While i have a vague idea of what suits me I know I could be making more of myself and wondered if anyone had found these consultations useful. Or not?! Be worth it if it'll prevent me from buying duds I don't wear - or do wear but look terrible in!

I had mine done about 30 years ago when DH & I decamped to a heath farm for a few days while our kitchen floor was being laid. It was one of the ways they kept the inmates entertained in the evenings, you had to pay extra of course. This was by Colour Me Beautiful.
I was told that I was a Spring & used their colour swatch for years, although being of a rather "oh, that'll do disposition" I wasn't too careful about the shades, just sticking more or less to the colours.
I have recently had my colours re-done by House of Colour & am a Paint Box Spring, which is about as bright as you can get I think. So basically, I think the colours stay with you all your life & at 68 I still have very little grey hair but think that skin tone & eye colour may have faded a bit, it was all much as expected.
Being "in my prime" in the 60s/early 70s I was very much wedded still, to emphasis on the eyes not lips & must say that reversing that has made a big difference.
If you want to dip your toe in the water I very much recommend the blog post on the Kettlewell site.

I can no longer wear the same shades of colour I did when young so it seems a good idea, but roughly what would a consultation would cost?

I haven't had my colours done but I have had a personal shopper, twice. The first time it was a young girl of about 20 years old. The second time, I went with a friend and there were two consultants. Both times they brought out clothes I was sure were totally wrong for me but I was surprised to find many of their choices were really good once I tried them on. They really know their job and I'd certainly go again.

Npw56 are you independent or do you work for an organisation? Any advice on how to choose a consultant?

Having worn mainly Autumn colours I had a Colour Me Beautiful consultation and turned out I am cool and soft.
It helps to coordinate my wardrobe, though some colours in my palette are more 'me' than others. They do a great range of make up too, their eye shadows are especially good quality.

I had my couplers done in 2001 and again in 2014. I had all the wrong colours in my wardrobe of course, but felt really liberated to start buying colours I have always liked ( bright colours, pinks, yellows) but didn't have the cinfidence to wear. I have really enjoyed slowly updating my wardrobe so it's been great fun. Go for it, it's very liberating and great fun

A post cod is so much more interesting somehow Mrshat

mrshat Fri 05-Feb-16 16:06:28

or even your postcode!

I've had mine done twice. Once more recently as I felt perhaps I had aged a bit!!!!!!!! Anyway, I had them done by Colour Me Beautiful and many years ago I was a Deep Autumn, they changed the categories by the time I returned as a more mature lady grin and I am now 'Soft and Warm'!!! Possibly a 'Warm Autumn' in the earlier descriptions. However, skin tone and hair colour change and the consultant was excellent. I did wear strong colours which I loved, but now the shades of the same colours are softer and warmer and are much more suited to the older 'me'. I would highly recommend anyone to have it done. It is an enjoyable (and possibly) an enlightening experience. Unfortunately, I have no idea of the cost nowadays. If you log onto the the colourmebeautiful.com website and put in your postcod, a list of consultants near you will appear!! Good luck and enjoy it all including the new you!! wink

My voucher from DH is from Colour Me Beautiful who are recommended by Kettlewell and seem to be the most well known company. I think it costs about £100 for and hour and a half consultation.

Anyone know where I could get this done and how much please?

Misha14 Fri 05-Feb-16 14:08:12

I had it done years ago and it's made all the difference. Also helps when shopping because you don't even consider the colours that don't flatter. You can do it for yourself, though it helps to have a friend whose opinion you trust. Just hold colours up to your face, in a good light, and see which drain your skin and which don't.

AshleyM Fri 05-Feb-16 13:22:03

I've had it done and it's really useful for getting the right shade of colours that suit you, for instance I can do a postbox red, burgundy or bluey red, but not a pink or orange based red. It's also good to bear in mind that as you age your colouring changes so an updated session would help.

A decent consultant would also be able to discuss make up colours, hair colour if you wanted to change yours.

It's not a disaster if you have clothes that find out aren't a good colour for you, have a swapping party with friends!!

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 05-Feb-16 12:24:20

I agree Cosafina. I'd like to have mine done again, but don't know anyone else who has had their colours done to get a recommendation. It's not cheap and I can't afford to pay more than once if I didn't have confidence in the what the consultant says.

Perhaps GN HQ would letus have a thread where we can ask for recommendations from other GNs, not just for this, but for anything?

maggiemay01 Fri 05-Feb-16 12:12:38

never had my colours done....... bit of a coward....

Cosafina Fri 05-Feb-16 11:44:53

But where do you go to get them done? When I googled just now, do I just want my colours or do I want style and make up as well? (I don't really wear make up, but I'd love to know how to bring out my eyes a bit more)

How do you know if the consultant is any good?

Tessa101 Fri 05-Feb-16 11:18:38

My daughter had hers done, and it was very good as what she was recommended was spot on and suited her immensely. When we go clothes shopping she always takes the chart with her that they give you so she can see what advice they gave. It even works for jewellery costume or other. She thought it was worth every penny.

My mum had her colours done away back in the early 80s when colour me beautiful first came out and there was only 4 options (spring, summer, autumn and winter). I then had mine done and was told I was a summer and that those where the colours you had all your life.

I then was at a girls day out thing and they lassie asked if anyone had had their colours done so said I was a summer...

"Oh no dear, you're definitely NOT a summer"

Had them reanalysed and I'm actually a clear spring and suddenly they said "actually, your colours CAN change"

So I take it with a pince of salt to be honest. I still wear colours I like that aren't on the clear spring booklet - maybe not near my face.

It's a fun experience but don't let it dictate what you always wear.

oznan Fri 05-Feb-16 10:18:38

I had this done by an Amway rep at a party at my home some years ago.The lady used a lamp and a white cloth round the neck, then various coloured scarves to show the effect on the skin-it was quite an eye-opener as to just how much difference each colour made. You were graded as Spring,Summer,Autumn and Winter and could then buy a swatch of colours for your season.Mine was summer and there were colours I already wore and some that I wouldn't have thought of trying. Also discovered that purple,my favourite colour, did not suit me.
I found it very useful and would definitely have it done again now that I am older.

Cagsy Fri 05-Feb-16 09:48:28

Hope you enjoy it kitty, I'd have a problem as I don't do make up shock

Npw56 Fri 05-Feb-16 09:46:04

I'm a colour and image consultant.
Having your colours done is about brining out the best you. "Being the best version of you"
I have 3 daughters and 11 GC
So for me I think knowing what's going to help you look at you very best is something to have at hand for when needed. When babysitting for 4+ GC at a time.... it's simply about being comfortable. However when going out to lunch, seeing friends or business I know I can make the most of what I have.
As we age our colours of our skin, hair and eyes soften, so colours we've worn for years may not be right now.
Also you can wear any colour it about finding the correct tone of colour that's right for you.
I hope this helps.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 04-Feb-16 14:53:22

LOL! You know why he chose this for you. wink Can't wait to hear how you get on.

kittylester Thu 04-Feb-16 13:43:00

Thank you Wilma, it was a present from my DH for our last anniversary. I assume he thinks I've looked like a bag lady for long enough!

rosesarered Thu 04-Feb-16 13:38:08

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this kitty ?
