Long hair on older women

When should you get your hair cut! At seventy, I have good hair, lots of grey coming in, but I have a few highlights put in. Some of my friends say I would look younger if I had it chopped off, trouble is once it's one would I regret it, enjoy the fact that one bit of me is still ok.the rest is slowly giving up.

I got my bun things from ebay today so I'm going to wrestle with them tomorrow. I used to do a thick plait but it made my arms ache.

My Mum says wigs were hot and sweaty back then. She tells a funny story about her wig slowly creeping up her scalp once when she was on the bus! grin She looked lovely with her different hairpieces though and I think it was the hairdresser who put them in for her. I'm pretty sure she could leave her wig at the hairdressers for a blowdry too.

They were, back in the mid to late 60's and early 70's, pity that they don't make a comback.I remember at a dance in the late 60's saying to a friend ( about another girl we spotted with lovely coloured hair ' great wig' ( and meaning it.)

Your hair is lovely wot and definitely not in the thin and scraggly category! shock I don't think anybody who posted a photo fits in that category. On the other hand, I don't think Mary Beard's hair does her any favours, but she clearly doesn't care and that's her choice.

I love messing about with my hair and would love to have the nerve to wear a wig. I bought a nice brown chin length bob from eBay a few years ago and although it looks nice, I haven't got the courage to wear it out the house. Same thing with the fab clip in fringe I bought from eBay as well. I wish wigs were a popular accessory like a bag or shoes. sad

He hasn't got ANY hair left now, poor soul. We never mention it though. I haven't seen him 'in the flesh' for 40 years but we're email and photo friends.

Oh well, he got variety for his money then grin I remember those lovely wig boutiques, I had two really nice hairpieces to clip on.

And they kept your head warm in the winter!

Ha ha ha! grin

We used to wear wigs in the very early 70s and I loved them. My fiance never knew who he was taking out each night! Only used to have cheap nylon ones from Brixton .

There are some lovely syrups about Wot smile I don't need one, and they are very expensive, but I wouldn't mind a change. You stay happy with your long hair,
We should all do whatever we want.... It's ours isn't it?

wot Sat 09-Apr-16 20:34:18

If my hair became really thin, I'd seriously consider wearing a syrup (of figs....wigs!)

wot Sat 09-Apr-16 20:32:23

Yes, this thread did make me feel low. My hair went from nearly black to white which I discovered when I was not in a health position to dye it. So I've grown it long. Most posters on here thought long hair on a 65 year old was not good. I've got over it now!. I can always have it cut when I get REALLY old!!

MargaretX Sat 09-Apr-16 20:20:19

This is a most depressing post! All these mature women with thick long hair not even grey sometimes. My lovely auburn hair has gone and been replaced with thin wispy hair, .blondish. If i had long thick hair i would keep it!
You are so lucky.

Thank you wot, I like to think I'm open minded and love a good debate! I love Coolgran65's blow drying to a 'stage of straggly' too lol smile

Coolgran65 Fri 08-Apr-16 22:37:50

It takes me a couple of minutes to get my short-ish freshly washed and blown dry hair to the stage of straggly that I want. A lot of finger twisting going on while using the hairdryer.

Only my opinion but I think that Clare Baldwin's hair looks old fashioned.

wot Fri 08-Apr-16 21:27:03

I think your comments are very fair, carol58.

carol58 Fri 08-Apr-16 19:55:13

All down to personal choice in the end. As long as we're not feeling pressured to look a certain way then it's all good. I don't think my longer hair could ever be described as straggly, still quite thick thank goodness. I wash it every day in the shower, comb through and leave it to dry naturally into waves. It's not what you would called 'styled' in the modern sense, as that's not my style but it's clean and shiny. Does anything else matter?

wot Fri 08-Apr-16 18:43:24

So short hair enables you to look in the mirror and think "oh, I look attractive!"

boheminan Fri 08-Apr-16 18:39:04

Agree with you Wot - mine's long and the colours of the rainbow, but straggley/scraggly it ain't. It's like calling all short hair mowed.

wot Fri 08-Apr-16 18:05:23

Why do associate long with straggley? It ain't necessarily so.

Leticia Fri 08-Apr-16 16:50:31

Attractive to ourselves. I don't feel good if my hair is all straggly.

carol58 Fri 08-Apr-16 16:32:50

Just reading through the comments there's an awful lot about being 'attractive'. Attractive to whom? and why is that seen to be so important? Surely, at any age, our personality is the most important thing about us? It shouldn't matter to anyone how long our hair is, what colour, style or even how many times a day we (look in the mirror to) comb it! If we're happy in ourselves then that's all that matters imho. It does worry me that society is obsessed with looks.....

nigglynellie Fri 08-Apr-16 13:41:41

Vanessa Redgraves hair looks so scraggly and unkempt. It also makes her look very old!! I know it's her business, but with all that money, surely she could at least avoid her hair looking so untidy and unattractive!

Newquay Wed 06-Apr-16 22:56:54

Funnily enough there's a couple of ladies I see who, recently, have let their hair grow longer. They've now both got shoulder length straggly hair. They both look so untidy and unkemptsad
One has slides in and it does look ridiculous, like I had when I was about 9!

Leticia Wed 06-Apr-16 22:03:14

I think Judi Dench's hair looks great.
I admire Mary Beard for not bothering what people think, but I long to get scissors to her hair!
