wearing make-up

I used to put on make-up, especially lipstick, eye shadow and mascara, before going to work in the morning. If we were going out at night I even had false eyelashes.
Then for the last 20 years or so everyone seems to have gone au naturel. But recently I've noticed more women, even my age, look as if they've started to make up again. Especially lipstick and foundation.
I don't think I could be bothered - what do you think?

Just going out now
Moisturiser, Estee Lauder tinted moisturiser on top, lipstick and a faint touch of oil on my grey brows.
I am 82.

I wear lipstick. I am very pale and it gives me a bit of colour.

The first job of the day is putting the 'face' on.
I wouldn't be seen dead without it.

A bit of face cream is necessary to protect from the sun, but that'll do me most days. A bit of blusher doesn't go amiss.

I can count on one hand the days I've worn makeup this school hol. Put some on yesterday (natural look, other people would think I'd got none on) and took a selfie, I was so impressed how much better and younger I looked.

Back to the work regime of daily makeup in a week when back to work.

People who don't wear make up, do you still use a sun screen on your face?

GabriellaG54 Thu 22-Aug-19 13:07:44

I wear mascara and SPF 30 Keihls untinted facial moisturiser, nothing else. Not for weddings, high days, holidays or at any other time.

I used to use eye make up when I was in my teens and twenties bu I never used foundation as I hate the feel of it on my skin. My DD took me shopping in Glasgow before my DS got married and insisted I got suitable make up. We went to one of the big department stores and I was made up professionally. I admit it looked quite good although still felt odd. Anyway on the big day I tried applying the same foundation myself and couldn't get it right at all. In the end I washed it off and went as I always do without any foundation and a tiny amount of eyeshadow. I daren't wear mascara as I knew I'd either rub it or cry!
I used to have my eyelashes tinted to avoid using mascara but gave that up after I was married.
Anyone need a tube of quite expensive foundation used only once?!

travelsafar Thu 22-Aug-19 12:49:21

Little bit of mascara, and sometimes lippy. Gave up on using foundation about three years ago, could never really find one that was the right colour, also fed up with having to put it on. Just wish i had better eyelashes then i would be totally make up free.

GrannyGravy, I too have to have matching underwear, and try to match it to the colour of my clothes!

GillT57 Thu 22-Aug-19 12:45:05

in summer I wear a tinted moisturiser, eyebrow colour ( when in between wax and tint), blue soft pencil around eye lashes, light brush of mascara. In winter, light foundation applied with a brush, and the same around the eyes. Takes me about 5 minutes in the morning, always blow dry my hair too, and always have painted toe nails. It is only badly applied make up you can see ( and criticise) Quizqueen, all those healthy, natural looking women are actually wearing carefully applied, appropriate products and feel a lot better for it!

In my youth, I always wore eye makeup (60's) and did until the past few years. Now, any kid of eyeliner or shadow gets "eaten up" by my greasy wrinkly eyelids! So now it's only lipstick. If I didn't wear that I don't think anyone would see my face.

Sue500 Thu 22-Aug-19 12:25:05

Always wear lipstick. Sometimes, tinted moisturiser and eyeshadow and mascara. But always use a moisturiser.

Liberating from what, jura?

jura2 Thu 22-Aug-19 12:20:26

it is very very liberating not to wear make-up anymore- pheeew. Mind you, I never wore much, even when I was young- as I never felt the need, apart from mascara and a bit of lippy.

Having lived in Hong Kong for 20 years, where image is everything (!), I rarely go out without my 'face' on - light foundation, eye shadow and liner, mascara, lippie and blusher. Doesn't take that long. If I'm home at the weekend and not going out then I don't bother!!

Pantglas1 Thu 22-Aug-19 11:59:59

My face looks washed out with any make up at all as hair is silver/gunmetal and lashes/brows fading. I try to have one or two days with nothing other than moisturiser, usually when I’m home all day.

I quite like the performance of putting my face on getting ready to go out, but do keep it very light, just adding definition rather than a mask. I’ve found that the dearer make-up does last all day and cheaper brands wear off after a few hours and need reapplication.

When I first went to work in 1939 the girls persuaded me to pluck my eyebrows and pencil a thin line which was then the fashion. They never grew back so I still have to pencil them in which I do daily and apply some lipstick. When I go out I use a touch of foundation, powder, mascara and blusher as well.
People do not believe my age.

I am 64 now and the only time I have worn makeup was when hubby and I took part in a television game show a couple of years ago and then the makeup person had to put it on for me

As I suffer with broken veins on my cheek bones and have done since my teens, I used to wear really thick foundation - photos of me in my teens made me look like I was a ghost !
I have found a water based gel from SBC that is Rose and Argan oil - I put it on everyday and it has calmed the redness amazingly. A few drops of rosehip oil added to my moisturiser has worked wonders too!
I now wear a much lighter mineral powder foundation and a touch of blusher and just mascara oh, and eyebrow pencil - very blonde eyebrows ( left a lot sparser than right after I had an accident that resulted in a scar from left eyebrow to hairline) and also very blonde eyelashes mean I need some colour there! Lip gloss and I'm done !

Craftycat Thu 22-Aug-19 11:46:39

I haven't left the house without makeup since I was 15- excepting holidays if I am on beach all day.
I wear a light foundation- usually a powder one, blusher, 3x eye-shadows & mascara. I had my eyebrows microbladed to save using eyebrow pencil. I wear false eyelashes for evenings if we are going out.
I see no point in letting myself go just because I am approaching 70 next year.
I use far less makeup now than I did when I was younger but I then I came out of hospital twice having given birth to 10.5 lb sons with 2 sets of false lashes on!
I sometimes wonder how much I have spent over the years!!

Cambia Thu 22-Aug-19 11:45:34

Go out barefaced but with a load of moisturiser on for my walk/jog early morning and then put make up on after breakfast. I can see the improvement immediately! Love make up and always have since I was 13 and drawing twiggy lashes in my face. Makes me feel good so definitely worth the effort. Oh and the workmen don’t recognise me later in the morning when I pass with make up rather than just a red face from jogging!!

Afeica1 Thu 22-Aug-19 11:32:46

Absolutely nothing and its so liberating!!

My past career it was a 'uniform standard' to wear the full works, so now I enjoy being able to run the brush through my hair and very occasionally apply some brow pencil before starting the day.

Either my [past] very strict skin care routine worked, or I'm just very lucky that I feel I look presentable as I am!

Used to wear makeup all the time but since retiring 4 years ago I don't bother much. If I'm going to the shop or to see a friend I'll wear lipstick, if I'm seeing a gentleman friend or the family I'll do the whole look, shadow, mascara & lipstick. Never wear foundation, it just makes the wrinkles look worse.
