Do you still wear jeans?

I'm fairly new to gransnet so I hope I'm not rehashing an old thread but is there an age when you're past your sell-by date for wearing jeans? I'm a baby boomer and we were the first "jeans generation". I'm still fairly slim and feel comfortable wearing them but don't want to look like mutton dressed up as lamb.

I wear jeans sometimes, to the amusement of my DD , because I began to wear them again aged 60, after not doing since my early 30s!

I grew up on a farm in Canada. My mother wore practical but not very nice jeans over her house dress when working in the barn so I know she associated jeans with hard, dirty work.

When I was not quite 22 and about to get married, Mum asked if I would now get my long hair cut and start wearing nice house dresses instead of the jeans I always wore. Sorry Mum. I no longer have the long hair but I'm still a jeans wearer at 68!

I like slim, stretchy dark denim or black jeans best, or jeggings/treggings with a tunic/long jumper (many women I know wear leggings but that's a step too far/skinny for me to feel good). I think it's great that in our generation of women we don't feel we have to conform to some idea of what older women should wear but can choose what we like and feel comfortable wearing.

I agree with jeanA, who cares? Wear what you like as long as it is not dowdy and boring. I am more concerned about wearing something appropriate to my shape than my age. If I like it that is all that matters.

Love not wearing suits since I retired.

Soutra Fri 12-Dec-14 09:32:24

It actually took me nearly 4 years of retirement to wean myself off "smart" trousers ! Jeans and cords in winter, linen trousers in summer and the "smarty pants" only get a very occasional airing. So much simpler.

waisted!!

I wear black jeans boot cut and high wasted usually per Una Roma cut- they seem to look quite smart with tunics or longish sweaters. I don't wear trousers every day I like to alternate with skirts and dresses. Cords for the golf course in winter same cut though. Wide leg linen trousers for the summer though.

Handynan I think the concept of 'mutton dressed as lamb' is now outdated.
It's ok to wear anything you like, that suits you, is comfortable, and if you care about such things, whether it's stylish and appropriate to the occasion.
Not everyone cares about the last two, and that's ok too wink

mollie65 Fri 12-Dec-14 08:36:27

yes - I wear jeans most of the time (family gatherings excepted )
I am 68 but slim in the leg so wear skinny jeans with a long top (though I hate the stiff material used in some jeans - looking at you M and S)
my favourites are H&M and Firetrap bought on Ebay ( perish the thought of paying for them new) and only need to turn up the hem as I am a 'shortie'
agree with earlier posters - being in the IT business all those years and having to dress smartly to wear comfortable jeans and long tops is heaven. grin

I have been wearing jeans since I was 15 and at college - 50 years ago. Eeeek. We used to sit in the bath with our Levis on in the hope they would shrink to our shape. Love jeans and jeggings. Wouldn't know what to wear if I didn't have them. Don't like bootleg as I am fairly short.

Marmight Fri 12-Dec-14 08:32:25

I wear them every day - so comfy and stretchy and disguise the wobbly bits

J52 Fri 12-Dec-14 08:24:43

Another Jean wearer here. DH dedicated to Levi's wears them daily unless going out smart.

The only thing that annoys me I'd the dye they use theses days. It is very unstable and comes off on chairs. X

I love my jeans. The skinnier the better shock

I wear them casually at weekends and dress them up with floaty tops too. Can't wear them during the week at work though sadly.

FlicketyB Fri 12-Dec-14 07:34:53

Jeans and jeggings most of the time.

Jeans are great everyday wear. Uniqlo super stretch skinny jeans are super comfortable and the plain black ones quite smart. I wear with relaxed fit sweaters or sweatshirts, or dress them up a bit with a belt and a white or stripey shirt and with a jacket or long cardi.

It's the first time in my life that I've been grateful for my short chubby legs cause I do think they look better in leggings than the skinny legs I always wanted.

yogagran Thu 11-Dec-14 22:47:10

Jeans orJeggings nearly all the time. I have several pairs in varying stages of wear.
So comfortable and practical.
On the rare occasions that I wear a skirt the dog looks at me in disgust and goes to his bed as he knows that he won't be coming with me!

Anya Thu 11-Dec-14 22:36:24

I spent my working life in smart suits and now I'm retired I rarely wear anything but jeans.

Ana Thu 11-Dec-14 22:33:09

Handynan, I don't know how anyone can walk in ballet pumps, there's no support for the arches at all. Even young girls seem to be walking either pigeon-toed or splay-footed in them...confused

Handynan27 Thu 11-Dec-14 22:26:26

Great to hear that other gransnetters love their jeans too. I like to wear slim straight leg or boot cut ones with long jumpers or dress them up with a smart top. Leggings/jeggings look great on the right legs but sadly not on my skinny ones envy. Nor can I wear ballet pumps as I keep walking out of them so it's boots or trainers for me!

wilygran Thu 11-Dec-14 22:09:52

Like leggings and tunics, but for an edgy look you can't beat jeans and a black leather jacket at any age.

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 21:41:31

Yes. I did stop at one point as I was wondering if I was too old for them. But my daughters said they suited me and why had I stopped? So I went back to them.

vegasmags Thu 11-Dec-14 21:19:53

I'm another jeans fan. No other trousers are as hardwearing or as versatile for everyday use. I wear thermal leggings underneath as the temperature drops. I don't really think too much about how I look round the house and nipping to the supermarket.

Lyndylou Thu 11-Dec-14 21:19:11

Every day, even for work now that I don't have to worry about meeting clients or running meetings any more. Don't think I have ever seen my partner in anything else in the 10 years I have known him. Rocha John Rocha from Debenhams usually for me, Blue Harbour from M & S for him.

I was only thinking today, that I will probably need to buy some posher trousers soon as I have lost over a stone in weight this year and my present work contract covering someone's maternity leave, comes to an end in January, so I had better spruce up to look for more work.

NfkDumpling Thu 11-Dec-14 21:01:19

Always. M&S with a bit of stretch. Straight or boot cut for variety. Occasionally I make an effort and wear trousers instead if I'm going out.

Marelli Thu 11-Dec-14 20:52:00

I wear jeans most days. I like the skinny ones so that they fit into boots and I wear long jumpers or tunic tops with them. If I haven't got my jeans on, it's my leggings - with the same type of top. I don't think it matters one bit about how old you are - wear exactly what you want, and what you feel most comfortable in! tchsmile (That's all part of being more 'mature' - pleasing yourself and not others)! tchwink!
