Alexa Chung will be collaborating with M&S on a new line:
Delving into the high street icon’s vast design archives, Alexa has cherry-picked her favourite styles from the past to redevelop with team M&S - and we all know how good that eye for vintage is, don’t we?

I remember wearing a shirt - and a dress - with a pie-crust frill many years ago. They do say if you remember it the first time round, don't wear it again when it comes back into fashion.
So will M&S be appealing to the more mature customer or hoping to entice the younger customer into their stores?
Perhaps we will have to wait and see.

Does anyone else like wearing vintage clothes?

^The 31 piece line, called Archive by Alexa, is due to drop into stores in April and promises heritage silhouettes in modern fabrics and colour palettes.
What is a heritage silhouette? Speaking for myself, my silhouette is not quite the same as it was many years ago. hmm

I gather the midi skirt as worn by Alexa Chung sold well but I think she is all wrong for Marks, she is deemed quite edgy as far as fashion is concerned and is as far removed from mainstream, middle of the road M&S as she could possibly be. I don't know what the rationale behind hiring her is, same goes for Rosie H-W, neither represent the demographic of the average Marks shopper and I don't think AC will attract a younger clientele. My main gripe about AC is she is just too thin and she has horrible legs I also think the same about Angelina Jolie and Amal Clooney, both have lovely faces and hair but very thin limbs and again horrible knees. I really think promoting "stick thin" as something to aspire to ought to be knocked on the head, it's common knowledge that some young girls covet the emaciated look and don't eat properly to achieve it.

I'll reserve judgement on the new collection but my gut feeling is that it will misfire. I think Marks just need to tap into the mindset of their core customer and listen to what they want. Another criticism, I think a lot of people feel they offer too much choice and a lot of it is tacky, try rummaging through some of their sale rails, am I alone in thinking "good God whoever designed that and thought it would sell!"

I stopped buying clothes from Marks circa 1995.

None of the things I did buy survived my periodic culls (although I do have some stuff from the 80s) so I doubt if I'll be buying them second time around!

Having wandered through M&S an hour ago, there was absolutely nothing that caught my eye, let alone made me think of trying it on. I don't think I'll bother looking there again, this seems to be happening every time I'm in town.

obieone Fri 05-Feb-16 17:46:28

I cant see her staying around. It would ruin her street cred.

obieone Fri 05-Feb-16 17:46:57

Headline stuff for both of them.

OlderNoWiser Fri 05-Feb-16 18:30:02

Only thing I ever buy in M&S is food - their cheese coleslaw is to die for grin

M0nica Fri 05-Feb-16 18:34:56

I have gone through almost all my life walking into M&S and thinking all their clothes are designed for somebody 20 years older than me.

Stuart Rose upped the style but downed the quality so I still didn't shop there. Now we get an annual campaign all about the celebrities that will be promoting the brand this year. Its all about the celebrities, the clothes do not really come into it. I am not remotely interested in celebrities, whether Twiggy or Alexia Chung, nor am I likely to buy anything just because they are promoting it, if anything I avoid any product anywhere promoted by a celebrity

Whenever (if ever) I go into M&S I still see the same incoherent mish mash of clothes, mostly dull and dowdy, with the (very) occasional useful item.

Charleygirl Fri 05-Feb-16 19:22:37

I have even stopped buying knickers there- I can buy them cheaper and better quality at Sainsburys.

I also only buy food there now.

Deedaa Fri 05-Feb-16 20:52:21

I've bought some knickers from Sainsbury's but they aren't as nice as my M&S ones. Ibought a bra there and found I could only just do up a size 42 while I usually buy size 38 from M&S.

Can't imagine what good Alexa is going to do. She is so scrawny and there's something weird about her eyes. The big problem is too many ranges - Per Una, Limited, Autograph, Classic, Indigo, M&S Collection, and they all seem interchangeable when you start looking at the clothes. Colours and fabrics are still horrible but no one seems bothered.

Help please , I am going to be more or less housebound for a while (hip and knee problems ) so un able to go traipsing around shops for any length of time. I am looking for some online sites where I can buy some reasonably priced clothing .Ideas and reccomendations anyone ?

Jalima Sun 07-Feb-16 12:11:48

I don't think Alexa Chung has realised that M&S do food hmm

Because of the different ranges, if you are looking for an item it could be anywhere in the store then trying to match it with another item means a trawl around the store again.

There are a few I think riclorian, not sure what size you are but there is Marisota and 50+ (I have never bought anything from either so not sure of style or quality). I do send for things from Debenhams and their service is very good.
There is another reasonably priced high street store, not sure if they do online and I can't remember the name of it, some of it used to be a bit old-fashioned but it has improved. I bought some nice jeans from there and a much admired long black cardigan. When I remember I'll post it.

Cher53 Sun 07-Feb-16 12:57:33

I will stick to Matalan, Bon Marche, Asda and Sainsbury's for my clothing, they have reasonable prices and similar quality, compared to M&S at about three times the price. M&S sizing is also all over the place.

M&S have decided to go to the young and thin market, but what they do not realise, is that young people see M&S as an older person's store, and it is too expensive for them. Ask your children or grandchildren where they buy clothes, if they are under about 35 it won't be M&S.

M&S lost the plot years ago. Their food is excellent and I still occasionally buy underwear and tights.

WilmaKnickersfit Sun 07-Feb-16 13:24:28

I can only imagine how much M&S paid to get Alexa Chung. It's quite a coup. It will drive the kind of people who like her style to buy her pieces for M&S, or those who want the cachet of owning one of her pieces, but very few customers will be able to carry off her look by wearing them. She's not only very thin, she has an unusual look that would make most of us look frumpy.

Her boyfriend is Alexander Skarsgard, who imho is the most gorgeous man on the planet and for that reason alone, I hate her! grin

Teetime Sun 07-Feb-16 16:20:10

Who is Alexander Chung?

Teetime Sun 07-Feb-16 16:20:32

Alexa!

TerriBull Sun 07-Feb-16 16:39:21

Alexa Chung, best described as a stick thin model with knobbly knees, media personality, fashion icon, edgy it girl with all the right connections. Had a Mulberry handbag named after her "The Alexa" Ex girlfriend of an Artic Monkey, Alex Turner, current boyfriend as Wilma pointed out Alexander Skarsgard, presume he is son of Stellan.

TerriBull Sun 07-Feb-16 16:47:43

Personally I think her style is as far removed from the average Marks customer as Camilla Batmangelich's is, but time will tell if her range will be a success.

rosesarered Sun 07-Feb-16 19:53:00

Wilma what in earth does the gorgeous Skarsgard see in her?Possibly good for them both to be seen out and about together for a while.
M&S is losing the plot ( apart from food.)

Badenkate Sun 07-Feb-16 20:00:49

Marks and Spencer have totally lost knowledge of who their core customer is. * Cher53* is completely right - no young person is going to buy clothes from M&S, and yet their clothes seem to be aimed at either this age group or for some imaginary older group who like drab frumpy clothes. I want stylish, comfortable clothes, with tops that don't just cover my navel leaving an (embarrassing) gap.

WilmaKnickersfit Sun 07-Feb-16 20:19:44

roses I have no idea what he sees in her, but I don't think they're a convenience couple tbh. They've kept out of the spotlight for a good while now.

Teribull yes, he's one of Stellan's son.

I can see her range selling, but it won't make more people shop more in M&S.

Enjoy!
