When wearing makeup becomes important

J have recently stopped tinting my hair as I have a scalp problem (psoriasis).

Am getting used to the new me, The new me who is almost white all over now.

I have decided that, in order to still look goo, and not just older than before, I really need to UP my makeup and wear foundation, blusher and lipstick. I also accentuate my eyebrows more.

Many of you on Gransnet declare they cannot be bothered with makeup any more, whereas I, personally, am finding it to be ever more important.

In my younger days apart from special occasions I never wore makeup. My skin was good then. It’s a different story now. I’m fairly wrinkle free but My skin is an uneven colour and blotchy. (Think Rudolph the red nose reindeer) The end of my eyebrows have disappeared. So I’d frighten people if I went out without a bit of foundation and eyebrow pencil

Interesting thread. I used to wear lots of dark eye makeup in the 1970s, black eyeliner and the lot. Now I haven't really worn makeup for years. I particularly dislike foundation, don't like the look on other people or the feel of it myself, if I put some on all I want to do is wash my face.
Now I have breast cancer and am having chemo so along with looking ghostly white I've lost my hair. I've decided that I might feel better if I do make an effort. Even bought a lipstick today.
I reckon just a bit of eye makeup and lipstick would make a big difference even without foundation.

My mum thought putting a bit of lippy on was the beginning of feeling better about anything.

I vary rarely wear more than a bit of lipstick but I decided to have a professional make-up done for my DD1's wedding. I hated the final result, I thought it made me look really old. I sat next to my MiL in church and she did not recognise me and had to be told who I was. Then when the photos came back she asked me 'who was that woman again?'
For DD2's wedding I did my own make-up and got many compliments. I'll never have a professional make-up again. Far better to experiment yourself and decide what suits you.

Always put my 'face' on before I go out!! Once spent the whole time in the supermarket avoiding the super glamourous wife of someone we knew as I'd nipped out with no make up

sharon103 Fri 01-Nov-19 15:22:34

Call me vain but I won't even answer the door without my 'face' on. It's my first job of the day.
I've worn make up since I was about 12. Only mascara for school though.
I use brown mascara and eyeliner now though instead of black, just a smidge of foundation and blusher and a light lippy. If ever we had a house fire, the first thing I'd grab would be my make up bag and pot of Nivea Creme.
I use perfume when going shopping, visiting etc but not when staying at home.
My mum only ever wore lipstick and she had a Max Factor powder compact.

Like you Sharon I have worn makeup from an early age and feel naked without.
I had an appointment with an opthalmologist and was asked to attend without makeup. I didn't know if that meant just eye makeup, but left the house fior the first time in about fifty five years without 'slap'. (It is my first job after showering !) I felt like a rabbit faciing the world without my armour . Eye makeup makes a difference that has to be seen to be believed, and can light up a face - I love it!

With you on this. Decided I was fed up having to keep having highlights to camouflage the grey roots and just stopped. Just had bleached layer on top to blend in whilst awaiting full grey to grow in. Due to the sudden change I started using mascara, foundation and a dab of lipstick. From mid blonde to grey thought my colouring needed a bit of a lift. On the plus side I find I can now wear different colours in clothing, colours I always fancied but just looked awful on me eg greys, reds.

Yes, wouldn't dream of going anywhere without full make up, eyes, lips, the lot. And now that my thyroid condition is causing me to have no eyebrows and awful thin hair through which you can see expanses of pink scalp, eyebrows too and wig. Which looks completely natural, nobody knows unless I tell them. The hair loss is devastating and I envy women I see of my age with lovely thick hair. Personally I don't like to see women without make up - I think it's lazy of them not to bother.

I love my make up i dont wear loads depends on the day but it wakes my face up and sets me up for the day, my family have been warned , when they bury me i want a full face before i meet my maker x

My mum wore make up until the day she died at ninety four, and I am the same. I also have my hair coloured. On my 70th birthday several people said that I looked nowhere near my age, and I don’t want to either! I see ladies of my age on the bus who have very masculine hair cuts and no make up and I feel quite sad that they seem to have given up.

sharon103 Fri 01-Nov-19 17:02:12

Eye make up does make a difference Rosina.
I would have worn sunglasses for that appointment and that's if I would have attended at all grin

glammanana Fri 01-Nov-19 17:08:51

Giulia What a fabulous thread right up my street,I have had a love affair with make-up since my early teens after always watching my mother making up her face every day before she went down to make our breakfast.
I am very fair with long blonde hair and always put on tinted moisturiser and lip gloss as soon as I finish brushing my teeth.
Never would I dream of going outdoors without my hair put up and make-up in place.

I am 79 and been grey since my 30's but white now. Always wear foundation, fill in eyebrows, swipe a bit of eye shadow on to get rid of the redness and wear mascara, even through have fewer and fewer eyelashes! Have never worn lipstick. Also I wash my baby-fine hair every day and wouldn't leave the house if I hadn't!

WOODMOUSE49 Fri 01-Nov-19 17:10:38

From when I started using makeup it has only been for my eyes. Never went out without it.

Hair colour has changed but 55 years later the eye makeup still goes on when I get up.

nanasam Fri 01-Nov-19 17:22:13

I envy you ladies who can wear makeup. I can't wear it every day. All I can wear with comfort is lipstick and blusher. I dye my eyebrows and I have white hair (in a funky style). If I'm going somewhere special I do put a full face on but after an hour or so my eyes are red and streaming and I can't wait to get the lot off. I've tried all the hypo-allergenic brands but it's always the same sad

HannahLoisLuke Fri 01-Nov-19 17:41:08

Every day, whether going out or staying in.

Nanna58 Fri 01-Nov-19 17:56:46

I am not one of those Gillian, I have always worn make up and cannot en ‘ visage’ ( ha ha ! ) a time when I won’t.???

Nanna58 Fri 01-Nov-19 17:57:47

Sorry giulia, spellcheck ruined your beautiful name.

Nanna58 Fri 01-Nov-19 17:59:16

PS also have scalp and body psoriasis( plus the oft attendant arthritis) so know how you feel.

TrendyNannie6 Fri 01-Nov-19 18:10:30

I love to wear makeup not too much though I think less is more, I have mine down to a fine art foundation mascara lipstick

crystaltipps Fri 01-Nov-19 18:21:21

I went to the Zandra Rhodes exhibition and noted how much black eyeliner and make up plus whacky hair colour she wears! Going to wear more colour.

NanKate Fri 01-Nov-19 18:42:02

The full slap for me. Love it. ?

Blondiescot Fri 01-Nov-19 18:44:06

I never wear it - as the saying goes, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. Good for those who do - but I don't see the point personally.

gillyknits Fri 01-Nov-19 19:21:16

I don’t leave the house without eyebrows. They are the frame of your face and , as mine are now white, they look non existent. I also use a little lipstick to brighten things up. Going grey or white can be very draining on the face. A little colour goes a long way.
