Can anyone advise what I should wear to an informal family wedding in Febtuary? The ceremomy will be in a city centre Registry office then we will walk to a nearby restauranr.

Some good suggestions there, NotSpaghetti smile

I have had a trawl about the websites, dangerous!!

SpringyChicken Wed 29-Jan-20 08:20:41

Coatigan, smart top, skirt and long boots?

Persistentdonor Wed 29-Jan-20 08:29:33

I don't suppose it will be any consolation Varian but I have the identical problem, twice this year.
Once in summer, then again at Christmas, so it looks like 2 outfits unavoidable.
Nearly 70 and very short but never slim.
I've been worrying about it for 12 months already!! sad

How classy is this? Simple outfit, but the statement necklace makes it into something special.

Sorry about the long URL, but I can't get the hyperlink to work!

I don't like the necklace at all. I really dislike chunky jewelry

Another idea is to look out for an Ann Balon 3 piece ( ebay?). They are very expensive new and can be dressy. They are often sold as "mother of the bride" outfits. Don't let this put you off though as they are assuming you will wear the 3 pieces together. They do a lot of lace and it is very stretchy (but not clingy as it is heavy).

You can wear the lacy jacket over almost any plain top and it will look lovely. I have worn the jacket of mine with trousers and long vest top numerous times. I've worn it with jeans in the summer! You can make it more formal by using the vest part of the 3 piece with the jacket too.

Good luck.

Obviously if you wear the whole outfit you will be overdressed but I love mine and I think that separately you can get lots of wear out of it.

If it is going to be very cold you can always wear thermals underneath what ever you are wearing. Remember Princess Diana always did that!!!! smile

We can all make suggestions and hope something appeals, however, I don't think Varian has given us an idea, what her taste or budget is.

At the end of the day, she is the one wearing the outfit and needs to feel comfortable with what she is wearing. There is nothing worse than going to a function and wishing you had worn something else. sad

Good luck with your search. ?

Masai clothes are gorgeous(pricey though) and it doesn’t matter about not being skinny slim or whatever. Look around for sales of Masai or Capri clothing. A dress with boots or coloured tights or smart trousers with a fancy tunic.

Eg

NotSpaghetti Wed 29-Jan-20 09:28:36

Maasai only go up to an 18/20. Not sure what size you are varian but they regularly don't fit me because the styles I like aren't big enough over the bust. ?

My daughter has several tunics dresses and tops from Gudrun Sjödén
www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-gb
Very expensive but do go up to large sizes. She has one item for her birthday and one for Christmas and has done this for a few years now.
She wears them dressed-up for weddings and "dressed down" for everyday.
They seem to be good quality.

Ha ha Marydoll yes, can't look!
I have had some great Chesca bargains though over the years including a smart-casual knitted coat which is like a super-cosy cardigan but so much more stylish.

"Made in Italy" do some great easy-to wear, but slighy quirky coats and cardigan type jackets too.

Seasalt do lovely comfortable dresses, one of theirs would get worn afterwards. If you buy a nice necklace to go with it then it would look lovely on the day. Lots of coats in the sales still, great reductions so that would be a sensible move even if you don't have to go anywhere smart very often.

Another idea -
Seasalt.

Sorry, x-post pernilla

Are you mother of the bride or groom, varian? which could come into the equation.

Ps has varian gone shopping?

Marydoll Wed 29-Jan-20 10:19:28

NotSpaghetti, I have a few Made in Italy pieces, bought here and in Italy.?

varian Wed 29-Jan-20 10:21:13

I sbould have explained I am the motber of the bride. One of my daughters is about to marry her partner of 25 years. Shortly after the wedding the happy couple and their children will be joining the brexit brain drain. They are moving to another EU country, possibly for good.

I'd long since given up looking at hats and picturing myself as the mother of that bride!

Marydoll Wed 29-Jan-20 10:27:47

I will be Mother of the bride in March. My outfit is not typical MOB, I don't like fussy clothes. ?

Callistemon Wed 29-Jan-20 10:28:29

I hope you find something lovely but that you can wear again.

I still have a hat from years ago when DD got married which has never been on my head since but I can't get rid of it!

Callistemon Wed 29-Jan-20 10:29:09

I like plain too.

MawB Wed 29-Jan-20 10:39:47

Definitely smart trousers (I bought Lands End velvet stretch trousers for DDs wedding) and a jacket/lightweight coat with an extra layer for the walk to the Reception.
Remember these pics will be with you for a lifetime. If you don’t want to shell out too much, check out eBay for coats/jackets.
I love a style challenge!

varian Wed 29-Jan-20 11:11:28

I don't think I've ever relished a style challenge. Thinking back over the years the garments I've liked best were probably things I saw when I was not looking for anything specific. If I try to visualise what I'm looking for I can never find it.

A friend made an appointment with a stylist from one of the big stores. They offered clothes that she wouldn’t have chosen herself but was very happy with the result. She said that there was no pressure to buy and no uncomfortable atmosphere when she said that she wanted to think it over.
