I'm a size 20/22 and 5'5" tall and, with a mid thigh top, I don't look like humpty dumpty! I may even go out in them!grin

Ana Sun 05-Oct-14 23:07:46

You do look nice, ethel!

Lona Sun 05-Oct-14 22:46:39

Don't be grumpy ethel you look really nice and jolly in your pic! smile

merlotgran Sun 05-Oct-14 22:44:39

Ethel's turned blue so I've just raced over to have a look and it says she already is sixty confused

annodomini Sun 05-Oct-14 22:41:08

Sweeping statement that 'most' older men wear baggy jog pants and dirty polo shirts! Not one of the gentlemen who attend our U3A meetings meets that description.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 05-Oct-14 22:28:53

Sweet little babba Ethel. smile

Anya Sun 05-Oct-14 22:06:47

pompa you made me LOL!

etheltbags1 Sun 05-Oct-14 21:39:10

Seriously does anyone like older men or men of any age wearing baggy jog pants or dirty polo shirts, which is what most older men seem to wear. I must admit that my late FIL was immaculate he wore his best shirt and tie right up to the day he was admitted to hospital which turned out to be his last day.
Well, Ive turned 'blue' so you can all have a gawp.
Pompa I think I hit a few raw nerves there did I, I also thought that socks with sandals were just to bad to mention.

annodomini Sun 05-Oct-14 21:25:53

Nothing wrong with being 'nearly 60'. I wish I was. grin And Hey! Lay off pompa. He is entitled to his opinion. This is a 'grandparents' site', not just for grandmothers.

pompa Sun 05-Oct-14 21:21:38

Well that really got the conversation going smile

Those of you that know me of old. know that I like to play devils advocate and stir things up, so don't take me too seriously. But PLEASE shoot me down, poorly or not.

Regarding leggings, I am talking about them when worn as the primary item, not when accompanied with a long jumper, mini skirt etc, as you say that is the same as tights. Regarding jeans, a well cut pair of jeans does wonders for a ladies bum. (as well as my blood pressure)

At least one lady agrees with me re boots.

Etheltbags1 - your comment regarding male wardrobe is scary - have you seen the contents of mine ?, by the way I also wear socks with sandals. My DW would love to burn most of it, especially my favourite work shirt that is full of holes and covered in glue and paint.
OMG even I would draw the line at speedos, I would look like a haggis with a rubber band around the middle.
.

etheltbags1 Sun 05-Oct-14 21:08:53

Im not in the best of moods with being nearly 60 and a MAN criticising womens clothes was a bit much when you look around and see the state of most older men, I could pewk.

Ana Sun 05-Oct-14 21:01:35

Goodness, you're on a roll tonight, etheltbags1! hmm

etheltbags1 Sun 05-Oct-14 20:58:30

Pompa, you are being really horrible and old fashioned, what difference is there between a skirt and thick tights and a skirt /dress and leggings.
I like leggings as I have less than perfect legs and wear them as tights.
I agree that anyone of any age that wear leggings showing their bottom who have a less than perfect shape, look bad.
If I wear leggings without a dress/skirt, I always wear a long jumper. Leggins are warm for the winter, convenient draught free and above all comfortable.
I hate to see old men with baggy crotches, high trousers hitched up and in the swimming baths I hate to see speedo trunks. I also hate baggy jog bottoms in men, I don't like to see the outline of their sex organs wobbling to and fro. I equally hate pole shirts on old men usually with egg stains on them, I also hate to see men with suits that are over about 10 years old (remember 'Open all Hours' with Ronnie Barker with his demob suit, hilarious but best kept for comedy).
so move with the times old man and open your mind.

Ana Sun 05-Oct-14 20:49:27

Strangely enough, I was having a discussion with DD about boots and skirts today, and we both agreed that ankle boots with skirts usually look awful!

Purpledaffodil Sun 05-Oct-14 20:39:34

Obviously the anaesthetic is still affecting you Pompa. Tight jeans and Jeggings are very similar in effect except there is usually more bottom revealed in the former. Which would certainly not explain your predilection I'm suregrin. Would not dream of gunning down a sick man of course. Get well soon flowers
I agree Lundylinda . GN is such a useful site with many lovely people on it. Welcome to you.wine

I've been in serious trouble for my opinions re leggings before, but hey ho, lets make a few more enemies. I think that tight leggings are one of the worst fashion items to arrive for many years. IMO they rarely look good and in many cases look awful to my eye. If you are young, give me a mini skirt and a good pair of pins, for the older woman a nicely tailored skirt takes a lot of beating, and at any age a good pair of tight jeans - wow.
Whilst I'm on pet hates, ankle length boot with skirts.

OK ladies, I set myself up, now you can gun me down ( I would point out that I am a fashion icon - NOT)

lundylinda Sun 05-Oct-14 15:20:28

Yes Purpledaffodil. It's lovely being able to join in with so many for advice and hearing about trends, successes and failures. I'm new and really look forward to logging in.

Purpledaffodil Sun 05-Oct-14 15:09:19

Thanks for that Lundylinda. When the Marks pair I ordered online in wide fitting were too tight, I thought my calves must be even huger than I thought. Interestingly, several pairs in the shop were too tight but sadly the ones that fitted were man made which was not what I really wanted. As I haven't worn them yet, I may well have a look at other shops especially Hotter and see if I can find better ones in leather. What a useful thread this is smile

lundylinda Sun 05-Oct-14 12:56:30

Just a quick update on my search for boots in Exeter yesterday. Found a pair in Hotter called 'Mystery'. Felt pleased because they were just right in a standard fitting. Evans had lots of choice but majority were in man made material. Marks' and Clarks' too tight.

janerowena Sat 04-Oct-14 23:48:43

'Yours' also do wider fittings for feet and legs. I've just had to start looking, I thought no-one did them but actually quite a few places do. Shoe Tailor is another one.

If you find a pair of leggings too flimsy and cheap - wear two pairs.

Scaredycat1 Sat 04-Oct-14 22:00:32

Good idea yogagran

Atqui Sat 04-Oct-14 20:25:01

Mail order or trip to Bath... duo boots have various widths. I have opposite problem , my legs are the only thin bit. I probably look like a lollipop!

yogagran Sat 04-Oct-14 20:17:42

Everyone on this thread has been so enthusiastic about leggings /Jeggings that I feel really inspired to go shopping and try some with tunic tops. I was always doubtful about what to wear on my feet, but these posts have given me the suggestions I needed. Thanks everyone.

How about a regular "style" thread to inspire those of us who feel a little left behind by fashion but would like to be a bit braver?

suzied Sat 04-Oct-14 18:32:29

Uniqlo are my favourite for jeans / leggings. They only have shops in London I think but you can order online. Their jeans and leggings are rally comfortable and come in a good size range .

Grannyknot Sat 04-Oct-14 17:00:46

Long tops with them is the answer (no Peter Pan).

littleflo Sat 04-Oct-14 16:24:10

Thanks Lona, Probably because I was Peter Pan from the neck down and pantomime dame from the neck up.
