Looking for one of these - anyone got any recommendations please?

This is the reply I have had from Lands End:

"Lands' End does not use, purchase or source live plucked down. It is a barbaric practice that is completely out of line with our values. All of our Down products contain 100% Responsible Down Standard (RDS), certified down, which the highest quality responsibly-sourced down available. The origin of all of our Down products can also be tracked through a unique QR code attached to each garment

We operate a zero tolerance policy to ensure that our suppliers, vendors and all involved parties of our supply chain adhere to the highest standards of compliance and ethics."!

Thanks for the info about ethical down. I was pretty shocked when I found out the circumstances of how they collect down. sad

I have seen one I like on Lands End and have emailed them to find out how they source the down.

Yes, would reinforce what others have said about making sure you buy from an ethical, cruelty-free source.

I bought mine from Hobbs in the summer - they were havig a sale of winter coats - its had £50 off I put it in my basket and left it there and they sent me another 25% off- its beautiful- full length with a hood so cosy, smart and will last years.

I bought mine 3 yrs ago from Landsend and it has been the warmest coat that I have ever had,I got it when it was on sale for £65.00 reduced from £129.00 worth while waiting for the sales.

Mine is "Norwegian" brand. £40 from TK Maxx. Not bulky at all and folds into the duck pocket pictured.

What a useful thread for those of us who want to be warm but avoid cruelty - thanks for starting it Lucky

Just looked up Save-the-Duck coats that use eco-friendly down - my goodness they are cashing in there!

Luckygirl Tue 20-Nov-18 22:41:23

Iam - there is now a code for humane down collection and there is a website with a list of companies that adhere to that code.

I will also look up the fake down - thanks Pitt - which just happens to be my maiden name!

humptydumpty Tue 20-Nov-18 22:13:00

sorry dodgy space bar!

Fake down is available.

Izabella Tue 20-Nov-18 21:34:41

Yes I had no idea about this until I backpacked through China for 3 months some time ago. I saw it for myself. Horrific.

lemongrove Tue 20-Nov-18 21:10:43

These coats are fine if you are on the thin side, otherwise you can end up looking like The Michelin Man.

Iam64 Tue 20-Nov-18 20:11:57

Thanks Izabella, I posted that link to facebook. I read several years ago about the horrific lives these poor ducks live and determined never to contribute to their suffering by buying products filled with Down, ever again.

LandsEnd sale this week has down coats and jackets on offer. I'm awaiting the arrival of a jacket.

NanKate Tue 20-Nov-18 19:37:42

I bought a down coat from Land’s End in the sale last year at Kitty’s suggestion and it has proved to be the warmest, lightest coat I have ever had. A result ?

Pittcity Tue 20-Nov-18 19:37:27

I got one in TK Maxx.

blue25 Tue 20-Nov-18 19:32:38

Another vote for Uniqlo

Luckygirl Tue 20-Nov-18 18:31:17

Well - that is all a bit of a downer! grin

I have looked up the companies that adhere to the relevant code on humane sources of down.

MawBroon Tue 20-Nov-18 18:31:01

I have a puffer coat from Joules-synthetic padding, not too heavy either.

kittylester Tue 20-Nov-18 18:27:11

Lands End - pricey but wear well! Often have offers or you can find a voucher code!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 20-Nov-18 18:16:56

I was just going to say that Isabella- well done ??

We should all be aware of the ethical principles and origins of goods before purchasing.
