Designer handbags vs high street

One of my DILs always uses a designer handbag (I think she has about 3). She does buy them in the sales and can afford them so I don't begrudge or judge her or anything BUT, can they possibly be worth it? There are such lovely handbags on the high street, but she says it's as much about the name as the quality (which apparently is much better). What do others think? Have you ever owned a designer bag? Would you - if money wasn't an issue of course?

Seacliff I would have have snapped that Viyella bag up if it was anything like the eBay one. I just bought a similar one in Monsoon which was £29 but definitely not leather. I like Clarks (shoe shop) bags they are very smart and very reasonable, especially in the December sales. I have a nice little leather bag from Morrocco but it's too small for anything more than a phone and small purse.

I've never had a bag from anywhere near a designer, I'd be too worried about losing it. The prices are eye watering tchshock

Just daft imo

I do like a leather handbag but favour TK Maxx won't pay more

Don't tempt me MOnica! I like the Blackberry colour, would go well with denim, although I also ♥ the bright red! Unfortunately there is plenty of life left in my healthy back bag. tchhmm

shysal So far the annual cost of my carpet bag handbag has been £6 a year and if I use it as long as I hope, taking into account the repair cost, it will be £4.00 a year. That is a bargain by any stretch of the imagination!

Radley??!! - never 'eard of it!

MOnica* the carpet bags look wonderful. I would love a small rucksack, but can I justify the expense? Probably not. Maybe it would be an idea for my 70th next year.

My Italian SiL has a different bag for every outfit. She favours Prada, Balenciaga and Chanel. I usually get a castoff when I go to visit. I visit often....

I've got a lot of too many several handbags, various colours and sizes tchblush, my squirrel tendencies again.
Now I'm no longer in a high flyer job they're gradually being given away.

I have a little craft business making bags from fabric. I like Making them from Linton Tweed which is the fabric Chanel used to make her iconic jackets. So I sell my bags, which are 'designer' as they are designed by me or by the pattern designer whos patterns I sometimes use, for between £15 and £35, and you never see another one like it!!

KatyK Thu 03-Dec-15 17:32:25

I've never had or wanted a designer anything!

J52 Thu 03-Dec-15 17:28:49

I love leather handbags in all colours and sizes!

Mostly bought because I liked the design. I would worry if I had a really expensive designer brand, in case I ruined it or it got stolen!

I do have a couple of Radley, Tula and Furla bags, other than that any attractive bag will do!

My every day work bag is a Kipling. I don't really ove the look of tem, but they are so light and strong, with really useful pockets.

Jayh Thu 03-Dec-15 17:08:21

I like Radley bags as they have such handy little pockets on the outside for tickets, passports etc. I have three which I received as presents and they will last me for years. The cross body one is my holiday bag.

I saw a Viyella leather bag in charity shop today for £8.99 (see below). It was nice tan leather, a tiny bit scuffed near opening catch, but like new inside. Wasn't sure I loved it so lft it there. uusllay I only find real junk at charity shops.

I used to love Emmy( ? Spelling) but I haven't seen them for years.
Then I had Tula, now it's Radley as they have them 1/2 price on my cruises

Alima, I'm with you on the Kipling bags: light, practical, fabulous range of colours and styles. The gorilla key rings are given to the grandchildren for their school bags.

M0nica Thu 03-Dec-15 16:38:31

Oh, and someone was admiring it only this morning.

M0nica Thu 03-Dec-15 16:38:01

Ten years ago, or so,I bought a carpet bag from The Carpet Bag Company. It is a soft persian red and made from - carpet. It cost about £60. It goes with everything or nothing, depending on your view.

Last year I returned it to the manufacturer for a new zip and I hope it will last another 10 years. Since I bought it all those years ago, it has been the only winter handbag I possess. I do admit to a small leather pochette bag for special occasions.

tanith Thu 03-Dec-15 15:50:09

I don't do designer I have several cheap and cheerful bags and couple of leather ones but they aren't expensive ones just practical for flying with lots of pockets one grey and one tan. I wouldn't spend that sort of money on a bag ever..

Alima Thu 03-Dec-15 15:38:59

.....and you get a free gorilla with every bag.

Greyduster Thu 03-Dec-15 15:29:48

I don't do designer anything but I do have a Radley handbag which only comes out on the odd occasion. DD bought it for me some years ago, and I have looked after it. I had it with me last time we visited our son and d-i-l (I usually have my bog standard shoulder bag) and she said "Gosh, you've got a Radley bag! How lovely. Have you just bought it?" I told her no, and that she was the only person who had ever recognised it as a Radley, in which case I would leave it to her in my will!smile. I personally would struggle to recognise anything as being designer (unless it was a Loop Cross S1 fly rod!). I do recognise craftsmanship, but do the two always go hand in hand?

Alima Thu 03-Dec-15 15:24:55

Not keen on leather bags as they are relatively heavy. I wear a shoulder bag and too much weight makes my shoulder very achey. I like Kipling, light, colourful and loads of different styles.

JamJar1 Thu 03-Dec-15 15:16:23

I had a few Radleys, know they are not anywhere the price of a Mulberry or Chanel. But the bags I use all the time are my Cath Kidston's oil cloth over the body bags, especially the floral ones. Know CK is not to everyone's taste. grin

Galen Thu 03-Dec-15 15:13:29

Very small voice:-
I have a Radley ( 1/2 price on board in a sale)
And a Mulberry that I use when I have a lot to carry.
The Radley I use every day
