Uniform or wear soemthing different everyday?

I have been reading about the idea of taking away the decision about what to wear and just wearing the same thing everyday (like Steve Jobs etc). I cannot decide what I would like to wear everyday, and have come to the conclusion that it's more fun to wear a new outfit everyday, mixing up what I already have and wearing what hasn't seen the light of day for a while. I have been getting into a rut of just wearing jeans and a jumper. What works for you?

Having been in both camps, so to speak, I'd opt for the uniform!
Only drawback really is that it may not necessarily be to your taste and is usually made out of polyester! In fact with one lot of uniform, the blouses, though a quite nice colour of lilac, were quite see through so you either had to choose your bra carefully or, like I did, wear a t shirt vest underneath! In fact, in the summer it was more comfortable to do that because we had no air con!
Subsequent uniforms - there was a choice of tops and they were made out of a nice stretchy jersey (thanks Jeff Banks!) .
Added to the lack of hassle of not having to choose each day, you can claim tax back for laundering your uniform!

I used to stress so much about clothes but no more ! Now I travel a lot with a 10 kg suitcase so for summer, usually white & beige trousers and 6/7 sleeveless tops, two light jackets , lots of scarves, two pairs summer sandals . Winter is thermal underwear, black trousers , same tops, cardigan, v neck long jumper , few posh scarves, two jackets, one pair of shoes , two pairs boots. I can pack in 10 minutes. i do have a few clothes / shoes parked in different homes though. Lately I am beginning to think of settling down in one place lol. Maybe when I’m 70. Or God willing 80.

I work in a school and we have a dress code. I am due to retire next year and one of the things I look forward to most is being able to wear whatever I like every day. We are not allowed jeans or leggings, sandals, sleeveless tops or anything low-cut. They only brought in the 'no sandal' rule last summer and I had to buy a new pair of summer shoes that could be worn with bare feet as all my other closed fronted shoes are too tight in hot weather as my feet swell. I wasn't best pleased as I've worn sandals in summer for 6 years in the job and then they choose to change things in my last working year!

My ‘uniform’ during the week , looking after DGS and running him back and forth to nursery is like a time warp, jeans and a sweatshirt, exactly that same as I wore to look after his mother! In between her and him I had to wear smart for work, so this full circle is a nice change!?

I wear a different outfit everyday, so that all my clothes get worn and I would be bored wearing the same thing all the time. The colourful the better together with jewellery, make up, perfume, hair done, nails done All makes me feel better.

Lavalava is a rectangular cloth worn as a skirt, mainly by Polynesians, according to google.

I never wore a uniform for work and was quite put out when jeans and trainers were discouraged. I just got smarter, darker jeans and trainers and wore t shirts with sandals in summer and jumpers with boots in winter (same jeans).

Now that I'm retired, I like long dresses in summer and stretchy, loose yoga pants instead of jeans. No more sandals or heels, either, just fit flop shoes (a collection) and boots. I dislike tight clothing now, so I'm often in pyjamas in the house. I have several gilet-type tops so I don't have to wear a bra!

NotTooOld Sun 24-Nov-19 16:33:39

What is a lavalava, please?

I am a bit stuck in a rut. In winter it's jeggings and jumper or long sleeved t-shirt, in summer it's 3/4 length casual trousers and a t-shirt. I'd like to wear dresses but they make me look so frumpy. Problems arise when I have somewhere smart to go (not very often, fortunately) as jeggings don't seem appropriate.

I love to Sit down in mornings and have my cuppa knowing that since I retired I can take my time and not have to wear a gross looking uniform that we we were given to wear at work, as I real lover of clothes I get a sense of achievement knowing I’m going to like what I can now wear

I often wished as a teacher I had a uniform. Private school teachers sometimes wear their university gowns which hides what’s going on underneath! Some teachers wear inappropriate revealing summer clothes when they should know better. I never wear my teacher clothes at home I should try putting them together differently now I only work part time. I really could not cope with a limited capsule wardrobe of clothes or colours. Depressing!

I hated wearing the same clothes day-in-day-out when I was at school and vowed never again to wear the same clothes two days running. However since retiring I find myself choosing trousers (cropped in summer) every day, but in different colours and styles, with a variety of tops according to the weather. Skirts are for special occasions!

For my voluntary work I am clean and tidy but not smart, as I work mainly with clients who are struggling. Most days I need to change as soon as I get home if my clothes are smelly.

For my choirs I wear layers as it can get very hot, but now that it is cold outside, I need to pile the layers back on when I leave.

On days at home I wear much the same, long sleeved T shirt with blouse, cardigan etc. Some days I think it is time I dressed up a bit as I tend to be in a rut. I have a few dressy outfits but am more comfortable in trousers, navy or black usually. I can wear more comfy shoes with trousers than with a skirt or dress.
Comfort is key.

I've taken to wearing two long sleeved tee shirts with my jeans. I've bought several white ones and four or five coloured ones. They are all from Sainsbury's Tu range and I bought quite a few by using my nectar points. I usually layer a white one with a coloured one. My favourite is the pink one but there's a lovely green one too. Sometimes I wear the coloured one on top and sometimes reverse that. I've gone right off black lately.

Think uniforms look really smart and take away the decision when in a rush to get to work, of what to wear ! The only snag was when the local branch of Debenhams changed their uniform blouse to the same as that of my work place uniform ...was fun in Debenhams to be approached by customers looking for help ! We had to take a different colour jacket or cardi if we were shopping there after work !! Where I live now I am retired every working person seems to wear all black with a neck chain and a badge. They look so smart I am tempted to wear all black every day with a bright blouse ….whereas I probably look a complete scruff !

Confession time - I used to love shell suits!
Comfortable, colourful and somehow seemed to flatter my figure.
Unfortunately I heard they were a fire hazard.

I no longer work, but I try, not very successfully, to vary my clothing, as I feel DH and I are getting into a rut, wearing whatever comes first to hand.

Keeper1 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:05:06

If I could choose it would be pyjamas formal and informal ones oh and some glam ones for dinner parties or events. grin

Nanny41 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:04:03

I have worn uniforms all my life, School uniform then Nurses uniform, although I was very proud of my uniforms, now I am retired it is nice to chose what I want, and be who I am.

NotSpaghetti Sun 24-Nov-19 11:17:05

I have a personal uniform.
I’ve had it maybe five or six years and I love it.

I wear linen dresses/tunics summer and winter alike. I choose to wear whichever one is ironed!

In the winter I layer with long sleeved t-shirts and leggings or jeans and in the summer wear just the dresses /tunics - sometimes with cropped trousers.

Getting dressed is fantastically easy. Wish I’d discovered this way years ago!

GagaJo Sun 24-Nov-19 11:13:50

I have a 'uniform' of sorts for school (teacher). I have the same M&S dress in a range of colours. They're all wash and wear jersey and I can stretch and move comfortably in them.

I'm aware in comparison to the other teachers that my 'uniform' may make me a little odd, but I HATE trying to decide what to wear for work. I have a slight preference to the grey dress, which I wear for parents evenings etc, but nothing special or extra OTHER than my proper pearls.

So am I the only person still faithful to denim skirts for everyday? With navy or black thick tights in winter, bare legs in summer. I have 2 or 3 and find one 'lasts' a week assuming at least one day when something smarter is called for. Tops go two days.
