this is so amazing, just had to share:

The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room …. just wait.”
“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life.”
She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing.”
And with a smile, she said: “Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less

Such a lovely message. I would like to think that I could get to that age and be so positive. I'm going to start practising now!

Is this something you witnessed Granjura, or lifted from the Internet?Just asking, because there is a lot of this kind of thing out there, usually made up.

Mmmm. I do wonder where all the saintly old ladies and angelic children are found who feature in so many of the things that are shared round the internet.

Gillybob's gran would have had a field day if she had been introduced to one (so would mine. In fact, I'd love to be a fly on the wall at a conversation between the two of them))

gillybob Sat 10-Oct-15 12:47:08

You're right there Elegran my grandma definitely told it like it was.

Something that I loved and loathed at the same time and probably in equal measures. If she genuinely liked something she was quick and generous with praise but if she didn't......... crikey.

My gran and I visited an old neighbour of hers in a "old people home" (her words) not long before she died. The lady who escorted us to her friends room asked my grandma "what do you think of this place? Its nice isn't it?" to which my grandma replied... "bloody awful". shock

how can one ever discuss anything in this manner? I just do not know- I suppose there is no answer.

so what comes up is bile? So sad bordering on the tragic.

Yes, I just picked this up from a friend's FB page- and yes, this lovely old lady's story may be all made up- but as Gilly says, wonderful all the same, and an inspiration. As J52 says, a good time to practice is now. And switching off GN would be the best start.

Hold on to the good things and walk away. See you in MH on 27th those who still want to come- we could all practise together then x

granjura Sat 10-Oct-15 12:54:19

and before I go, I feel truly blessed to live in a country, where- should it ever become 'bloody awful' then I can press the opting out button. GN first, though ;)

My gran's opinion of "charity" was worth hearing - she had been at the receiving end of some of it. On a chilly day she would say "It's as cold as charity - and that's bloody freezing!!"

The lady in the OP comes over as comfortably off, fit and with steady hands and in possession of all her faculties (93 and able to be impeccably dressed, made up and lucid by eight in the morning), and her bladder can stand hours of waiting for inconsiderate care home staff to notice that she is there.

I'd say a real woman would have given them a spot of acid instead of all that unlikely syrup. It would have ensured she wasn't kept waiting as long again.

I loved it

merlotgran Sat 10-Oct-15 13:23:56

There is a lot of this stuff out there though. When Mum was needing a huge amount of my time and patience because her dementia was worsening and I was trying to cope with getting her out of a terrible care home and into a good nursing home my sis-in-law sent me some schmaltzy thing about a crabby old woman begging to be remembered as the vital young woman she once was. I think they were just about to leave for Portugal at the time! angry

I suppose these things can be heartwarming but I'm afraid I'm in the jingl camp.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Oct-15 13:42:22

"Free your mind from worries"

Yeah. Just like that. hmm

These things must make many less fortunate individuals feel guilty, when there is nothing for them to feel guilty about. Life can't be lived in la-la land.

janerowena Sat 10-Oct-15 21:35:47

It would be lovely if real life could be like that - it's very Pollyanna, isn't it? One of my grandmothers gave me all the Pollyanna stories when I was little, and was very upset when I hated them. I did meet a very elderly lady who seemed so positive that my first thought was, 'whatever it is that she's on, I want some', but I know that no matter how hard I try (not that I ever would) I would never ever be a sweet old lady full of sunshine and positive thinking.

rosesarered Sat 10-Oct-15 21:47:59

The Crabbit Old Woman thing was going around donkeys years ago, and I think this one probably originates ( as in totally made up) in the U.S. It certainly sounds like it.You Either love that kind of stuff or you don't.
