what to wear at 60 plus?

I am about to turn 60. It feels like a landmark. My 50s sort of came and went without me really noticing but I do feel different now. Not old I hasten to add. Maybe more grown up. Anyway I think perhaps it's time to take stock and revise my style a bit. I've pretty much carried on wearing the things I have always done but suddenly feel a bit mutton dressed as lamb. I'd like to update my look to reflect my age but without going old or frumpy. Where do I start? (Did I mention I hate shopping?!)

J I would look like the fairy on the Christmas tree.

I thought my son was having a growth spurt. At 35. grin

Granny2 daughter measured me yesterday. I've shrunk three and a half inches!

Previous post was in answer to jings
However, I am sure you would look lovely in it smile

Granny2 if they are from M&S they have changed the leg length - medium is now too long for me, some older pairs I have are still OK so I don't think it's because I am shrinking.

She wouldn't if she is anything like either of my DD
bossy honest!

Years ago we were on a monorail in the States and friend and I were convulsed with giggles because a very rounded older woman strap-hanging opposite us was wearing a very bright floral full-skirted dress similar to that but without the net petticoats, white socks and trainers. To complete the look she had nicely permed hair.
We tried not to let her see our increasingly hysterical laughter.

I still like nice trousers and tops but am having trouble getting trousers to fit as they all seem to be too long. One of my daughters says its because I am shrinking if only I could shrink all round.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 09-May-16 15:26:51

I'd wear it. If DD would let me.

Maggiemaybe Kalimantan
You make me sound like a Greek olive grin
(I do know it is in Borneo)

I'm not sure that DGD1 would wear that frilly dress (she's 7), although DGD2 may covet it! DGD1 might like the jacket though.

Yes, she did have a gastric band, I think. Wasn't there some controversy about her having lost weight, promoted a diet and then found to have lost it by means of surgery?
Or was that someone else?

whitewave Mon 09-May-16 10:25:19

She is much thinner than she used to be. Did she have a gastric band fitted?

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-May-16 10:15:38

This one.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 09-May-16 10:08:39

Can't be that one. No jacket.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 09-May-16 10:06:43

Is it this one? It's so pretty. Would be lovely for a summer ball.

gettingonabit Mon 09-May-16 10:02:29

Omg! That dress is awful and she's been photoshopped to buggery. Her head doesn't seem to match her bodyhmm.

I like the jacket though (I can't seem to wear bikers and I'm not quite sure why...).

trisher Mon 09-May-16 08:36:27

Fern looks good, but you know she couldn't move about and still look good. Is it just me or does it look as if someone has just stuffed that net petticoat up the front of her dress-bit like a cushion?

Pittcity Mon 09-May-16 08:19:20

I browsed the magazine rack in Wilkos on Saturday to see what she was wearing and saw another cover with the celebrity (can't remember who) wearing the exact same jacket with jeans. Do they only have one jacket?

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-May-16 08:05:16

Jalima, not Jamila. And definitely not what my spellchecker wants you to be, which is Kalimantan confused grin

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-May-16 08:00:15

I've just had a peek at Fern in her frilly floral frock, Jamila. She looks stunning in the photo, but I can only imagine how I'd look in that outfit without the help of the stylist and a bit of photoshopping. As if I'd just escaped from somewhere, I suspect grin

Deedaa that's what I do too smile

But what looks good from the front doesn't always look good from the back and I've often had to 'harden my heart' too, when something that initially got a 'Yes!' is seen from the back in those horribly truthful useful mirrors hmm

Jalima Sun 08-May-16 21:22:33

My DGD look sweet for special occasions in those dresses or skirts with those frilly underskirts showing at the bottom.
Not a good look for a woman of 58 surely?

Jalima Sun 08-May-16 21:19:07

Me too, ww

I want longer jackets, but they all end mid-tummy these days.

winifred01 Sun 08-May-16 21:18:46

I agree about cover of Good Housekeeping, Fern Britton looks as though she has dressed from the dressing up box my children used to play with.

whitewave Sun 08-May-16 21:18:16

Nothing I try on looks any good at the ultimate best it isn't bad

Deedaa Sun 08-May-16 21:15:58

One fail safe rule I have for buying clothes is to look carefully at the ones I'm trying on, then to look at myself in the clothes I came in wearing, and then decide if the new ones look better. An awful lot of the time they don't and I harden my heart and leave them.
