My hair seems to be getting thinner with each birthday
sad
Does anyone have the same issue?

Barmeyoldbat Fri 27-Apr-18 10:39:49

Marianna I am the same as you, not much change in the hair except a bit more on the face?

aquafish Fri 27-Apr-18 10:55:25

Absolutely! Just had to buy a plughole unblocker to sort things out- can only assume it’s my hair causing the problem- yeuch!! Got an appointment next week at a new hairdressers, hoping she can work miracles on my bob!

I can recommend Ideal world, the shopping channel, for a good selection of wigs They have a good return if not satisfied policy. I like their collections. have bought the wigs by Raquel Welch and really like the silver mist colour option.

I am 60 and have suffered thinning hair and lost patches also have frontal alepecia treat, which is hair loss all around the front hairline and eye brows, I use caffeine shampoo which has helped with the thinning of the hair as I had thick hair luckily but just a few hairs for brows so eye pencil for them, unfortunately it is part of the ageing process, and the worst thing, (naturally) is we worry about it and that doesn't help, just wish the whiskas on my chin would stop growing, better to have thin hair then not at all, sure you are all lovely whatever your hair type.

I was starting to feel desperate when my scalp could clearly be seen at the front of my scalp, with frightening amounts of hair on my brush each day. I had long hair that I wore brushed back in a pony tail or clip , so it was very noticeable. I started taking Biotin supplements (for hair nails and skin) which really helped reduce the amount of loss. I also went to a hairdresser who suggested a shorter style with a fringe. Everyone tells me it makes me look younger and of course the hair is not being constantly pulled back, so my hairline is recovering nicely. I accept that hair thins with age, but other factors such as stress, hormones ect.play a part. So it's worth taking advice.
On the subject of wigs, I have six short blond ones that my late mother rarely wore and would like to donate them to an alopecia group or cancer charity here in Essex, but I can't find details of anyone near me. They were about three hundred pounds each so if I can help any of you ladies out there I would gladly send them to you.

My friend has started wearing a wig and it looks really good. She went to a local specialist who makes a lot of wigs for ladies undergoing chemotherapy. It wasnt cheap but she no longer pays to have her own hair coloured, and she is much less self conscious.

My sympathies to you, when I was in my thirties my hair, which was quite fine but lots of it, starting shedding at a frightening rate. My GP arranged for me to have 6 weekly vitamin B injections which cured it. Is it worth asking your GP if there are supplements you could take or have a blood test to if you are short of anything?

My friend has had treatment by Philip Kingsley (trichologist who makes shampoos) for a few years. It really made a difference but it’s in London and pricey

That is wonderful and I am so pleased for you. Could you let us know where you ordered it from? Is that allowed? Thank you so much. Happy new you x

I am not 60 yet and my hair is long but it is not as full of body and shine as it once was and I tend to put it in a ponytail. I use hot oil conditioners and blow dry it. It is well trimmed and maintained but when I brush my hair I do notice more hair in brush so it must be thinning. I thought it might be down to colouring it. There is not much we can do as we can't hold back time.

I’ve got very curly hair which used to be thick and rather ‘bushy’. I can even recall having it thinned out. How I wish that it was still like that. I take a biotin supplement which has helped a bit. But I have to be careful that I comb it so that it covers all the thin parts at the back of my head. I hate it, can’t afford Nioxin, though I use a shampoo free conditioning cleanser (Grow Gorgeous) which is supposedly better for your hair. I think there’s been an improvement. Good luck with sorting your problem Amiesgran

Like so many my hair has been thinning since my 50s and just recently I've noticed I can see my scalp :-(

I'm going to look into some of the products mentioned. Ive been using a thickening shampoo from Holland & Barrett but I'm up for giving other things a go.

I know it will only make a small difference but I'll take any improvement I can get.

The wig option sounds interesting :-) May have a look at that too.

My advice is don’t write it off to age!
It can sometimes be a symptom of an under active thyroid gland. I know I suffer.

looseloafers Fri 27-Apr-18 15:36:33

Hi all. My hair just got thinner and thinner to the point I didn’t like going out on a windy day! I found myself getting more and more self conscious! Enough I said!! I went to a wig shop and bought 2 short pixie cut ones! FANTASTIC! So ladies don’t put up with thin hair. I go swimming and out on the windy days without a second thought by the way I’m 74

Envious Fri 27-Apr-18 16:00:44

I think some medications can effect our hair also. I took a statin once that caused my hair to look greasy almost as soon as it was washed and I had hair loss.

Panache Fri 27-Apr-18 16:47:41

As a newcomer to the short pixie style wig............at nearing 80 years............. I certainly endorse your post looseloafers, and am delighted to have quite a few interested enough to have followed my example since I "announced" this awhile ago on this very thread!!
I would go as far as to add........the best thing since sliced bread!!
Can`t wait to get my own thinning mane cut in the exact same style..........so I really have no bad hair days ever again!

Gout drugs can cause hair loss as I found with my late mother. But mine became very thin last year when I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. By February you could see the scalp on the top of my head. I saw an ad online for Wilkinsons Grow Me shampoo, conditioner and hair serum. I started using it then and now two months later you can see a lot of short hairs growing and my scalp is not so visible. Also my hair has stopped excessively falling out. Just the odd hair on my hairbrush. Early days yet but I hope it keeps improving. I even stopped colouring my hair last summer in case that was also a cause so I now have white hair.

I read an article recently that suggested that most of us wash our hair too frequently, and also use too much shampoo when we do.
I’ve started using much less shampoo, hardly enough to produce any lather, and the tiniest bit of conditioner, and not washing my hair more than twice a week. It does seem to have improved the texture & volume of my hair.

Baggs Fri 27-Apr-18 21:15:36

I only use water on my hair. My head is a lot less itchy since I abandoned shampoo.

lemongrove Fri 27-Apr-18 21:15:42

Good for you Panache some wigs are lovely, am quite envious ( but don’t need one at the moment.)
Janeainsworth you could revisit your old afro look smile
I have looked at the link you supplied Panache the amount of styles and colours is staggering!

janeainsworth Fri 27-Apr-18 21:36:50

That would really frighten the horses lemon grin

I'm 59, and have noticed that my fringe seems to be getting thinner. I dye my hair, so that may be causing it. On the plus side, since I've stated the menopause (only a year ago!) I've noticed that I never have to shave my armpits, and only need to do my legs about once a month or so!

LynneB59 Fri 27-Apr-18 21:53:23

In addition, I was my hair every day, and always have done. Hairdressers have always told me that my hair is fine but that I have got a lot of it (whatever that's supposed to mean)

GabriellaG Fri 27-Apr-18 21:59:53

Vitamin D3 also Biotin tablets.
They won't replace hair but will, over time, strengthen the hair you have left.
Don't brush too vigorously and only wash once or twice a week.

GabriellaG Fri 27-Apr-18 22:19:16

We lose an average of 100 hairs a day due to old dead hair dropping out to make way for new hair growing. I have plastic things which fit in the plug-holes in my basin, bath and shower.
I invested in two types of Mason Pearson bristle brushes, expensive but best for your hair and only wash my hair once a week, sometimes leaving it longer than a week. I don't blast it with heat either but let it almost dry naturally then finish with dryer on low.
I've had dyed, tinted and bleached hair continuously for the past 56 years and it hasn't affected the thickness, in fact, hairdressers have often remarked that it takes ages to dry because it's thick. Mum and dad had thick hair and no hair loss so it may be inherited.
