I quite ruthlessly culled my smart business work suits when I retired , ditching the skirts and trousers (I kept one favourite suit I always got compliments on and have a very elegant black Jigsaw one bequeathed by DD1, who bought it at huge discount when she worked briefly for John Lewis . I wear it for funerals for which my b and w dress -see below-is not suitable ) I think I have worn each of about 6 winter-one is over 30 years old- jackets once in 5 years . But they are fairly classic , expensive and in colours which suit me .
I then realised I had very few smart casual clothes for my 'new' life .I did go a bit mad that first summer, and subsequently . I now have 32 summer tops plus 3 plain T shirts . I can't say I wore every one last summer but most got an airing and I do take a fair few if we go on holiday somewhere warm . I wear them with cut-offs , as I have good legs ,(3 pairs for day, one white broderie anglais for evening ) long cotton trousers (3 pairs) or jeans ( 3 pairs for every day .One v expensive Not your Daughters for best) . I love pretty summer tops . They do all co- ordinate with one of my 3 pairs of cut offs though. I have two lightweight dresses, two long dresses for summer and a smart sundress . And a couple of nice cardigans. White summer weight jacket . 18 year old denim bomber jacket.
Similarly I bought some new sweaters (not 32 !) which have got a bit tatty so have been relegated to house/garden . I have bought 4 new ones and two big thick Sainsbury ones for 'round the house' this winter. Worn with jeans .
One jersey wrap dress, one smart and very expensive black and white 'best ' dress ( 8 years old) which has attended 3 graduations, a wedding and several funerals, and goes out to concerts, theatre etc thus reducing the 'cost per wear'
Three cocktail dresses and 7 'evening' tops /sweaters (I've no idea why. We don't 'cruise' or anything !) Silk padded jacket bought in Hong Kong 1985 .One pair mid weight black trousers .
Two tops for wearing at choir concerts
One 'best' overcoat I've had for 7 years and makes me feel fabulous . One down coat (I catch a lot of buses), one down jacket, two down gilets , one mac ,one walking anorak . Walking trousers and wicking T shirts .
That's basically my wardrobe
I did recently give to charity anything that was too small (except a tuxedo suit which I cannot get into but am determined to again) and most of my high heeled shoes (knee problems) . My weight can vary by as much as 10lbs and most of my clothes will still fit me .
Does that lot seem excessive to anyone?
I know I spent about £800 on clothes each year for 3 years (including the down coats and gilets and some £200 Goretex boots which will probably see me out, a pair of Ecco sandals and some Skecher trainers)but cut that to about £400 last year and am on track for a lot less this year .
Bu I've always loved clothes....
