Feeling frumpy and old

Always looked young for my age but now I don't think I do. I'm nearly 70. Skin not as good as it was. Hair thinning. Also I find I can't wear heels any more so end up wearing flat boots which, at my height of 5'5", make me look frumpy. Don't want to wear jeans but can't seem to find good-fitting trousers either. Constantly wear a hat to keep out the cold and to disguise my grey roots. Feel I am turning into an old lady whereas I used to feel quite glam right up to my late 50s I'd say. Would like to turn this around but not sure where to start.

Any top tips for a TURKEY NECK hmm

Forget heels but get the same height boost from wedge heels. Red lipstick always adds glam and treat yourself to a regular manicure.

Why do we worry about not wearing heels - remember the late Princess of Wales...........trendy flats

sharon103 Thu 07-Feb-19 14:31:18

Ha ha! Ksing I know what you mean with the mirror. I've got one too.

Treat yourself to a day at the hairdresser.a hair do really can pick you up.get a style that's easy to keep.

No heels for me, they are instruments of torture! I have one pair of slim fitting ‘best’ trousers and loads of others that either don’t fit or are not flattering so I usually revert to skinny jeans and flat boots.
The best thing I ever did was let my coloured hair turn grey. It took almost a year for all the colour to grow out and now my hair looks better than it has for years.
I was 70 last August it was a shock, but now I’m embracing it.
Just be happy with yourself, I’m sure you are gorgeous.

Ha ha Miss A. It's nice to look ones best but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. All older women have to suffer the indignity of being invisible even if they dress from head to toe in psychedelic colours. We all age differently and as G Greer once wrote nobody ages like anybody else - some of us will age from the inside out, remaining relatively unwrinkled, and bright eyed long after our organs have clogged up and bones crumbled, others will look stringy and old as Methuselah but will be able to run the London marathon in 4 hours, some will be as strong as horses but totally reliant on help because their brains are melting. I think life's too short to worry too much about it.

Aww you just need a bit of pampering.
Have a look online at hairstyles & colours. My hair has now turned a very bright white, which is on trend, and I jazz it up into fashionable styles. If yours isn't quite at this stage it could be or another great colour by an hairdresser
Get your eyebrows waxed, and consider tinting the. For your skin exfoliating is a Must, and you can get some rough textured little pads for this to use on your face and neck with a facial wash.
I haven't worn heels for years, but I have some funky low heeled boots and glam trainer style flats, also I wear ballet shoes with a dress.
Leggings or straight legged jeans or trousers with a long top look great. Try M & S, Bonmarche, Roman Originals and Dorothy Perkins do some that come a little higher to hide the midriff bulge
Have fun, and let us have an update soon x

Nice to know I'm not alone. I agree, it is the time of year, caught sight of myself in the bathroom mirror and wondered, "Who is that old woman?" Remember doing so last year at about the same time in February.

Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate the colours of the clothes in our wardrobes?

I can relate to a lot of these comments.I'm now 67,looking back at photos of myself in my 50s, I looked young for my age then.My husband, who was older than me,had a lot of health problems,it started when I was 58,he finished up in a care home,he passed away last year.I feel that it all took its toll on me as well,I look old for my age now,and I don't make the same effort now.I don't look happy any more, that doesn't help.

As someone else said, some days I look, IMO, not too bad. Other times, depending on health etc. I look pretty rough. Recently went on hols with a very glam early 70's friend. I'm sure people thought I was her mother, quite depressing. However, as early death is probably the only alternative to ageing, I will be grateful for life and love and good times. My 4 year-old DGD thinks I'm pretty. smile

For those of you with frozen shoulders I got rid of mine in 6 weeks with acupuncture as opposed to the doc telling me 18 months with physio. It cost me a few hundred pounds but it was worth it.

I love a lot of the ideas especially the Red Carpet. That is excellent. I guess most of us put others first and perhaps from time to time we should put ourselves first. I know that when I ever do dress up I feel better for it. Such an effort though isn't it.! Thanks, everyone. This is a great site and you've all cheered me up considerably and given me a lot of food for thought. Yes I do have a daughter who, thankfully, does give me advice. This winter, however, she told me I was too old to wear a bobble hat and it took me ages to find one without a bobble. Also - straighteners - they are a godsend with my hair which sticks out anywhere it fancies as it has a mind of its own. Will come back later in the year with an update. Hoping for a vast improvement.

If you haven’t read it do read her book’ I feel bad about my neck’ it is sooo true!

Jalima1108 Thu 07-Feb-19 13:06:06

day creams with SPF.
Yes, choosing a day cream with SPF is a good idea.

Getting 'summer ready' can take a bit longer (hairy legs can be hidden in the winter grin)

Nanna58 Thu 07-Feb-19 13:02:36

I agree with the wonderful Nora Ephron about the level of maintenance now needed, I too am just “ 12 hours a week from looking like a bag lady”?

Chino Thu 07-Feb-19 12:28:38

I am 80 and have noticed a big difference in my skin looking lined and my hair is definitely thinning but I have to take steroid tablets for polymyalgia at present which probably has not helped.
However I wear makeup every day (would not dream of going out without it) also colour my hair at home every 8 weeks or so.
Never wear high heels any more but still enjoy buying new clothes, usually bright colours as I feel black and grey do not help you to look good.
Strangely enough my 2 daughters who are in their 50s never wear makeup but it is something I have always done

Edithb Thu 07-Feb-19 12:25:15

My mother wore make up right to the end at 94 and I follow her example. I am also nearly 70 with thinning hair but I am growing it longer and have layers in it. I have it dyed every five weeks but the one thing that makes a huge difference to my dry and lifeless hair is GHD straighteners used with their heat protection spray, it would’ve my desert island luxury. I wear leggings and jeans with longer tops, or nice dresses in summer. I’m a fan of Liz Earle skin care and No 7 day creams with SPF.

BUT we're all still here...!!!
MissA as always you've made me smile...
I'm sure we're all beautiful on the inside...that's what counts...

amt101 Thu 07-Feb-19 12:19:31

Lovely humorous replies that I can relate to. Thank you all for a gentle laugh.

Herbie9 Thu 07-Feb-19 11:43:31

I needed a good laugh as my dh is in hospital and I certainly got that. So much to relate to and I'm an octogenarian. Shall be trying to find a poem that starts "I'm rich, I have gold in my teeth" but having a senior mo can't lay my hands on it. Perhaps another GN knows of this. Is'nt age just a number!

Grammaretto Thu 07-Feb-19 11:42:06

Dangerous to ask people to guess an age esp young ones. I had a big 0 birthday and had to say which one in case they guessed the next!
I also have a Milof 93 who still dresses well and always looks amazing. She is petite and that probably helps. Note to self : must eat well and less.

Gonegirl Thu 07-Feb-19 11:42:05

Mind you, I've got on a Superdry sweater over a Marks and Sparks shirt. With ancient black M and S joggers. So I'm not too shabby - apart from the fact that I've had the same things on since Saturday. shock

Gonegirl Thu 07-Feb-19 11:38:55

mabon1 You're going out aren't you? You don't really wear all that round the house. Do you?! I've not got the energy to put brooches on, and I'm younger than you. 77.
