Anyone still going to hairdresser?

I cancelled my appointment because I'm afraid of putting my head back to be washed giving the opportunity for germs to go onto my face from hairdresser above me. My area of the UK has a low incidence of C19 and I am fit and well albeit self distancing and staying at home unless absolutely necessary to venture out. Have other Grans been keeping hair appts? My hair is driving me mad and long overdue for a cut and blow so I would welcome yr kind thoughts or experiences?

You keep drip feeding raf so don’t blame others for the results of that behaviour. You said you worked with vulnerable people then later on you say not face to face. You are also like many people muddling up self isolation and social distancing as well as not appearing to realise that everyone is supposed to be doing their best to practice social distancing.

For Gods sake, I do not have to avoid them, nail bars are open, hairdressers are open. I have not been to them, I have not hade take away coffes, I have gone over and above with hygiene. Yes I do work with vunerable people but over the telephone. I have seen no one face to face since the hairdresser ,a friend came to my home.
I work at least 5 feet away from ny colleagues so shame on you for some of the things you said to me. So shame on you for jumping to conclusions. The shame is on you I have sone nothing wrong.

You ask what we are doing, rafichagran.

We’re not seeing our friends.
We’re not seeing our children and grandchildren.
I have an 8-week old granddaughter who I’ve seen a few times since she was born and I have no idea when I’ll see her again.
Some of us have had to make the difficult decision to stop providing childcare for GCs, knowing what difficulty this will cause for working parents.

We are not doing this, and making these sacrifices, just for our own good or our partners’ good.

We’re doing it because it will reduce the spread of the disease, prevent us from taking up precious facilities in the NHS, and reduce the workload for NHS staff, and because it’s the right thing to do.

I'm due a haircut and was wondering if I was overreacting to think of not going, but clearly not.

Desdemona Sat 21-Mar-20 22:45:04

I won't be going. Great hair is no good if you are dead.

mcem Sat 21-Mar-20 22:42:31

Apart from avoiding the vulnerable people you're being paid to care for. Shame on you!

Thank you NfkDumpling. Had a bit of a blip this week, with a cough that my daughter had last week. Daughter was frantic, taking my temperature every hour. All gone now. Back to playing with GS and revelling in him.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 22:35:00

I have asked for my posts to be deleted due to the venom on this thread. I am neither ignorant or irresponsible. I have done everything in my power to protect myself and others.
I really resent the way some of you are speaking about me. I have not gone to a salon even though they are open. Some of you are ignorant and are only seeing what you want to see. Smug, I think it describes some of you. I am out of here, knowing I am healthy and will be in work helping people. What are you people doing, nothing I suppose.
I would also add that in my town coffee shops are open serving take aways and people are in there certainly not social distancing I have not done that. I have stated I have done this in my own home 3 days before I am due in work. You are a bunch of bullies, and I can not be bothered with you. I have taken all precautions.

NfkDumpling Sat 21-Mar-20 22:29:08

Pleased you got home safely GagaJo

NfkDumpling Sat 21-Mar-20 22:27:55

I’ve had really, really short hair for a very long time. Ever since the hairdresser trimmed off my P J Proby pony tail. It was quite wavy then. I’ve already had four weeks growth. I wonder what it’ll be like in 12 weeks time!

NfkDumpling Sat 21-Mar-20 22:25:13

Rafichagran. Everyone should be social distancing! In supermarkets, everywhere.

Just because some people don’t, doesn’t mean that you don’t have to. It’s like saying some drivers tailgate so everyone can. Perhaps if you’d set an example and left a slightly bigger space between your trolley and the person in front others may have followed. It’s easy to forget.

Haven’t you noticed that young fit interviewers on tv and now using microphones on selfie sticks to maintain distance? That wherever possible even young fit people are working from home? It’s not just the over 70’s who catch this. Anyone can. And anyone can pass it on.

GagaJo Sat 21-Mar-20 22:16:33

rafichagran, yes, I did fly back home. I took every precaution possible during that process BUT I did fly.

I sat on the floor in the airport, away from others while waiting for my flight (I really did this). I paid for the most expensive seat on the plane, so I would be away from others as much as possible. I wore a mask. I used wipes on the armrests and shared the wipes with the people next to me, who were also wearing masks. I washed my hands at least 4 times while I was on the plane and once when I got off. After that, I used sanitizer. I ate and drank nothing on the plane. I was the first off, because I was sitting by the exit.

On the way home on the metro, I got into an empty carriage and sat with my mask on. I ONLY took my mask off when I got into my car.

