Solid shampoo - have you tried ?

I've been making my own soap even though the curing process can take up to a month.

I've not used my home made soap in my hair but I'm going to give it a try!

We have several refill shops and stalls near us now. Perhaps one of these is local to you?

Not sure about solid shampoo and don't like soap bars. Why can't we get refills? I think it's been mentioned before that the Body Shop used to offer that service

I went back to bar soap years ago, by personal choice. I have bought Lush's solid shampoo and conditioner, in an attempt to cut down on my plastic waste. I don't rate the conditioner so went back to my usual, the shampoo however is lovely and I love it, but my scalp has a habit of getting irritated and so I'm back on a medicated shampoo too, (shame).

i have gone back to soap. am trying to get tinned toothpaste... write to the companies and suggest your ideas. india has shampoo in big vats ,and you take along your jar/bottle anything not made of plastic.seychelles make their own soap too...all natural ingredients.........finally found a shop that sells soda crystals in a cardboard box......

I didn't know there was such a thing as solid conditioner and shampoo. I will try them.

Been using bar soap in bathrooms for a while now. Been trying to find a shampoo bar that doesn't contain palm oils. With the soap bars had yo teach grandchildren how to use them. Thought it was grand rubbing until soapy bubbles appeared. Spent ages playing at the sink

Been using it for a long time now and use solid conditioner too.

Lush is full of bad chemicals, at least one is potentially dangerous but when I rang the head office they said it's " probably" only a small amount. They couldn't say how much. I certainly won't be buying from them again. The best products I've tried are from thepureplanetcompany.com - absolutely pure & also vegan.

I use funky soap shampoo bar with sea kelp only £3 from amazon I only got it for holidays but it’s really great

Try "The Soap Mine" beautiful solid shampoo and wonderful soaps. All hand made in small batches by a lady in Beddgelert, North Wales

Have switched to using Method washing up liquid, anti bacterial spray and bathroom spray cleaner. Bottles can be refilled and all products are produced with bio degradable ingredients. Also just had my first delivery of Who gives a Crap loo rolls, tissues and kitchen rolls. All made with bamboo and profits go to help build toilets in under developed countries. Trying to do the best for the environment.

Use a plastic or metal hair catcher thingy. I have one in the bath and in basin.
Drains didn't routinely get blocked years ago before the advent of all the gels and liquids on offer nowadays so there is no reason for them to get blocked now.
If you store soap without the wrapping it hardens and lasts longer.

I have swapped to bar soaps and shampoo about 2 years ago and found rinsing with vinegar water brilliant. It is so much better when travelling as I cut the soaps in half anyway.

Xrgran, please tell us more about the deodorant in a tin. What is it called?

I have very fine hair and have washed my hair every day since I was 13. At the age of 57 I have finally managed to wash my hair only once or twice a week with the help of SLR free soap and dry shampoo which I am now replacing with talcum powder. So another travel friendly product. My hair looks much more voluminous therefore I could get rid of hair mousse. I have still got some.bottles to use up but look forward to a clutter free bath and shower very soon.

It's many years since I used 'bar soap shampoo' for hair washing - I'm pretty certain that it was 'Derbac Soap' at the time, because one of my children had come home from school with headlice .

I'll definitely check out the possibilities for the newer bar shampoos, though - get rid of as much of that pesky 'single-use plastic' that I can .

I've never developed the habit of buying liquid handwash and haven't bought shower-gel for about 10yrs. I'm a dedicated 'bar of soap gal' and staying that way.

I'm another one who has trouble with the Lush shops. There is one in Chester and when I come out of M&S, I have to cross the road to avoid the smell. It brings on an asthma attack.

Don't buy Dove products! They contain palm oil which is a threat to the existence of orang utans!

Sounds a good idea, but we cannot get solid shampoo here in Denmark, or across the border in Germany, as far as I know.

I had never even heard of it, I hope it turns up in our shops soon.

If bars of soap were so great why did we ever change to the liquid form in plastic bottles?

I like the Friendly Soap Lavender Geranium shampoo bar. It's vegan, cruelty free, no parabens or palm oil etc. Not expensive either.

Best to avoid SLS, I have been told. It's not intrinsically harmful and is there to make lather, but it strips the skin of oil - even a lot of baby stuff has SLS, and some prescription creams for dry skin contain it too! Seems quite mad - it is very hard to find anything without SLS in the ingredient list.

Lush shampoo bars do contain SLS. Probably why they lather well.
Not for me, just walking past the shop nearly chokes me.
Smells very synthetic.
