Why do they do it ?

I love David Jason but hate that when he is interviewed he hides his East End accent.

Because.... everyone wants better but no one should be ashamed of where they come from.

I either read or heard Jenni Murray once say she regarded that as a "uniform "'and it means she doesn't have to think about what to wear each day -just presumably the choice of scarf. I think she has very much made it her "style" and being on the large side, she has gone for her signature look.

I love Jenni Murray's scarves and have tried to emulate the look but it hasn't worked for me. Instead of effortlessly elegant, I merely resemble a parcel that's coming unwrapped.

Why don't Jenni Murrays scarves just fall off? Are they secured in some way?

Scribbles I too love Jenni Murrays scarves, I also look like an "unwrapping"parcel. My friend looks elegant wearing scarves in different ways. I look as if I'm choking.lol. Some women have the knack,some don't. I'm one of the latter I'm afraid☹️

It must be ME who doesn't like Jenny's scarves much. Each to our own. At least Nigella dresses up when on telly.

Kittye: look up WIKI HOW TO DO ANYTHING and insert "how to wear scarves". Lots of ideas plus step by step illustrations! Have fun. I too love scarves but am hopeless with them.

J Murray isn’t really the right shape for such huge scarves, you need to be tall and slim IMHO to wear them successfully.Still, they are her choice and maybe a bit of a comfort blanket for her, who knows?
Does D Jason ‘hide’ his accent though? Maybe it’s because he is an actor and has been away from the East End for most of his life?
I always wonder why naturally quite tall women on tv still wear five inch heels?

When I first started work in a bank 57 years ago I decided I would smarten up my image by wearing a scarf. The first day I wore it the Chief Accountant asked me if I had a sore throat. Needless to say after that I never really felt I could carry off the look.

In my office they called it the 'Violet Bucket' look.

I'm at a loss to work out how Rachel Johnson can look as if she gets out of bed looking so effortlessly elegant and yet her brother - the terminally clumsy Boris - looks just the complete opposite!

I have a lot of pretty scarves but have not yet managed to look elegant, I usually end up looking as if I have dressed in a hurry in the dark. It is a shame as I have reached the age where a nicely placed silk scarf would hide the wrinkly neck.

Maybe women (+men) can wear whatever they like??

As I now have a large scar on my neck I have embraced the scarf.
And yes by changing scarves a I can instantly change my look.
I have a large collection and even when wearing my 'daily uniform' of jeans and a dark T shirt I feel smarter with as scarf.

It's not really a moan, more of a comment, but I've just watched 'Rip Off Britain ' with Angela, Gloria and Julia, and I am always fascinated by their jewellery. The chunky necklaces, big broaches, and dangly earrings always draw me away from what they are talking about. I'm always conscious of drawing attention to my elderly neck, but they don't seem to mind, in fact the jewellery makes me look in that area. So maybe I should just do as they do and wear all those pretty necklaces I've collected over the years.

I wonder if the three ladies you mention Diggingdoris hope that the fancy jewellery takes your eyes away from their necks.
I expect that some ladies wear all-black as they think it makes them look slimmer but how unimaginative. I used to work with a young girl who had glorious auburn hair, she wore a black sweater, black suede skirt, black velvet hairband and black leather boots - every day. I suppose it makes getting ready for work easier.

Diggingdoris, I was going to make the same comment as you! I used to love chunky jewellery but now find it a chore to find what goes with what.

Back in 1969 I was an office junior. A 21 year old woman wore a smart trouser suit to the office one day. The boss told her to go home and get changed. She went home without a murmer. How times have changed. Those old men preferred their staff in mini skirts.

I’m with Ayjay, people should wear whatever they like. It’s no ones business but their own. Why so critical?

I once heard Jennie Murray speak at the Edinburgh Literary Festival, a few years ago now and she explained her large scarves. She said she stated wearing them after her mastectomy as she felt they helped to balance her. Often we adopt scarves or large jewellery for a reason.
