We are going to a family wedding in April and I have been looking for an outfit. Normally I live in things to cover my flabby belly, I'm not one for really dressing up, but the bride is my only neice and goddaughter so want something special. I have tried a few outfits on but I feel as though belly is to prominent. I have been thinking about shapewear but don't know where to start. Any suggestions would be gratefully received as it's to late for a tummy tuck ha ha.

I bought mine from M & S for our eldest wedding in 2016. It's full shape wear that you wear as an under garment. I wear it as a pull on and there are no buttons and bottoms to mess with for toilet use. It cost me £30. That should work

Nanawind, if you decide to buy any shapewear, have a practice run at home, one thing I found useful was an all day panty liner, because they get quite sweaty.
What I also found useful was spare underwear, because after wearing them for 3 hours at a wedding, I couldn’t wait to take them off!
Hot, sweaty and uncomfortable, not only that but every time I touched somebody we both got a static shock, probably due in part to the carpeting in the venue, but, never again.
Apart from a close friend noticing that I had lost weight ,all eyes were on the bride and I just felt uncomfortable.

If only tummy a problem look up what foods to avoid that cause bloating, and cut them out for a week or so before the event. Shapewear very uncomfortable and I found it took so long to struggle she going to the loo that I had to make sure I never left it too late, !

Let’s hear it for Grannygravy13 and Day6!! I’ve tried various shapewear and just ended up in the loo taking it off (or I too might have ended up in an ambulance!). I just got hotter and hotter and more and more flustered - horrible. Buy something cool and floaty OP and just enjoy yourself!

The video supplied by OldMeg is a hoot. That's what most REAL women look like in shapewear.

Why not wear something by “Masai “. .? Lovely colours stylish and loose fitting!

ruthiek Tue 27-Feb-18 19:37:55

Just be careful with the all in ones when Youbneed the loo, I wore one and the more alchohol I drunk the more difficult it was to catch the flap when I bent !!! Not a pretty sight shock

I am hugely embarrassed just thinking about it...

MissAdventure Tue 27-Feb-18 16:43:58

The thing is, if you were taken poorly, somebody might need to loosen your clothing. Imagine them trying?

Nanawind Tue 27-Feb-18 16:40:30

Waking up in an ambulance has scared me off buying shape wear.

MissAdventure Tue 27-Feb-18 16:26:23

grin this thread has really made me laugh, with 'continual wedgies', and people (silverlining48) waking up in an ambulance. grin

My tummy has never been flat although TBH I suppose it's not too bad. I have some M&S firm knickers but for DD2's wedding I bought an M&S long line shaper. It was very high waisted, supposed to go up almost t my bra. The assistant said I could return it if it wasn't the right size. I've a few pounds still to lose on Frugal February but I'm not overweight but I had such a struggle getting into it because of my generous thighs that I could not possibly have returned it, the elastic was all out of shape. Anyway, I wore it to the wedding and it made a difference but the high waist didn't stay up, it sort of wrinkled downwards.

I have bought lots of shapewear on the past and its all in the drawer. I never wear it , too uncomfortable!

inishowen Tue 27-Feb-18 15:04:51

What about a skirt with a matching loose top over it. I've seen this sort of thing in Bon Marche and Edinburgh Woolen Mill. When you wear them they look like a dress and can be very pretty.

So fed up with us ladies of a certain age being made to feel we should look like magazine shoots. Our bodies are marvellous machines, have given us our children, and carried us on our journey through life.

Bravo GrannyGravy13!

I understand the need to look svelte and for the flabby bits and bulges to be under control, but imo shape-wear is the work of the Devil unless you are reasonably thin to start with. Ironic, huh?

I tried an all in one piece - almost like a swimming costume but stronger and all it did was ride up and push any spare flesh I had out of the top and bottom. It was extremely uncomfortable. It flattened my tummy somewhat but because I am not slim, the whole thing kept rucking up. It was so constrictive and I was uncomfortable all day and felt awful.

I'd suggest some decent control pants but I tried those too and they kept rolling over at the waist and were hellish to get on and off. In the loo I I was jumping up and down (like giving myself continual wedgies) to try and get the horrid things back up.

I have learnt my lesson. I'd go for a loose fitting jacket and blouse with either a skirt of trousers (depending on whether you want legs on show) and some fabulous shoes a lovely bag and stylish costume jewellery. It's important to feel comfortable on the day. You'll enjoy it more. Good luck!

I have a strapless slip thing and I also have the long shorts, but going to the loo in either, much less both, has to be planned like a military operation.

OldMeg Tue 27-Feb-18 13:22:35

Are these the scoop neck ones?

Beige and delicious video ???

Nanawind Tue 27-Feb-18 13:01:16

Thanks for your replies, I have been looking on line at shapewear and reading the reviews and your comments it doesn't look as though I'd be comfortable. As DH says it's only for one day his next words were waste of money.
DD says floaty tops and trousers are ok to wear to weddings now a days, so will look at those sort of outfits. Might take up the suggestion of a personal shopper that sounds a good idea.

Grangegran1 Tue 27-Feb-18 11:59:33

Oh my goodness. Be comfortable. You could end up like Sheila on Call the Midwife (Christmas 2017 programme) struggling into her girdle. It was the best thing about last Christmas for me!

Lilypops Tue 27-Feb-18 11:53:34

Hear Hear Granny Gravy !!We have earned the right to let it hang out and be comfy, We have had our turn of roll ons, suspenders ,we don't need to impress ,just be ourselves,

jamtart27 Tue 27-Feb-18 11:45:09

I found the shorts style rolled up my legs creating a strange ridge ? hold it in tights are a good option if wearing a dress/skirt as they seem to firm the wobble whilst not being too girdle like , don't spoil the day by not being able to eat, drink , dance or wee ? enjoy X

Barmeyoldbat Tue 27-Feb-18 11:40:16

Tried a shareware about two years ago but it just moved the fat to somewhere else. I would buy a comfortable outfit and enjoy the day.

Ukulele28 Tue 27-Feb-18 11:37:44

I have several items of shape wear, all from M&S. My favourite has legs that slim to mid thigh, also control your behind and have tummy/waist control. They go all the way up to your bra so give a smooth silhouette. Also have the same sort of thing minus the shorts/thigh shaper. Have them in black and natural, comfortable once on and not too expensive. Then of course there's Spanx , very good but more expensive.
