A rant against fleeces!

I have always thought the fleece to be the most unflattering and boring garment known to woman (and man). I was therefore delighted to see on Gransnet, in the' What not to wear over 50' section, that fleeces were mentioned as a definite 'no'. What's more, in my paper today, I read that they are a threat to marine life because every time one is washed 2,000 polyester fibres are released into the environment. I rest my case!

Many fleeces are made from recycled plastic bottles, so are good for the environment in that way. They don't need washing very often and I'm afraid comfort and warmth rate more highly than environmental concerns. I spend half my life recycling, reusing and generally being thrifty, so think I'm allowed a few fleeces. Also, I have yet to wear one out - they last for ever.

I just don't find that my full length wool and cashmere blend coat goes with my mucky wellies.

nelliemoser if I ever get one of those cutsy fleeces I won't need the fashion police on my case....my daughters will soon put me straight!!

I have a fond memory of my first encounter with fleece. My now deceased brother was wearing one of those pullover fleeces with the half zipper in the front. I hugged him and I though this is like hugging a bear! grin

Oh Nelliemoser - super cute or what ?
(What, I suspect)
My only objection to most fleeces is that they can come in such naff colours - pastel mauve, beige, pale turquoise or boring blue. If somebody really pepped the colours up and looked at the styling so that one looked less like a sack of tatties, what's the problem? Soft, warm, lightweight, washable and with a guaranteed supply of dog poo bags in every pocket smile

I have to admit to wearing them around the house in winter and on the allotment, as I feel the cold dreadfully, but now think I should be wearing wool as I too have heard they're a threat to marine life. My daughter tells me there was a documentary regarding this on Aussie TV recently and I have also read about it. Being synthetic man-made fibres they take forever to break down.

Today I went out in my beige three quarter length Mac with my fleece underneath. I felt smart and warm. What more could I ask!

Lilyflower Wed 06-Jul-16 10:45:43

Fleeces? No. Just no.

Jane10 Wed 06-Jul-16 18:06:20

Better not try one lily - you might be converted to the cosy charm of the fleece!

Nelliemoser Wed 06-Jul-16 18:37:46

DaphneBroon Many fleeces come in various shade of beige. in
In my book there is yellow beige, blue beige. pink beige, green beige. Probably a lilac beige as well.

I think daphnebroon has been looking in the wrong shops if all she has seen are those wabbit pastels.

DaphneBroon Wed 06-Jul-16 20:01:52

nelliemoser grin
But you may well be right Elegran, point me towards some better ones, please, I'm all for warmth and comfort, but I also know that the peelly wally pastels do me no favours at all.

mrsmopp Wed 06-Jul-16 20:15:19

Do they come in fawn beige nelloemiser? Or maybe magnolia to match the wallpaper..

Elegran Wed 06-Jul-16 21:26:20

DaphneBroon I don't know what colour you like, or which shops you have looked in, but sports shops selling fleeces for people who wear them to do strenuous activity seem to have stronger colours than those selling "fashion", particularly cheap fashion. They fit better too. Decathlon is one chain with various price levels (also sell online).

I have a cherry red fleece (Maine) which I wear every Monday morning when out with my walking group. When the weather is dry and cold it keeps me cosy and when the weather is wet I wear it under a waterproof jacket. I make absolutely no attempt at being fashionable when walking through a country park.

I wouldn't be without it!

DaphneBroon Wed 06-Jul-16 23:43:17

Elegran I don't think I would be allowed in a shop which specialised in stuff for sporty types, they would suss me as a fraud right away. grin

grannyqueenie Thu 07-Jul-16 00:38:57

elegran wabbit... haven't heard that word for years, made me smile after a hectic day it's just how I feel!!!

grannyqueenie Thu 07-Jul-16 00:52:22

Help ma boab, Daphnebroon.....I've just looked further back and spotted "peelly wally"....!!!!

DaphneBroon Thu 07-Jul-16 07:55:42

Jings, grannyqueenie grin !!

Elegran Thu 07-Jul-16 09:20:00

Daphnebroon My raincoat and my roll-upable emergency mac (both dazzling peacock blue/green) came from Decathlon, so did the backpack I use to carry home my stuff from Tesco (both hands free for buspass etc) and the captive-tennis-ball-fixed-to-a-post game I bought for my grandchildren to biff around. No-one asked me how I got on in the half-marathon or which geriatric hockey club I played for. You'd be safe enough.

Jane10 Thu 07-Jul-16 12:02:15

Mine all came from Tresspass except the leopard print one , a joke gift from DD, which came from M&S. I wear it specially to embarrass her!

Legs55 Sat 09-Jul-16 14:33:32

fleeces are made from re-cycled plastic bottles - good usee I would say. I have fleeces on my I love my fleece jackets & gillets - great for cooler or even cold weather. Helps save on the fuel bills, I do have several cardigans but they not as comfortable as a fleece

millymouge Mon 11-Jul-16 07:47:57

Sorry but from the practical side you can't beat a fleece on a bitter winters morning when you are out early walking the dogs. Hood up, thick gloves and a good supply of poo bags in the pocket, plus a few treats and you are away. And when you come home glowing a hot coffe with a drop of something warming in its wink

Jane10 Mon 11-Jul-16 08:53:37

No apology necessarily Milly. We're all in favour of the fleece here!

Nannylovesshopping Mon 11-Jul-16 08:57:32
