Help!
I'm sitting on the bed with an obscenely huge heap of probably more than 35 skirts, and there's goodness knows how many teeshirts, sweaters and shirts.
I'm now retired, certainly I don't need 90% 80% of it but how do I decide what to give to the charity shop?
Do people wear skirts at home? What do I really need? I'd love to dress more smartly but instead slob around in ancient jeans and fleeces, I never wear makeup, should I make more effort?
And that's just my winter clothes.......?

I'm a terrible hoarder of clothes so I put my winter or summer wardrobe in storage boxes under the bed out of season. Then, when I get them out it's like seeing everything with fresh eyes - sometimes it's 'great to see' things, sometimes it's 'what was I thinking' .. and that's the stuff I send to the charity shop. Sadly, there's enough 'what was I thinking' to clear a chunk each time ..

I have been retired a while now but I find that I suddenly wear things I haven't worn for years and I find it looks good maybe with something newer. My husband thinks it is new. So be careful what you throw out.

Give away to a charity shop or sell on e bay or gumtree things in good condition that don't fit. Really tatty things put in the recycling bins.

If you want to wear a skirt at home then do so. If your going out make a bit of effort, change into something smarter and maybe use basic makeup. Value yourself and the clothes you have. Maybe you need to go out more and join some clubs, organisations or enrol for a class and you will find the need to dress smarter.

(As I write this I am still in my dressing gown, my friend calls it a pyjama day. Tomorrow I am going on a coach trip so will be up early and dressed suitable as the coach goes at 8am.)

Something I was told once about getting rid of clothes: don't keep the low self-esteem ones. You know which ones they are in your wardrobe! By all means keep one or two outfits for gardening/diy/walking the dog/etc but don't keep lots of things like that. Nor is there any point keeping things that used to fit but don't now. That's another low self-esteem policy.

You still here Loopy? grin

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 16:31:46

Not helped by going up a size either.......
Willpower sadly lacking here ?

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 16:30:45

And mine!
How many pairs of trousers/jeans do I really need 14pairs and counting it's seriously embarrassing now.....

MiniMouse Wed 18-May-16 16:25:15

Nandalot Oh how I long for that swish! wink Right, that's my incentive to crack on .....

dustyangel Wed 18-May-16 16:03:11

I started this morning (before I read this!) to clear out my clothes by at least putting the winter stuff away. I've got as far as washing 3 sweaters that I'd worn once and put back blush and finding three more. I'm using delaying tactics because I can't face going through all the pairs of trousers to see what fits/doesn't out of date.
How many pairs of black trousers do I really need? grin

Nandalot Wed 18-May-16 15:55:15

I have at last had a good clear out. This was easier this year because I have been dieting since September and have gone down three dress sizes. But oh the relief to have got rid of things that I was sick of but were still 'serviceable' and the things I had bought on impulse and regretted and that looked at me reproachfully every time I opened the wardrobe door. The pleasure of looking at the few things in the cupboard which now have room to breathe and of hearing the satisfying swish as they have space to move along the rails.

Just better make sure I watch those cakes from now on.

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 15:09:40

??? Yippee!!
I'm highly relieved that I am not the only one!
FarNorth perhaps I need to start with sorting out 'smarter' looking outfits to wear at home then ditch the comfortable old stuff?

Kittye Wed 18-May-16 14:50:47

A couple of weeks ago I bought back a cardigan I'd donated a week or so before. It looked much nicer hanging in the charity shop than in my wardrobe grin Earlier this year I donated a pair of evening sandals that I'd had some years but hardly worn, cos I fancied a change. When I came to replace them I couldn't find a pair I liked as much sad . I'll have to wait til whoever bought them gets fed up with them and donates them.

I changed over the Winter clothes and put Summer clothes in my main wardrobe just over a week ago as the weather was warmer.Put about ten items in a bag for the charity shop.I go on 'if I haven't worn it in two years, get rid of it' principle which seems to work. Hmmmn, now I fancy a few new things, must have a shopping trip soon.I am now raiding the Winter wardrobe for cardigans as it's damp and cooler.

