What is your oldest clothing item

ps forgot to say that I'll soon be 80 so the jacket is 20 years old.
Last time I was in Newcstle, about 4 years ago, I noticed that a lady standing next to me, looking in a shop window, was wearing the identical jacket! I got chatting to her about it.

Have a dress from when I was sixteen that my boyfriend now husband liked. Can get into it still but fortunately it is a long maxi black velvet that fits at the bust and just flows from there! Not usually sentimental! Don't wear it though as am now 60 and it is a bit girly!

I have a red wool coat bought in the late 80s which I wear very infrequently. Two old things I wear most are fleece tops worn instead of a dressing gown. One was bought from Littlewoods (the shop) and they shut down yonks ago. The other was bought in June 2002 in San Fransisco for $5. Really cannot part with either of them.

A sweater bought in 1963, much darned, but worn occasionally. My graduation ball dress from 1964, I can - just - get in it, but don't. A Damart vest bought around 1985. It is thin, 3/4 sleeved, wide necked and fits to the waist and can be worn under almost anything and not be noticed. They only made them for a year or two so I nurture the one I still have.

I also have some vintage clothes dating to the 1960s/70s bought recently and definitely worn.

Oh dear, nothing on my wardrobe that is more than about 5 years old. My weight has fluctuated so much over the years that I have frequently passed bags of too-big or too-small clothes to charity shops and re-stocked! Yes, I know, if I held on to them the day would come when they'd fit again. I do that for a while then get fed up with having them taking up space so out they go.

Monica I'm always banging on about Uniqlo, but their heattech range includes sleeveless, short-sleeved and longsleeved vest type garments that are just as warm as Damart used to be.
They're quite slinky too so don't catch against whatever you're wearing on the top. I wear my black longsleeved one as a top in its own right sometimes, brightened up with a scarf or a chunky necklace.

Yesterday I was wearing my 20-year old thick-knit grey polo neck sweater, nothing like it for keeping warm.

My wedding outfit. A skirt and top from Jaeger. My husband helped me choose it where we were living in Tunbridge Wells. Can't fit into them any more. The shoes are quite hideous. I lend them to schools when they are doing the 70s in history.
Also a very long scarf knitted by my grandmother in the early 60s.

To still wear?? An 80s red jacket with black piping. Still very smart. I was persuaded to splash out by a friend in Libertys. Wow just shows it pays to buy smart....more of an M and S girl generally.

I've still got a denim jacket that I bought in Dorothy Perkins about 20 years ago. I wear it occasionally, but was surprised when i went into DP a few months ago and saw the denim jackets they had in stock. Not very different to my original one.

I also have a denim jacket I bought in Asda 20yrs ago (snap SusanCh) I wear it occasionally over a long Summer dress.. it still looks fine.

my daughter aged 36 can still get into the jodphurs I bought her when she was nine and does. I have a tweed jacket from when I was 17 - (64 now) is a bit tight but wearable. My children have taken to disposing of old outdoor puffas and stuff I would otherwise still wear. I have a silk nightie of my mother's which I don't wear only because it is very fragile - dates back to the 1930s. As a family we are not great shoppers and things tend to last. Probably because there is little opportunity for smart stuff and working out of doors a lot depends on warmth and practicality rather than glamour!!!!!

I have a blue fox coat that belonged to my grandmother. It is cleaned every year and comes out whenever it gets cold - at a guess it must be around 60 years old, older than me anyway.

A jacket which I bought for my daughter 27 years ago (from BHS) and I now wear in the garden. I've worn it much longer than she ever did !!
I used to wear a suit which had belonged to my granny but unfortunately it is one of those things which seems to have shrunk while hanging in the wardrobe. Judging by the style I think it would have been new in the 1940's.

A 1960s Burberry trench coat. Given to me by an Aunt. It was bought for her by her husband, in the 60s. She hardly wore it because she was not very tall and it was long on her.

I have worn it a lot.

I have a black 1920's flapper dress that was a family heirloom. It wouldn't go any where near me now, but I used to wear it to dances in the 60's. I used to think it was very daring because the shoulders were just black net and you could see my bra straps through it

Oldest item I still wear is plain black blazer. It only comes out about 2-3 times a year. It must be 20+ years old. I do wear it undone these days
There is also a bridesmaids dress DD wore when she was 3. She will be 29 this year.

A red half zip sweatshirt which DD bought in 1986 and then decided she didn't like so was going to throw out. I 'rescued' it and have worn it ever since. It isn't any special make, but it has never lost it's colour (unlike some of the Benetton ones i had) and washes beautifully. It shows no sign of wearing out and i love it. DD said just before Christmas "I can't believe you're still wearing that old thing!"

A Damart scarf, bought as a present for me circa 1972.

I have a black velvet top made by my gran when she was in her 20s. She gave me it in the late 70s. I used to wear it a lot but don't go that many places where it would be appropriate now. The lining is fraying a bit but it still fits and looks OK. Gran died in 1989 aged 90.

A lime-green poloneck ribbed jumper. Very trendy in approx 1968, when I got it. Now quite tatty but with only the neck showing, under another jumper, still okay for casual wear and it keeps me cosy.

I have a long black tailored coat in a very light material. I bought it in a sale around 1990 ( reduced from £100 to £50), and I still wear it occasionally. It's also been borrowed by friends for " dress up" nights out.

Until recently it was a reversible Puffa jacket with zip out sleeves, bought December 1993 for my 40th birthday.

I haven't got any old clothes. Need the wardrobe space for new. Oxfam does well out of me.
