Brands we have loved and lost?

Have I missed something? Is M&S not going to be selling clothes anymore? I agree with posters who say that they have strayed too far from their good quality, reasonably priced classics and basics. Admittedly some of their clothes are pretty awful. But I really would miss underwear, tights, socks and their cashmere jumpers.

I miss Gamages in Holborn. Every Christmas my mother would take my sister and I to see Father Christmas, there. Used to get a good present, not rubbish. Nostalgia, as this store went in the early 70s.

Principles, C&A, Etam, Richards, still have clothes from these stores, fitted well and still look good even after lots of washes. No longer have a Evans store locally. Woolworths bought everything here, needles, cottons, teatowels, records, sweets, gardening stuff. still use items such as plates, pie dishes bought bit at time for bottom drawer before married. Woolco. lots of independent shops bought nets, spare bags for hoover, fuses etc and cobbler who was whizz repairing shoes, handbags. He retired and chain ones are not as good or as helpful.

Who would ever have believed that M&S clothing would go to the wall? I started to buy there in 1956 – lovely fine Botany Wool twinsets and good quality skirts. I am still wearing night-dresses purchased in 1985, and still buying, when available, its cashmere sweaters, expensive yes but lasting quality that does not bubble. When classically ideal Weekenders went to the wall, I remember comments being made about M&S being next, and who trying to attract younger buyers in danger of losing sight of its core customers. It has taken time but finally arrived at its demise. After progressive seasons of dreadful quality material, colours and poor design, I began to suspect it employed colour-blind designers suffering server depression.

How well I remember the real Jaeger Company - such beautiful classic clothes.

Lovely Dickens & Jones AnniFrance where I took my elderly mother and could find comfortable seats throughout the store for her to rest in.

Liberty's wonderful Aladdin's Cave of fabrics and afternoon tea.

Such glorious days that have disappeared never to arise again.

I buy Kerrygold weekly from Sainsbury's - if you are having problems it might be an idea to email Kerrygold and ask for local suppliers.

I could not do without it - not least because it is one of the few (if not the only) "spreadable" butter which does NOT contain palm oil!

Am just home from buying paint, no problem, but i thought when i was passing a very large Tesco store i would pop in and get Schwartz sachets of spice mix called Mediteranean Roast Veg. Assistants pointed me to 2 (why not have it all in one area?) places where it was displayed. Floor to top of the racks in both places but none of what i wanted. : -( It really is lovely to make veg lasagne with. Am off to check if it's discontinued, and may write to Schwartz to ask what the mix was. I've made veg lasagne using my own made up ideas but none taste like the packet mix.

Maw did you know that Edinburgh Wool Shops (often found in Garden Centres) sell Country Casuals?

Coast and my favourite - Karen Millen (though both still available online). Kaliko and Principles (Principles is available in Debenhams, but nowhere near as good as it was when they had their own shops). Used to love Wallis, but in recent years it's changed, now lots of polyester and baggy tops. M and S has completely lost it's way over the years for ladies wear; too many manmade fibres and shapeless tops and dresses and their trousers are now very baggy on the hips and look like jodpurs! And all you tall ladies can source longer length swimming costumes - but there's no such thing as shorter length ones for us small people!

Waitrose sell Kerrygold butter. Our Waitrose has just closed, last week, and although I know the brand hasn’t gone, and they are just closing some of their stores, I will miss my local Waitrose a lot.

I recommend Boden for swimwear for a taller lady. Expensive but fabulously flattering

Jaeger. The label still exists, but the clothes are nothing like the original clothes.

I used to like CC too but now it is part of EWM the style and quality just isn't there. The same goes for the resurrected East label.

I miss Coty L'Aimant cream perfume that came in a little black bottle.

Granless Tesco sell Kerrygold butter well they do in Hertfordshire.

You can still get Charlie perfume. I miss Revlon Intimate perfume, I bought some recently named as such and it bore no resemblance to the original from years ago. Charlie is still Charlie though, my mum has some.

The Sweater Shop is the one I miss. I have knitwear from there that I bought in the 80s and it is still in excellent, virtually pristine condition.
