A rant against fleeces!

I think cropped trousers are far more unflattering, especially the wide legged ones which make everyone look short and overweight. Nearly as unflattering are leggings with a short top on older women.

Love my fleece what else is there? cardi or twinset and pearls ? I live by the North Sea and have no central heating a fleece is perfect Wouldn't go to the theatre in one but great for every day winter wear

I saw the article about the damage to marine life caused by fleeces. They are made using recycled plastic bottles etc and the washing process removes some of the plastic which then enters the water system. Same goes for microbeads in cleansers, toothpastes etc.
I agree that fleeces are warm and practical but I'm now thinking perhaps we shouldn't use them, or just don't wash them!

We are ramblers, so fleeces are a must. Depends how much outdoor stuff you do, surely. And as others have said, indoors too, to save on heating bills. Obviously not to somewhere smart, like the theatre, or a wedding.....

They are good for taking your dog(s) out, but I agree really unflattering. However, I can think if something far worse, really unflattering and who the hell invented them . The denim skirt. Short and long, the latter being the ultimate in ugly. Do women really look in the mirror and think "how lovely" , more likely saying " that will have to do "

Fleeced are great as warmers. I had a school one once. A TA came up and said that mine didn't suit her any more than hers did her!!!!!

Nuff said, not keen to wear it after that.

I own x2 fleese jackets and a couple of those sleeveless jackets. I find them cosy and warm. Both my fleese so are in my favourite colour of light blue.
Just the thing to wear around the house and walking the dog along the coast.

Useful in the garden, on my daughter's farm and walking Hadrian's Wall last year - in midsummer! Left undone worn with jeans, jumper, scarf tied around neck, great for winter shopping!

St Fleece in the Wolds is the Patron saint of caravanners in the low season... oh and our summers!

I was just thinking yesterday that I want to buy a new fleece. You have just reminded me. I hate clothing rules. I'm going to get one anyway.

Fashionista rubbish! People who write these things never step outside the streets of London, unless they're going to Barbados on hols . I wouldn't wear mine in town or on a night out but they're great for outdoor activities. Mind you, I've recently become a fan of Weird Fish macaroni hoodies too but that's another discussion lol!

Fleeces are so cosy and easy to wear. I just wish someone would make a more fashionable one so that everyone would wear them and not look like an old woman off to the shops (I'm an old woman by the way).

Agree with carol58 - who ever claimed they are meant to be fashionable? oldgoose - I think there's a company that makes "smarter" stuff using fleece called "Buffers Fleeces" (or similar).

Fleeces are for practical purposes, like eveyone has said. These guides about what not to wear are all very well, but are we seriously expected to look smart/glamorous every day when cleaning the floor or the toilet or looking after small children?

As far as Joanna Lumley and co are concerned, who cares what she wears around the house, and anyway she has probably had Botox and other "interventions" to look the way she does. I admire celebrities like Judi Dench who clearly hasn't had such interventions.

I won't be giving up my fleece anytime soon.

Oh dear. I've just read Elegran's link to the Mark Browne piece. I love my fleeces; so warm and practical in cold weather (we have horses so I have to be outside quite a lot in winter). But perhaps a rethink is needed.

Perhaps the recently discovered plastic eating bacteria may be an answer, though I wonder what the by product of their ingestion might be; for all we know that may prove to be detrimental to the environment, too.

I agree they are not elegant but they are for casual wear and serve a purpose . If you are a walker, have dogs or are on a boat in the North Atlantic as I am at the moment they are indispensable.

Haha Nelliemoser - don't even get me started on those! Who needs to wear a photo on their back? Make a nice dog blanket though....

I bought a couple of fleeces from Lands End ( the company, not the place in Cornwall) ages ago and they are still going strong. I like them because the body part has a lining and also all the pockets have proper zips even three inside ones so keys, phone, money etc are secure. Open pockets are useless because things fall out. Oh yes, and they cost a mere £18 each in the sale.

I have a lovely light weight one which i wear for walking/hiking . Very comfy and not unflattering in my opinion. Would not wear it (of course) to anywhere smart like the theatre.

Oh goodie, something else to rebel against. I shall wear mine all the more now - just because I can!

I was jolly grateful for my fleece this morning when I landed in chilly Scotland after a journey from temperatures in the 90's!

I'm allergic to wool so fleece does the job or cotton jumpers, if I can find nice ones.

That's that then - all in favour say "aye".
Looks like fleeces have won the day and the fashion police suffered a total and utter defeat!
