What counts as “old lady clothes” nowadays?

I need the brilliance and sharp eyes of Gransnet! As I approach Birthday No..
61 , I worry more about dressing like an ”old lady”.
I’m aware that many clothing choices that look normal to me look old fashioned to my daughters.
It was ages before I realised my jeans were the “Wrong” length for example.
Is there anyone here with a keener fashion sense than mine who has a list of no-go looks that scream “EIGHTIES”?

My daughter was horrified when she admired a new top I was wearing, and found it came from EWM...thought that aged her!
As I get nearer to 80, my main criterion for clothes is being easy to put on and take off sad

I ordered two jumpers and a pair of trousers from next. The trousers are 4 inches too long despite being size Regular. Im 5ft 5". Jumpers did not suit my shape so everything to be returned.
I dont want old lady clothes but lots of items are aimed at younger people and dont fit.
Debenhams online shopping can work for me sometimes. Just got a lovely coat in the Principles range.
Some things are ok at M&S .
I dont understand their cropped trouser length for winter which they are styling with flat shoes. Do you wear tights or just have freezing ankles. ?

steer clear of anything from M&S...it's full of stuff that my Grannie wore

Wear what you're comfortable with. Don't worry what anyone else thinks or what's in fashion. Be yourself

Tiggy, so if its a no to jeans and leggings what is there? I had something from M and S ,a sort of harem style, which is discontinued!

I have photos of my Grandma, who must have been in her mid 70's possibly. It's funny thinking back. She never, ever wore trousers. I recall a green pattern dress, the fabric was something like upholstery fabric. She wore stockings and funny little lace up shoes , leather with a small heel. I have no memory of summer clothing, perhaps it was the same but a lighter weight. Never seen without a hat, which stayed out long after she had got home.

Mum was tweed and more tweed and frocks, all home made.

I’ve stopped wearing leggings. I’m Apple shaped and I’ve lost muscle tone in my legs so not a good look for me.

I like a boot cut trouser, I think they balance my shape better, but they do need to be worn with a heeled ankle boot I think.

Hate beige.... but love grey, have silver grey hair( not permed) who does perms nowadays!! I wear 3/4 length trousers.... pumps.... trainers.... tunics.... skinny jeans... short jackets... in fact I wear what I like. White Stuff is good.... Next is good.... M&S is what my mother would’ve worn at my age... no thanks.

I wear what I want. Today it's a leather skirt, black tights, red shoes, a red roll neck top and red/black jumper plus silver jewellery. Cos I'm doing #SecondHandSeptember both jumper and top are preloved. Don't think that's dressing like an old lady.

I see clothes I like, try them on and think oh dear, lovely but need to be in my teens again. So much is early 70s style I think, which I love but not on me now. However everyone is complementary on the sea-salt blue leafy blouse Larissa I bought last time in GB.

Sorry folks, but I don’t think leggings do anyone any favours - especially if you’re not built like a stick. I also hate skinny jeans and trousers - which is currently a major problem as I can’t find anything that I feel comfortable in.angry

I’ve always avoided specific fashion items preferring to go for classic and stylish. I prefer leaving manic fashion following to those much younger than me. So, my advice would be.....rise above negative comments. If you are comfortable and your mirror image pleases you....you are doing it right.

I think I must have reached the age of thinking comfort before style. I bought an unused pair of Rieker shoes in our charity shop yesterday without a second thought, couldn’t believe how comfy they were. When I checked the size at home, they’re an 8, and I’m a 7 (which is more than big enough, imo). They make my feet look like boats. blush

Polyester shouts "old lady"I usually but clothes from Bon Marche they are basically for mature women but look very modern, their trousers straight leg are the best for me, wouldnt be seen dead in those "drain pipe " trousers everyone seems to be wearing today despite how large their legs are.I dont think there is a certain age clothes fashion these days.We dress as we wish and try to be smart

Lessismore said nothing, which shows that she placed less importance on my gaffe than you did, which says a lot about you upping cudgels on someone else's behalf.
As for my pointing out spelling 'mistakes', not only did I stop doing it ages ago, but there are others who still do it.
Change the record, it's boring.

Yes, I agree, they always had strong winter colours which I love, purples teals, shades of burgundy.

Babs758 Sun 08-Sept-19 11:56:35

Arrrgh! Sorry Gone Girl! They look like daytime nighties.

maryhoffman37 Sun 08-Sept-19 11:50:55

I own no jeans and haven't worn them since a white pair in the 60s. Husband is same. They are such a uniform. And I don't like/don't wear blue so the choice is limited.

cc Sun 08-Sept-19 11:43:32

Sara65 - yes, I used to buy a lot of my clothes there but never went for the dated, patterned, droopy Monsoon look. I used to buy East shirts and tops and stitch up the slit sleeves that dangled in my food! Some of the East block prints were lovely, not at all fussy. And their colours were often great, with lots of clothes you could wear together.
I haven't seen a single item of clothing on the new website which I would even try on, let alone buy.

SparklyGrandma I agree with you about M&S V necks, they're often far too low for me, I'd need to wear something under them to avoid revealing all my Bravissimo. Its hard to find V necks that aren't too "school uniform" or too low to wear in public.

Bathsheba Sun 08-Sept-19 11:39:00

Gonegirl I think those frocks are brilliant. I'm gonna get one so I can wear it to the beach next summer - great for getting in and out of my cossie in privacy wink

Gonegirl Sun 08-Sept-19 11:38:53

Yes Annaram1. They've got a pretty, almost retro, look.

I’m very disappointed with the East relaunch, I used to buy almost everything there, and really missed it.
I find the new look, too frilly and too expensive, I did see a top I quite liked, but on closer inspection, saw it had a lot of dangly bits on the wrists, would have driven me around the bend!

MawB Sun 08-Sept-19 11:35:58

I think a sharp jacket (or coat) is essential as we get older - pastel fleeces do nobody any favours. Also clear colours - Doria Raglan may look superb in beige but for those who have gone grey it is far from flattering. Pity, because I have always loved camel/coffee/taupe and have some expensive wardrobe mistakes because these colours no longer do anything for me.

Annaram1 Sun 08-Sept-19 11:34:48

The old lady dresses posted by Gonegirl all look lovely to me. I might buy something from that range, instead of nipping down to my local charity shop to buy something Victorian.