FarNorth Wed 18-May-16 14:12:09

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with these illogical ways of behaving. I wear slob gear at home as I don't want to dirty my "good" stuff. Then I forget to change and find myself slobbing around the shops.
Any time I do wear nicer things at home, it cheers me up. Need to do it more often.

MiniMouse Wed 18-May-16 13:38:38

There's no hope is there? blush

Oh well, time for brew and roastchicken, then, suitably refreshed I'll head back upstairs . . . . .

Or perhaps not.

Liz46 Wed 18-May-16 13:33:09

I'm terrible. As soon as I get rid of something, I need it.

I volunteer in a very good charity shop and I have to try really hard to not buy things. Last week it was another bag. I really don't need it but it is lovely!

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 13:22:44

? MiniMouse!
I really need to just dump almost everything, don't I? I haven't begun on the drawers yet ??.....dd says I have over 50 tee shirts alone ............

MiniMouse Wed 18-May-16 13:06:23

loopylou I've just come on GN to take a break from . . . . . trying to clear out my drawers and wardrobe!

I've actually managed to put quite a few things in the charity bag, but I still have to resist the temptation to 'rescue' a few items before they depart for the charity shop blush

So far, I've only done the drawers and I think I'm too scared to tackle the wardrobe again. Yes, I've attempted this several times, but it always ends in failure because I can never decide what to get rid of hmm I really try to be sensible - and ruthless - but never seem to manage to part with enough to make me feel I've achieved anything. sad

Must try harder
Must try harder
Must try harder

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 13:03:23

Thank goodness it's not just me!
I need to just get on and do it, don't I? The more I procrastinate the more I talk myself into shoving it all back in to the wardrobe!

Jalima Wed 18-May-16 12:52:04

skinnies? sleeveless vests?
No, oh no, I must be gettingonabitmorethanyou grin
Although I do have some slim(mish) fit dark jeans and new tops.

I have just put something back in the wardrobe which was on the pile for the charity shop; an expensive top and skirt I had 20 years ago and have worn about 4 or 5 times. Help please!

gettingonabit Wed 18-May-16 12:46:39

A capsule wardrobe? If you want to look smarter, change your old jeans for some jeggings or skinnies. Get some long vests, in a variety of colours. One pair (say) brogues and one pair boots. A couple of cardies.

Et voila! You have outfits you can wear every day, suitable for both slobbing and being outside. Dirt cheap too. Dress up or down with bling or smarter jackets.

Apparently we only ever wear 20% of our stuff, so you're not the only onesmile.

loopylou Wed 18-May-16 11:59:49

Kindred spirit jingl! I daren't go out and buy anything else!!
If I only put back things I've worn in the past 12 months then it would be very little because I tend to drag out the same few items.... The problem is that as soon as I chuck something out I will worry in case I need it sometime (isn't that what hoarders do?? Oh dear....!)
So that means I only wear the same things over and over again.

Get a grip Loopylou, for goodness sake!
I need someone to come and sort me out, any offers?!

mumofmadboys Wed 18-May-16 11:56:54

If you find it hard to make lots of decisions decide to get rid of one item a day!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 18-May-16 11:56:18

slobbing! Not sobbing! grin (I hope things aren't that bad)

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 18-May-16 11:53:35

I've got the same problem. Get everything out of my wardrobe and then put most of it back, just in case. Daft really.

Perhaps get rid of anything ancient and buy new stuff so your "sobbing around" is more picturesque?! grin

Don't bother about makeup. Perhaps get some of that new tinted foundation they are advertising on tv? I'm getting some of that when my existing day cream runs out. I might get one of those pencil slim lipsticks from Benefit that my DD uses. Just a light, warm pink.

Antjexix Wed 18-May-16 11:51:59

Charity shop is a good idea,or maybe sell stuff on ebay?!
