Can anyone advise what I should wear to an informal family wedding in Febtuary? The ceremomy will be in a city centre Registry office then we will walk to a nearby restauranr.

Are you mother of the bride or groom, varian? which could come into the equation.

Ps has varian gone shopping?

Sorry, x-post pernilla

Another idea -
Seasalt.

Seasalt do lovely comfortable dresses, one of theirs would get worn afterwards. If you buy a nice necklace to go with it then it would look lovely on the day. Lots of coats in the sales still, great reductions so that would be a sensible move even if you don't have to go anywhere smart very often.

Ha ha Marydoll yes, can't look!
I have had some great Chesca bargains though over the years including a smart-casual knitted coat which is like a super-cosy cardigan but so much more stylish.

"Made in Italy" do some great easy-to wear, but slighy quirky coats and cardigan type jackets too.

My daughter has several tunics dresses and tops from Gudrun Sjödén
www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-gb
Very expensive but do go up to large sizes. She has one item for her birthday and one for Christmas and has done this for a few years now.
She wears them dressed-up for weddings and "dressed down" for everyday.
They seem to be good quality.

Maasai only go up to an 18/20. Not sure what size you are varian but they regularly don't fit me because the styles I like aren't big enough over the bust. ?

Eg

Masai clothes are gorgeous(pricey though) and it doesn’t matter about not being skinny slim or whatever. Look around for sales of Masai or Capri clothing. A dress with boots or coloured tights or smart trousers with a fancy tunic.

We can all make suggestions and hope something appeals, however, I don't think Varian has given us an idea, what her taste or budget is.

At the end of the day, she is the one wearing the outfit and needs to feel comfortable with what she is wearing. There is nothing worse than going to a function and wishing you had worn something else. sad

Good luck with your search. ?

If it is going to be very cold you can always wear thermals underneath what ever you are wearing. Remember Princess Diana always did that!!!! smile

Another idea is to look out for an Ann Balon 3 piece ( ebay?). They are very expensive new and can be dressy. They are often sold as "mother of the bride" outfits. Don't let this put you off though as they are assuming you will wear the 3 pieces together. They do a lot of lace and it is very stretchy (but not clingy as it is heavy).

You can wear the lacy jacket over almost any plain top and it will look lovely. I have worn the jacket of mine with trousers and long vest top numerous times. I've worn it with jeans in the summer! You can make it more formal by using the vest part of the 3 piece with the jacket too.

Good luck.

Obviously if you wear the whole outfit you will be overdressed but I love mine and I think that separately you can get lots of wear out of it.

I don't like the necklace at all. I really dislike chunky jewelry

Marydoll Wed 29-Jan-20 08:36:46

How classy is this? Simple outfit, but the statement necklace makes it into something special.

Sorry about the long URL, but I can't get the hyperlink to work!

I don't suppose it will be any consolation Varian but I have the identical problem, twice this year.
Once in summer, then again at Christmas, so it looks like 2 outfits unavoidable.
Nearly 70 and very short but never slim.
I've been worrying about it for 12 months already!! sad

Coatigan, smart top, skirt and long boots?

Marydoll Wed 29-Jan-20 08:20:29

Some good suggestions there, NotSpaghetti smile

I have had a trawl about the websites, dangerous!!

Please let me encourage you to look at Chesca. They do have outfits for all sorts of shapes. If you can get to a shop that sells them you will see what I mean. Do you have a House of Fraser still?

Otherwise, you could try "Made in Italy" clothes. These are generally sold by independent retailers but can be found online. They have some easy-fit plain tunics which can soon be jazzed up with a lovely scarf or chunky necklace. This company sells them:

Varian, I trawled through Pinterest to look for ideas.
What I did notice that, even at an informal wedding, guests were still smartly dressed.
Callistemon has some good suggestions.

varian Wed 29-Jan-20 05:12:18

I have been looking at various clothing websites but the clothes are all being modelled by women who look nothing like me - they are all tall, slim, pretty and at least fifty years younger than I am so it does not follow that what looks good on them will work for me.

Callistemon Tue 28-Jan-20 22:46:31

White Stuff has a sale.
I rarely wear dresses (well, never if I can help it) but if I was going to a wedding I would try on a dress with thick coloured tights and ankle boots and a warm coat/jacket.
Or slim velvet trousers with a nice long top?

Dollymac Tue 28-Jan-20 21:58:30

As it is a wedding, albeit informal, I would still want to look and feel 'smart'
If you usually wear trousers, then, you would probably get the most wear out of them afterwards
I would suggest a pair of woollen, wide leg trousers, a co-ordinating knee length coatigan, with a pink or peach coloured scarf to lift your complexion. A lace blouse, as it will probably be warm in the restaurant after your walk and nice big handbag and ankle boots
Enjoy your day, bet you will look lovely whatever you choose

Patsy70 Tue 28-Jan-20 21:35:46

Go for comfort, warmth, long lines, co-ordinates, colours that suit you (not your OH!) Try Phase Eight, Hobbs, John Lewis! Let us know what you've chosen. I've got 2 weddings this year in April and September, so intend buying one outfit for both! Enjoy the shopping and take a friend whose judgment you trust!

NotSpaghetti Tue 28-Jan-20 15:57:00

Chesca still has a sale on at the moment.
Have a look at House of Fraser as they sell quite a range.
