Do you agree ?

I think ties are on the way out. I note that it is quite common for men to wear suits with open necked shirts. The PM of Greece wears open necked shirts to obviously quite important meetings.but why would anyone wear ties in Greece in the summer? I went to a wedding where the groom had a suit and no tie none batted an eyelid.

I think DBH looks lovely in shorts, as does DS. I think it's more about finding a style of shorts that look good on them - we wouldn't wear just any old shape of skirt, would we? They do have very nice legs though, the pair of them.

It's only over the last couple of years that I have managed to get them both into ordinary t-shirts, rather than polo shirts. They are both naturally formal dressers. They like to look smart, I can't imagine many 20 year olds are delighted to receive ties for Christmas! DBH is often the only man wearing a tie at dinner parties.

Now that Mr Roses is retired finally, he doesn't wear any of his hundreds of ties anymore( apart from the usual weddings etc.) and I have noticed a big difference in stains on his shirts as a result! his ties obviously took a lot of foody flak, so perhaps do serve a good purpose.

That is definitely the upside. I feel like grabbing his tie and wiping his mouth with it sometimes.

After years of working in offices in the 1960s I think it's great seeing people going off to work casually dressed.

I like to see the young chaps in shorts carrying their messenger bags! and girls in trousers and shorts. Trousers for women were a definite no, no in the 60s and for a couple of decades after that. When I was pregnant in 1970 and still working, I had to wear dresses to work, tights etc., and it was soo uncomfortable.

When my OH retired he took all his ties except a couple in case needed to a charity shop. It was very liberating.

I would love my Dentist to wear a tee shirt saying Super Dentist and my doctor in one saying Super Doctor, it would relieve some of the tension. How about one for Solicitors saying "Trust me I'm a Solicitor" or one for Estate Agents saying ..... no I can't think of anything, they leave me speechless

One of my sons works in the office of a "creative" industry.
Goes to work in jeans and T shirt like 95% of his work colleagues.

Apparently in the creative sector, it is easier to be creative without a suit than with a suit

@soontobe - Maybe it is indicative that non-creative, bean-counting nuisances are referred to in the plural as 'The Suits' in most companies.

DS1, who works at head office of a prestitious retailer, found that many of his colleagues wore designer jeans to work, so has bought himself a pair. To be honest, I can't see much difference between the posh jeans and everyday M&S ones. I suppose it's the label that matters. For high level meetings, of course, he wears a suit, though not always a tie. Other son's job does involve wearing a suit.

I see there was some discussion of the sizing of shirts by the collar size further back in the thread. What a nightmare! If I bought a shirt with a comfortable collar size, say 19.5 inches, the sleeves would flap emptily at the end of my fingers... Try and find a shirt with 19.5 inch collar and 34 inch sleeves and I might just try a tie on... for a few minutes! (I do have a number of Italian silk jobs hidden away, for some reason...)

I agree with Teetime .i think most men look better when tidied up. We were at a funeral recently and I surprised myself thinking how sexy DH was in his smart suit and tie. It's the main thing I've regretted since he retired thinking how good he looked when he left in the morning and came home .now the cords and the chinos meh. And as for shorts.....

I don't think there's a man alive who doesn't look better, and extremely sexy, in a good dinner suit and bow tie.

... but NOT a made-up bow, like a bingo caller... harrumph...

This was a letter in the DM. Of course I don't agree with it. If i did I would be really worried.