Since then, I have been around NO ONE other than my 2 family members. No shopping. No seeing my partner who lives in the same city. No talking to neighbours.

Yes, I was selfish for flying. But I wanted to be with my family. Not quite the same as having a hair do.

Appalled that anyone responsible for the care of vulnerable people could be so irresponsible, smug and self-indulgent.
Are your employers aware of your behaviour?

janeainsworth Sat 21-Mar-20 22:03:39

Rafichagran ‘Vulnerable’ in the context of Covid-19 means that if you get the virus, you are much more likely to get severe symptoms and need hospitalisation.

Not being in a vulnerable group does not mean you are less likely to contract the virus, or to pass it on to others.

You say you are a key worker, working with vulnerable people.

I’m astounded by your ignorance and irresponsibility.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 21:50:52

I had my hair done at home.
I wash my hands they are raw.
My house is clean
My hairdresser is clean and not breathing over me.
I washed my own hair
I blow dried my own hair
My age group has not been asked to self isolate and the hairdresser is a younger person
Neither of us has a temperature, cough or respitiry symptoms which is what the government has told people to self isolate for.
No I would not go to a salon even though they are open and people are in them.
I understand some people are scared but some are hypocrites, one who commented flew home from abroad, she could easily have bought it back. If I am I'll I will self isolate, but I am not.

janeainsworth Sat 21-Mar-20 21:33:00

The thing about having your hair done by someone is that you are in very close personal contact with them.
‘Sterilising’ everything in sight isn’t going to offer any protection if an asymptomatic infected person is breathing all over you.

rafichagran Sat 21-Mar-20 21:26:20

Oh for goodness sake Wellbeck I am not in the vunerable group, we have taken all precautions.
I went to the supermarket today, no one was social distancing, there were groups of people talking, I am sure some of them are key workers, as there were so many people in there, as well as the ones walking on the street. I dont have to self isolate I am not in the vunerable group, I have no symptoms and am healthy.
Would I go to a hairdressing salon, no I would not, but inviting one in my home where all precautions are taken is different.
It's the over 70's who are advised to self isolate.
I also noted your sarcasm about my "ever so clean home" maybe you dont have high standards and that is why you are worried. I am not and my conscience is clear.

welbeck Sat 21-Mar-20 20:56:48

i am rather shocked by rafi, who says she is still going to work, and works with vulnerable people.
so that is a risk to others who have no say in it.
most of us are already self-isolating.
you seem to glide over the risk of catching and passing on the virus unseen, ie from someone exhibiting no symptoms.
how do you know your ever-so-clean hairdresser was not incubating it, and that you in your ever-so clean house did not pick it up, to pass on to the vulnerable people you are still working with.

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 21-Mar-20 20:41:18

I did have appointment last week, but chickened out, 'cause she would not be able to do much without coming close - by the time we can safely go out again, I'll probably resemble a grey haired cave woman!! But who but DH is going to see it? And who knows, I might like it!

welbeck Sat 21-Mar-20 20:31:55

someone on MN suggested we all sport a boris special hair style, ie nip at it occasionally with nail scissors, during this crisis, as a kind of badge of honour, of commitment to getting our priorities right.
its a thought.
for those who think they have to go for wash etc, could you sit the other way round at the basin, ie face down rather than up.
but really, safer not to go at all. hairdryers create aerosol effect, perfect for spraying virus around, from asymptomatic carrier such as hairdresser who meets so many people.

WishIwasyounger Sat 21-Mar-20 20:19:25

I love going to my hairdresser, but reluctantly I've cancelled my appointments and decided to grow my hair longer. I used to have longer hair years ago, but had it cut shorter to please my ex. Thinking back I can''t understand why I pandered to his likes and dislikes, but that's another story.

grannyqueenie Sat 21-Mar-20 19:53:02

Resigned to cancelling my next air appointment, at least I won’t really be seeing anyone I know. If I’m tempted to take the scissors to it I’ll get out the photos of the children when they were small, I wasn’t any good at diy haircuts then! Funnily enough there is someone who looks just like that in the right hand top corner of my face time screen too merlot

Luckygirl Sat 21-Mar-20 19:42:13

After Easter is what I call optimistic in the extreme!!!!

Treebee Sat 21-Mar-20 19:39:01

The salon has cancelled my appointment which was for next Tuesday and rescheduled for after Easter. Makes sense. I’ll have to look out my hair clips or I won’t be able to see!
