Feeling frumpy and old

Always looked young for my age but now I don't think I do. I'm nearly 70. Skin not as good as it was. Hair thinning. Also I find I can't wear heels any more so end up wearing flat boots which, at my height of 5'5", make me look frumpy. Don't want to wear jeans but can't seem to find good-fitting trousers either. Constantly wear a hat to keep out the cold and to disguise my grey roots. Feel I am turning into an old lady whereas I used to feel quite glam right up to my late 50s I'd say. Would like to turn this around but not sure where to start.

I don't think the OP s post is sad. Horses for courses I think. Some people are more interested in their appearance and dont want to look frumpy and thats fine. Some people are less interested and that's fine too. If the OP wants a bit of an overhaul and it makes her feel good then why not?

I find this OP quite sad really. I long ago learned to love myself the way I was and so I've moved into a happy, contented and proud old age with no qualms at all.

I always look smart and clean, am reasonably well dressed within my budget. Nothing flash, just appropriate.

I wear simple jewellry : pearl earrings and a pounamu pendant or silver chains according to where I'm going.

My hair was always like a dandelion clock so that's not changed grin - but I love me and how I look even if others don't.

As my dgs sometimes says, 'No one is the boss of me but me.' grin

I attended a friend's 'very big birthday' party last night and, after standing around at the pre-dinner reception, I realised that the shoes that felt so comfy in the shop were nothing of the sort. What a relief today to get back into my comfortable but, I like to think, trendy Skechers trainers! I will be making a visit soon to the shop that sells ends of ranges and expand my collection!

wears only trainers, they are very stylish ones I might add

Good for her! I have to wear 'clumpy shoes' and have a particular pair of trainers which have been much admired by a lot of younger people.
The only time I wear elasticated trousers, though, is for yoga!

I'm with you Luckylegs. I have had so many setbacks looks wise. I have lost all my hair, most of my teeth (as a child) but I have done something about it and for some inexplicable reason I keep going, keeping my weight down, wearing make up and buying nice clothes. I won't give up, despite Mother Nature doing her best to beat me!

MawBroon Sun 17-Feb-19 08:12:37

Why on earth would you “go down a size” ?
Clothes should fit you and it may depend on the label whether you are a 10/12/14.
Over tight clothes are far from trendy!
Marla Wynn may be worth considering (although she seems overpriced to me) because you have the 30 days to send them back.

I could never just let myself go. I have no hairs on my legs, but if I did it would be off, few pounds overweight but won't get fat. It's a matter if pride in myself to look as good as I can for my age. I also love nice underwear although no one but me ever sees it, certainly no big pants.. My closest friend on reaching seventy has put on well over 2 stone, wears only trainers, they are very stylish ones I might add, loose elasticated trousers and big tops to accommodate her expanding figure. She munches on sweets at regular intervals during the day. She said she has spent all her life looking the part and working full time, now she is just going to be her, she us always clean and tidy. Me, I will keep fighting it, but it's getting harder.

Read recently on posting by Twin2 about Robbell trousers.
I am a size 12 and looking for trousers without zips which are still quality and well made.
I dont want super fitting tight. I have also concidered Marla Wynne trousers but some have varied reviews.
My question to trendy grans out there is do I order my actual size a 12 or would you go down a size - without looking like mutton dressed as lamb!!. Any advice welcome

Ditto Merlotgran and Grammaretto!! I'm 71 and just had a new hairstyle with a different hairdresser and booked to have a few warm, subtle lights added next week. Be positive and help those who are less able. Stay away from negative people, they bring you down. Spring is around the corner!

Imm6
good fitting modern trousers I find Wallis good for me, I'm size 12, 5ft.
As for buy less frequently but spend more, I always have.

It's not you.

I need a new wardrobe but am so fed up with looking and then ending up keeping with the rather old-fashioned stuff I have.

BTW, went around the shops on my own today. Is it me or is most of it total rubbish. In some of the big department stores there was a lot of tat. Can't imagine anyone wearing half of it. Just wanted a decent V-necked sweater but could only find ones where the back of the sweater hangs down six inches below the front. What happened to classic items? Am seriously thinking of shopping online as some websites look quite good and different (Pure for example). Though a bit expensive they look as if they might be good quality. I'm not rolling in money by any means but thinking it might be better to buy less frequently but spend more. Does anyone else think that?

lmm6 Sat 09-Feb-19 19:59:12

Lilypops, I can't find decent jeans either. Just want a good cut in dark grey or dark blue but all the ones I find are either cheap rubbish or ones which are fashionably torn. Also where can we get good-fitting modern trousers? Treated myself to a burgundy top today and straight patterned skirt to match. Looking forward to wearing them. Must stop thinking oh it's cold so let's put on the thick hat and scarf. So easy to just look like Old Woman.

hereshoping do you wear your specs when looking in the bathroom mirror? grin
Agree, Facetime always makes people look awful.

Jalima1108 Fri 08-Feb-19 14:29:21

hereshoping my bathroom mirror is rather flattering, so I go out with confidence smile until I catch sight of myself in a mirror or a shop window!

Carolina55 Fri 08-Feb-19 11:37:19

Last two comments so true - my daughter and granddaughter look so lovely when we FaceTime and my face looks like it needs ironing! I keep moving to hold my head at an angle to even the wrinkles out and get told to keep still and stop fidgeting!

Luckily I was reared on the ‘handsome is as handsome does and not how handsome looks’ parenting method so never felt my looks were what defined me and I care less as long as I’m clean and tidy.

rockgran Fri 08-Feb-19 11:06:23

I agree that Facetime camera is so unflattering. It really puts me off!

hereshoping Fri 08-Feb-19 10:11:32

I think that I look pretty good for my age in the bathroom mirror, very few wrinkles and skin still looks much as it did in my thirties.
BUT
I recently got an I pad and have face timed my two daughters.
They look gorgeous but I look unbelievably old and wrinkled and haggard.
That camera must be lying, surely?

Lilypops Fri 08-Feb-19 09:42:25

I try to keep up the appearance , I have a good haircut and highlights , I invest in good makeup especially foundation in an effort to just look the best I can for my age (71) I like wearing jeans but I can't seem to find the right fit, I don't suit skinny ,but I don't like straight legs jeans from Marks, Can anyone recommend a decent pair that don't look too tight ? I tried super skinny on and my legs looked like sausages ,

Lily65 Fri 08-Feb-19 08:55:20

I would like to lose some weight but I don't see myself as less of a person ( pardon the pun) because I am not slim and gorgeous.

This constant obsession with weight and outward appearance does nothing for women.
