cutting straight across, then it falls in layers. The alternative is gong to a hairdresser here, and coming out with the same haircut as everyone else.

Nonnie grin I've given up on mine!

I am going to cancel my hairdressing appointment this week as I think if I get there I might give in,or he will cut off more than I want.I have bought some 'product' ( sea salt texturizing?)it doesn't seem to make much difference I think I will just have to live with it looking messy until I can get it long enough to trim properly. Looking at the length of the layers on top that could be about a year!

ffinnochio Tue 12-Aug-14 17:56:35

Good choice JP . Go long I say.

Some women do look good with short hair [but I am not amongst them] so usually settle for a slightly layered bob, sometimes a short bob and sometimes a medium one.If left alone it goes curly, and looks like a bad perm, so I always blow dry it so be straight-ish and shiny. This style works well for older women, easy to maintain but not too short or harsh looking.Very slightly shorter at the back [you have to tell the stylist very sternly that you don't want it too short at the back!] I have it trimmed ever 6-8 weeks in a dry cut which costs £14.Twice a year I have blonde highlights put in, which seems enough to hide all the grey.

merlotgran Tue 12-Aug-14 19:37:06

Short hair suits me but I'm fed up with the maintenance. I have grown it to chin length but with long layers rather than a bob. It always seems to look at its best the day before I've booked a trim. hmm

rosequartz Tue 12-Aug-14 19:55:06

If I had left mine in the slightly layered bob which I tried to grow it into, it would have looked like an untidy haystack after the damp and rain today, even if it had started out as a sleek style after blow-drying this morning.

After two years of struggling to grow it, DH commented that it looked like a 'thatched roof', so that is when I gave in with the struggle and had it cut short again.

Penstemmon Tue 12-Aug-14 20:32:15

I have curly (unruly) , chin length, layered hair which I wash and leave (approx 3 x week). I add Argan oil daily as it is very dry. I have it cut and coloured every 6-8 weeks by a hairdresser I have had for 24 years and is now a friend . He comes to the house and spends the day as my DDs, DH and sometimes a friend or two also come to the kitchen salon! Costs a bomb but I don't care!

Penstemmon Tue 12-Aug-14 20:33:07

ps best thing about kitchen salon is not having a mirror in front of me!

Lona Wed 13-Aug-14 08:52:33

And very pretty it looks too Pen! (I keep seeing your pic on fb)
I am not a stalker! grin

Marelli Wed 13-Aug-14 15:55:13

And I have met Penstemmon, and I can vouch for her very pretty hair! smile

Ana Wed 13-Aug-14 16:05:00

I've seen Penstemmon's photo on one of the get-together threads, and that curly style really is very attractive! I always wanted curly hair - loved it when perms were in fashion.

Penstemmon Wed 13-Aug-14 22:21:14

I had a perm inthe 70s! My hair got curlier with each pregnancy! Tanks gor the compliments. That is why I pay out to my hairdresser otherwise I look like my pic on GN!

Nelliemoser Wed 13-Aug-14 23:06:45

I really have no choice but to wear my hair short. If it gets longer than about two and a half inches it begins to corkscrew round and is unmanageable.

It would only look reasonable if straightened every day and I CBA with that.
