Hair ruined

My son cuts my hair at the back with an electric trimmer thing and I keep checking until he has cut enough off. I like to do the front and sides myself. I prefer apprentice girls at the hairdresser as they don't seem to mind my micro -managing the cutting.

Both my DC would rather go to the dentist than the hairdressers!

Being the mother of 3 daughters I go t used to disasters in hairdressers. First comment was “It will grow!” Then I advised wash it yourself and see if you can change the style a bit! Don’t know if it will work for you but hope you learn to live with it!

Cosmosw, hair grows at about 1/2 inch a month which will make a significant appearance change from the present length.

If your hair was very long 1/2 inch would not make much difference but 1/2 added does change short hair quire a lot in texture and appearance.

What a fuss! Nobody has died, the house hasn't burned down. It will grow again in a few weeks.

Also in the 80s, my usually very competent hairdresser suggested a 'soft' perm. I came out looking like Kevin Keegan. Never again!

In the 80’s I went to a salon for my one and only ever perm. Hairdresser left perming solution on for 45 minutes while she cut and blow dried another customer’s hair. The next day my hair snapped off all over. I got my money back.

Hopefully will grow back quicker than you think. Give it a couple of weeks to settle down and wash and dry it yourself a few times. It may settle. If not you may need to pop to another salon to get it tidied up. Afraid most of us ladies have had a bad haircut at one time or another.

lol bikergran I have a fringe 'thing' too. They know me well enough NOT to cut much off it!

Sounds like your existing hairstyle didn’t suit you and the hairdresser was trying to make it look better.

My last bad experience at a hairdressers was 3 years ago, when I asked for a perm (because I have arthritic hands and I thought it would be easier to manage). I asked the stylist for soft curls and warned her that my hair takes a curl really quickly. I left the salon looking like Barbara Streisand in A Star is Born (google image it!!!). It took ages to get it all out!

But it's only hair and it grows back. I would take the salon up on their offer of a cut and blow - they have at least offered to try and fix things for you. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill!

I dont think hairdresser understand the term "DON'T TOUCH! MY FRINGE"!! grrrrrrrr

I don't know how they do it when they do it! but they touch it ! tut!

Cosmos, As a day has passed since you posted, are you getting used to the new style? Has anyone commented either favourable or unfavourably ? Are you still as upset? just wondering.....

The colour that is, not the hair!

Having a bad treatment at the hairdresser's really pulls you down, you have my sympathy, and so annoying when they won't listen. They always think they know best!

I have had the same hairdresser for 28 years now, she has become like an old friend. But she gets bored with my current style and likes to change it Last time she used a noticeably darker dye, I commented as soon as I saw my wet hair in the mirror, but she was unabashed. Everyone at home and work either told me they hated it or I got the silent stare treatment, so I know it is not a good look, and I hate it each time I catch sight of myself in the mirror. I will have to live with it for six weeks until I can afford another visit, when I will ask her to put it back to the old colour.

In the grand scheme of things it is nothing but a minor, temporary annoyance, but I will be so glad to get rid of it!

As the saying goes, a woman's crowning glory is her hair. I feel for you. I've been there a couple of times too. Alas, we can't stick it back on. I don't know if it's expensive but having extensions put in your hair might help? I know it's devastating but it will grow. If it were me, I'd leave a negative feedback on their website. I'd also advise that if anyone's looking for a new hairdresser to read feedback on the website first or get friends recommendations.

I have no words of comfort for you I’m sorry. It will just have to grow out- given time& hopefully you will get used to the new style. My daughter was awfully upset a couple of years ago with a stylist but foolishly paid £75 for her hair to be ruined instead of informing this newish salon that she had not asked for it to be dyed& would only be paying for the cut. There was a language barrier because the salon only had one or two English speaking stylists- however my daughter showed a picture of the exact colour, cut and style she required to the girl who did not speak English. She had to then go back to a different hairdresser to pay another £75 for it to be put right after it was ruined. Very expensive hair experience. What made the whole incident worse was that the first stylist took pictures of her creation on an iPad to put in her portfolio without asking my daughter first. She was almost in tears leaving that salon. Luckily the stylist had not chopped into her hair too much, just dyed it chocolate brown at the crown and lilac at the ends. It was an ombré effect but my daughter absolutely hated it. She vowed she would never set foot in that new salon again& sticks to the original salon she had been visiting for years.

I have often had this problem. I know my hair! I know what I want, but often the hairdresser thinks they know better. Sadly I never have the nerve to complain - what can they do once it is cut? Currently still growing out a sheep-shearing cut from January.
All I know is that I will NOT go back to that stylist again.

cosmos I have great sympathy for you. I think probably we have all been there at one time or another. It is so depressing when you end up with a terrible haircut and can't cope with styling it. Years ago, when we lived in Sussex, I had an absolutely wonderful hairdresser but I've never been able to find anyone else as skilled, even when I've paid a lot of money.

The only thing I can suggest is to have it trimmed regularly to get rid of the uneveness. If it is really getting you down, perhaps you could consider getting a good wig (though I'm not sure I would wear one).

I don't think hairdressers receive the same lengthy training that they used to years ago.

I remember being talking into a demi wave when I was in my thirties. I was told it was thicken the appearance of my thin hair. Instead I got tight curls like an old lady. I was so upset I asked them to cut it really short, removing the curls. I hadn't the confidence at that age to refuse payment.

Yes, take up their offer but insist on their Top Stylist.

cosmos I'm sure you feel awful and very cross so I'm not going to offer you any platitudes to try to make you feel better. Instead if you would like a good laugh involving a bad haircut have a look at the TV series Fleabag. In the meantime treat yourself to something moral boosting like some new make up or something to wear. I hope you are feeling batter about it soon.

The best style and streaked colours on my hair was in Australia in 1984. It was so professionally done and streaked in copper/gold/and blonde it was fabulous. The colours weren't too garish but you could see in certain lights and of course the sun that there were hints of colours.

Why can't that be done here ? Yes it was expensive but well worth it for looking and feeling good. A one-off experience.

Nothing worse when your hair's been badly done as there's not much you can do to undo it all.
