Meghan's white coat

I watched it live and I honestly thought she was dressing for later and had popped out in her dressing gown. My friend was with me and explained there was a fashionable coat style like that. But I don't like it. I didn't even think it looked good on her. I think she'd look better in something more fitted.

I think it looks lovely. I had one very like it in the late 60s when I was young and beautiful but in black not white. I would try on white clothes which looked good with my long chestnut hair but not buy them. No way I could have afforded the cleaning bills.

Well, she could be A Good Thing in encouraging young women to wear warmer clothes when they go out in winter instead of the flimsy tops and short skirts they seem to like wearing at the moment.

She has been a campaigner for women's causes for many years so yes, I think she will be a good ambassador worldwide.

Golly ..who would think a wrap coat ..that’s what it’s called ..wrap coat ...very on trend right now..very seventies / eighties ...could generate such angst in some people. She wears it well because she can and a lot of us can’t.. but I did wear one back in the day when I could !

Baggs, I see what you mean about it looking a bit like a dressing gown.

As a style I think a wrap coat might be tricky to wear but probably comfortable and warm so I'd put comfort over style.

Marydoll, I loved your account of a friend who's evening coat was a dressing gown . My Mum had a black velvet dressing gown that I always thought was an evening coat so your story brought back a lovely memory, thanks.

As for Winter White, I'm with all those who'd love to wear that but I'd probably only make it to the car before I messed it up :-)

Leave the girl alone! She's clearly making Prince Harry very happy and that is surely all that matters.

I enjoy following fashion and I enjoy looking at what other people wear. I might not choose 99% of it for myself, but it does inform my own clothing choices. Plus I can admire how others look (or not, as the case may be).

It's the Golden Globes awards tomorrow night in the USA, so I will have a look at what is worn on the red carpet. The prediction is the good old little black dress is bang on trend.

I'm pretty sure that once Meghan is married, we'll see her supporting more British designers. That's what most of the Royals do. There's no doubt she will be leading fashion figure, as things we've seen her wear are selling out and high street versions will follow.

Meghan may well turn out to be a very Good Thing for many of us in Britain - not just for Harry. However, I personally think that white (winter or otherwise) is just not her best colour.

How superficial and anti-feminist a thought is that....! Sorry, Meghan.

But I do wish we could go back to pre Victorian wedding fashions where people who could afford it could wear whatever colour(s) they wanted. This is, admittedly, starting to happen - but oh so slowly!

Yes it does look like a dressing gown, I have a dressing gown just like it but I look like a sack of spuds in mine and she looks good.

This thread made me think about public figures and their role in promoting the fashion industry which does bring in a lot of money to the economy. A number of royal persons include HM herself promoted designers and fashion and therefore fully expected their clothes to be commented on/followed/emulated.

She looks good in the white coat though I would look like a sack of potatoes in it.

If an outfit looks good you can bet your bottom dollar that in the vast majority of cases it has not been just thrown together.

Yes, why shouldn't clothes and the fashions people wear be commented upon? It is NOT the same as making personal comments about a person, oddbird.

I reckon the only reason we don't talk more about men's clothes is because they tend to wear a uniform. If their attire varied a bit more it might be just as interesting and as commentable upon as women's clothes.

I would love to be able to wear clothes the way some people can. Those people who can throw an outfit together and look amazing. I think MM looks fabulous in that coat.

TheOddBird she is a public figure now and as such her dress sense will be watched and commented on, just like many other public figures.

You don't have to make apologies to me for your comments, and no disrespects to the lady but I am of the opinion Meghan Markle needs serious advice on wearing garments that compliment her slim figure which should not need the belt twisted and turned around like one was securing a sack of something.

That’s true Camelot so maybe she should wear a white coat as much as possible.
In my 20’s I had an off white coat with a fur collar (faux) and felt the bees knees in it.....then children came along!

The style is actually called a dressing gown coat. Seriously, that's what the style is called. Google it if you don't believe me. It's very on trend right now, although MM didn't start the fashion. Oh... And she's got more than one in that style,

That coat would be worn by someone who never travelled on public transport and hadn't (yet) had children.

Not a style I particularly like (for myself, not having a go at Meghan). However, she looks a lot warmer than the young girls I saw last night wearing very short skirts, no tights, canvas shoes and very strappy tops. They weren’t going out for the night, they were ganging round in a group!

MM looked lovely but the coat is a bit of a dressing gown to be sure.

She always looks lovely. I am fed up of people talking about her clothes. She is a very intelligent woman with plenty to say if people would give her the chance. I see her embracing many charities and working with Harry on his favourites. I am sure she will find a couple that she will give her time to as well. Forget the clothes...listen to her words.
