What's the best kind of bra to get if you're a bit bigger and wobblier in the bust department?

Day6 Fri 26-Oct-18 19:53:17

Just a tip - I have long ago given up on sexy bras and when I ent for the more matronly and supportive type (sadly they are bras for comfort) I wasn't sure where to start. M&S were ok, but when I travelled to visit my son I went shopping. The JD/HJ/TJ? Hughes store in his town had a whole section of what looked like very supportive bras, well made and cheaper than M&S and others.

I am sorry I cannot remember the name or makes but Triumph featured as well as others and they came in a whole range of sizes. I have a broad back but smallish bosums. Getting a 40 A or B cup is pretty impossible - they seem to offer C cups going through to DDs and Es....so small chest me is at a loss! However, that Hughes store - I really cannot remember the initials and cannot be bothered mid post to look it up - had a fantastic range! I bought three very comfy bras.

Oh and Lemon I totally agree - there is no such thing as a comfy bra. As soon as I get in I unhook, and have, now I'm retired, been known to go out braless of late! shock

They're not made wide enough at all. Good fit over the bust but a last hook fastening making the bust squash together instead of keeping them separated. I'm not big by any means but have a broad back.

I find bras uncomfortable whether fitted or not. I take them off every afternoon /evening. last night I was on a plane....took it off anyway as I couldnt bear it any longer. don’t think the man beside my dh noticed....I used the undo, slip off arms under top method, then whip it off and away with a flourish. Toned down the flourish last night though; as we were fairly squashed in cattle class Thompson’s. TUI. Think I got away with it. smile

Doreen is now available in lots of colours @aprilinparis

I've recently purchased purple, plum and sky blue - they also have bright pink if you fancy it!

Most of the women seem to be wearing the wrong bra size. Very few of us know the importance of wearing perfect bra size. Almost all of us don't know how to measure bra size and as a result they tend to wear wrong bra.
I have found an article which talks about all these things and also about different types of bra which are available in the market. I am sharing the article www.popxo.com/2015/02/find-the-perfect-bra-for-your-boobs/ , please have a look, if you really care about your breast.

Margrete, may I be cheeky too and ask your age?

aprilinparis Sun 04-Feb-18 17:51:30

Another vote for Doreen by Triumph but I wish they would make them in other colours. Just because my bust is big doesn't mean I want to wear white or black underwear.
I am still glad to get rid of it at night though.

Bravissimo for me. I was wearing a Doreen 34DD but was advised on 30J or 32 J at Bravissimo, depending on the style. Never looked back. They also do a good range of tops, dresses, nightwear and swimwear to suit the fuller-busted among us. Once you've found your size in the style you like it's easy enough to order online, but ALWAYS go to a shop first and make sure of the right size in that style - different brands can differ!

I have a problem with bras which hasn't been mentioned. I don't have very big boobs, but they have always been quite low slung and the nipples (not particuarly big) are right on the front. If I wear an ordinary bra they show, so I look for padded, non-wired ones. But they all have huge foam shaping these days and I can't find one like my very old M & S which just had a thin padding.

I went to Bravissimo, and a nice lady measured me by sight only. Adjusted the bra I was wearing so it fitted much better, and I bought a new tshirt smooth one that doesn't leave lumps and bumps and lines showing, and feels a lot more comfortable. I still don't think I'd be happy to wear it for 18 hours a day though, will still take it off after teatime when nobody i slikely to come to the door lol. And I found I'm a 32 FF which is gobsmacking really as I was wearing a 38!!

Luzdoh if your back pain is so severe as to require morphine then that is a definite indication for getting it done. Morphine is addictive and requires increased doses over time. A horrible way to live.

margrete Tue 30-Jan-18 15:57:40

Luzdoh no, not rude at all. It came to £5,600. Free consultation beforehand. I took it out of my investments and it was the best money I've ever spent. It was at our local Spire hospital - look up www.spirehealthcare.com/locations/

In some areas this is done on the NHS but not commonly nowadays. I don't know whether our local NHS would do it, I didn't even bother to ask, because I didn't want to be humiliated. We had our cataracts done on the NHS about 10 years ago but I don't think we'd get them done now under present cash-strapped NHS conditions. I had to argue even for that - I was doing GCSE Maths at the local community college and I couldn't see the board. I was asked 'And do you really need to do your GCSE Maths?' I responded 'Yes I do!'

By the way Spire do a 0% loan but that may depend on your age. It is really well worth it for the comfort, the absence of backache, the disappearance of yeast infections needing Canesten, a whole lot of things.

I like Bravissimo's service and their bras.

Tegan2 Tue 30-Jan-18 03:21:30

NotTooOld; that happened to me when I was measured and fitted; ended up buying two rather expensive bras that were so tight I ended up buying those elastic extensions for them. The woman in the shop was really hard sell.

Blodwen1910 Mon 29-Jan-18 23:10:52

Rigby and Peller assessed my size as 34H, their bra was OK but I alternate that with my "Doreen". My big problem (other than my big bust) is getting a bra with wider straps that take the weight but don't cut into my shoulders. None at Bravissimo nor John Lewis.

Coolgran65 Mon 29-Jan-18 22:37:01

Mawbroon just today I was looking at Triumph Doreen on Amazon and they had several of the long lines.

The standard Doreen bra style is £34 to buy locally and is £23 on Amazon with free delivery.

Shizam Mon 29-Jan-18 22:27:03

Rigby and Peller May have been recently shunted off queen’s list, but have always found their fitting service fantastic. They are expensive but mine last for years. Having said that, always happy to peel off. Feel the same about shoes. Hate wearing them.

MawBroon Mon 29-Jan-18 21:30:08

I still lament the “longline”bras of my teens. Easiest way ever to lose the muffin top (which is worse than ever)
Does anybody make them?

trooper7133 Mon 29-Jan-18 21:26:04

A second vote for Triumph

JaneD3 Mon 29-Jan-18 20:23:58

Fantasie. I found Doreen simply didn’t have enough support for the bigger girl!

Alexa Mon 29-Jan-18 19:49:29

My problem with bras is I have sloping shoulders, and I have to be careful to not buy these prettier looking bras with far apart straps, or else the straps slip off my shoulders. I get non wired complete control from M and S. Since osteoporosis spinal hump I need a larger size and now am older and need a smaller cup size.
When I broke my wrist I wore pull- on step -in sort of unwired sports bras with close- together straps. Something like Geni, 'Milana bra'.

Lupin Mon 29-Jan-18 19:32:35

The best ones I've found are Berlei and M&S underwired sports bras. I also like Chantelle (underwired) and Freya (underwired). Berlei and Freya are best for wobble control. With Freya - try a bigger size round the body. They are - or were - quite tight.
I've tried others and always come back to these.
Never tried Bravissimo - but I will now.

luzdoh Mon 29-Jan-18 18:51:51

Margrete - Is it rude to ask about the cost? I'd love to heave off this heavy weight of my boobs, especially now I have chronic back pain so intractable I'm on morphine. I can't imagine my GP saying the NHS would foot the bill at my age either, but I don't know if I could afford it, so would be so grateful for some idea of the cost. Oh! and GOOD FOR YOU! Just what I always wanted to do!
