Demi permanent hair dye over permanent?

Hi, can anyone tell me if you can use a demi permanent colour over permanent hair dye please? I had my hair coloured at a salon before Christmas, I had initially wanted a demi as I only have a smallish amount of grey about 10% and didn't want the hassle of getting roots done. I stupidly let myself get talked into a permanent as I was getting married and wanted it to look nice. The hairdresser said a demi would only blend in grey, which I was fine with. Anyway now I have really noticable roots as I am dark and had a very vibrant violet toned red put on it. I went back for consultation and hairdresser said it wouldn't cover root line if I put demi over the top. I'm looking now to go a more natural colour so re growth isn't so noticeable. Thing is if I go for another permanent colour I'm tied to regular salon visits. Added photos but it doesn't really show how bright the colour is as it's dark day

The hairdresser would say that (to gain a regular customer) wouldn't they? A semi-permanent should be fine while you grow it out. Choose something closer to your natural colour. It will gradually fade and wash out.

Your other option is to have a permanent colour to match your roots, but the regrowth of grey may be more visible.

Have you thought about trying one of those colour strippers? They do really work. I've used them a couple of times because I can't get the semi-permanent dye I used to use. I've stripped the old dye off and put the new dye on. It won't take off ALL the old dye but would take off enough to let you then put a demi on.

I would advise using a 50/50 mix of vosene and fairy liquid, it will make your hair dry but I’ve found it great for pulling out colour. Stripping your hair with more chemicals would probably thin it.

What you then put on it depends on what outcome you are looking for, do you want to keep it the violet tone or are you looking for a more natural tone?
