How often should you wash your hair?

I used to wash (and condition) mine every 2nd day but I've read somewhere that this is still too frequent and strips oils etc. My hair is quite thin. I'm currently weaning myself to 3/4 days (without any dry shampoo which makes my head itch). How often do you wash yours?

Sometimes every day sometimes every other day, about 4yrs ago I tried leaving mine longer and longer to see if it made any difference to how my how felt/looked apart from on the 3rd day I hated the feel of it and it was lank and itchy so I went back to my usual practice of every other day mostly.

I was ready recently that it is a bit of a fallacy to leave you hair to cleanse itself. The article said that the oil and yeast make for an itchy scalp and attracts bacteria.

Tuesdays and Fridays.

Once a week. But I spend a lot of time styling it nicely so that it lasts. I think your hair gets used to being washed too much and you can train it to last longer between washes. Or maybe it's training yourself to not mind so much!
To be fair, on the last day before hair washing it doesn't usually look fabulous and if I've got a special occasion I'll cheat and do it a day or two early.

I wash mine every day . If I do leave it for a second day it looks nice but half way through the morning it begins to feel sticky and awful .

I have to wash and condition my hair every morning. If I don't, it gets really greasy and makes me feel uncomfortable. I have to condition it otherwise the hairbrush won't go through!

Every day or I look like a wild woman!

Whitewave - on the other hand I was told that the more often you wash it, the more it stimulates oil production.
I wash mine once a week, and in the winter my hair seems drier than in the summer, when I'm out more. Perhaps due to heated rooms in winter.

On average every 4 days but more frequently if I think that it needs it. I never condition my hair and I doubt if anybody would notice.

I wash and blow dry every day otherwise I feel scummy all day, fortunately it is short so dosent take long, use a silver toned shampoo and conditioner for blonde/grey hair, and have a dry trim to keep style every 3 weeks as it grows out widthways instead of down..

henetha Thu 03-Mar-16 15:09:09

Every third day. If I do it every day it seems lifeless.

Imperfect27 Thu 03-Mar-16 15:14:45

Every third day for me too - more often and it starts to get very dry. Maybe length makes a difference - mine is short and very easy to manage.

About twice a week. Used to be every day pre menopause, because it got so greasy. One benefit of getting older wink

loopylou Thu 03-Mar-16 15:44:37

Every day and I never use conditioner.

Luckygirl Thu 03-Mar-16 17:09:25

Twice a week - it is long and a palaver to dry, so more often would take up too much time.

Desdemona Thu 03-Mar-16 17:37:19

Every other day. I washed it every day for years but doesnt seem as greasy as it used to be. I only use conditioner occasionally.

hildajenniJ Thu 03-Mar-16 17:44:20

I have short hair, and need to wash it every day, as it sticks up in all directions after a night's sleep. Putting any sort of product through it just makes it look flat or too spiky.

ninathenana Thu 03-Mar-16 17:45:30

Mine used to be greasy but thankfully that's changed as I've got older now it's just thin and fine.
I wash it 2-3 times a week depending on what I'm doing.

FarNorth Thu 03-Mar-16 17:49:33

I haven't used shampoo for over a year. I wash my hair in plain warm water 2 or 3 times a week.

maryEJB Thu 03-Mar-16 17:55:48

Twice a week - usually Mondays and Fridays when I go swimming. I agree with those who say too frequent washing makes the hair produce more grease. I find if I wash more often for some reason the next time it goes greasy earlier so I try not to do it too often. I used to only do it once a week and it never went greasy.
Mind you I think Ive got a dry scalp like my mother who used to go to rhe hairdressers fortnightly snd never washed in between. In addition she rubbed some sort of oil in too when it was too dry.
My husband and my daughter both have daily showers and wash hair daily. (I hasten to add I have a daily bath instead!) I need to blow dry my hair or it looks awful and I couldn't be bothered to do it every day.

Grannatu Thu 03-Mar-16 18:08:57

I wash and condition my hair every day in my morning shower. If I miss a day it becomes very flat and greasy and I don't feel clean!

Chicklette Thu 03-Mar-16 18:27:20

I wash and condition my thick curly hair every day. If I ever miss a day my head feels dirty and as I need to tame my hair with extra products it feels disgusting. And without wishing to offend anybody, when we were young my Mum went to the hairdresser once a week and never washed her hair in between and I hated the stale smell of her unwashed hair.

Ana Thu 03-Mar-16 18:37:53

I'm not convinced that 'washing' hair in warm water alone would get it clean, especially if it's inclined to greasiness. It's just rinsing it really, isn't it?
