Confused dressing

In the Post Office queue this morning I had plenty of time to “people watch” - sadly a favourite occupation! And to look at what they were wearing.

Three in front of me, at the counter, anorak, calf length denim skirt. flip flops, two in front of me, a very chic looking dark haired girl, maybe Asian, a short plum tweed skirt, plum sweater black, opaque tight and heels, the man in front of me, baggy shorts, socks, trainers, rolled up shirt sleeves, I was in a short sleeved shirt, jeans and sandals , the girl behind me, in ripped jeans and furry Ugg boots (?) , behind her a young woman in a little black dress, opaque tights, ballet flats.
We presumably had all dressed for the same temperature today (around 27) but perceived it differently?

My husband says I embarrass him in the winter because whatever the weather,my only concession to the cold is a long sleeved cardigan.

I remember going on holiday to Tunisia in April, we were in summer clothes as it was as warm as our summer, but seeing some locals riding their camels, muffled up well in thick duffle-type coats (the natives, not the camels).

The postman told OH that they wear shorts partly because being bitten on the back of the leg by dogs is an occupational hazard. The fabric from trousers getting in to the wounds can cause problems with healing and infections.

My Australian cousin shared a wonderful pair of photos on Facebook showing 20° C in Australia and the UK. The British were in swimwear on the beach, the Aussies were dressed as if it were snowing.

I m still in knee length shorts and strapph top with a zipper or cardi if it cools down Hope to stay like it till the end of the month
sidapop how funny to have a date in your head instead of feeling it

Reminds. me of the time in Mallorca when my mother and I in shorts and t-shirts walked along the beach in November and saw the auld folks trip All the women wore thick coats boots and woolly headsquares

Just spotted a very tall slim person with long sleeved flowery blouse, hot pants ( the real ones by the look of things) black tights, long boots, shoulder bag.
Long grey hair and a very long beard.
They must have been roasting.

Vis-a-vis the postmen and women. My post man told me their work issue long trousers are heavy and uncomfortable, especially so when wet. He’d rather his bare legs got wet and cold rather than his trousers, and they dried quicker when he got out of the weather.

My partner wears t.shirts and jeans all round the year. No matter what the weather. If it’s chilly, he might slip on a jumper as well. Such simplicity.

My problem is too much choice, so I nearly always end up wearing the wrong attire.

Here in France at a certain date in September which is variable everyone dons winter clothing regardless of the temperature. We are currently in the middle of a heat wave but it won't be long before coats, hats jumpers etc are being worn. It's often very pleasant until the end of October but I often feel out of place wearing sandals and lightweight clothing.

When I was able to go shopping in the Norfolk town I used to sit on my scooter eating my sandwich. On a lovely summers day most people were wearing jeans and jackets of nondescript colours. I only saw one skirt and a young pregnant woman showing her bare bump wearing furry boots

How fashions have changed over the years. I remember the days when women all wore pretty dresses on warm days as I still do.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 16-Sept-20 16:23:14

It's been extremely hot here in Devon today, so I'm keeping cool in a sun dress. No doubt there's people who are chilly mortals who will go into warmer stuff just because it's September. I'm making up for the dire August weather!

Ugg boots ?

My gast was absolutely flabbered this morning when I went to our local high street to buy fresh bread. Standing next to his car, texting, was a business man in shirt, jacket and tie. It was only when I went to the other side of the road I saw he was wearing 3/4 length trousers - as well as "proper" shoes and socks!

The sheer incongruity, plus his white, spindly legs were the only things that stopped me from laughing out loud.

Lilyflower Wed 16-Sept-20 13:34:27

In these odd days where the weather changes frequently - so do I. I went from jeans, top and cardi, to a skirt and teeshirt, then shorts and, finally, back to jeans one day last week.

If I go out in spring or autumn I pack a bag with a skirt in if I am wearing jeans and, if it's warmish, I wear the skirt and pack the jeans.

I must be some shade of bonkers. I iron everything too.

MissAdventure I also read it was a competition, a few winters ago, to see who was the bravest postman and who could endure the cold months wearing shorts. However, it seems the bonus discovery was that legs dry far quicker than trousers, and in the wet and dismal weather the postmen are more comfortable in shorts rather than having flapping wet trousers for most of the day.

The dressing thing has always amused me too - on a spring day you can see people muffled to the eyebrows in hats and scarves etc. and others in t shirts. Different personal thermostats, presumably.

Lilyflower Wed 16-Sept-20 13:30:22

We used to laugh when the DD was at Exeter University. What ever the time of year it was, even a deep and crispy January, someone would be in shorts and flipflops.

Kim19 Wed 16-Sept-20 13:12:49

Funny thing I've noticed, in my family, once the men don shorts they seem unable to revert to something warmer when necessary. No flexibility whatsoever. Can't understand it but when mentioned they look at me in a perplexed way. Who cares? Foolishly, it sometimes makes me feel a bit cold looking at them but I keep well wrapped up most of the time.

lemongrove Wed 16-Sept-20 13:08:57

I was thinking much the same as you Maw when out and about last week. There has never been a time really when clothes and manner of dressing has been so diverse.
In the past, poor and wealthy dressed in the same manner, the poor wearing drab colours and cheap material, the wealthy wearing silk, satin, velvet in bright colours and with expensive jewellery etc.You could tell at a glance the station in life of a person.....not so now! The man in the queue in front wearing old shorts and a polo shirt could be living in a million pound house, and the dressed up to the nines young
woman could be in massive debt living from week to week.

Jillybird

Jeeezzz... MawB I'm so impressed you can remember what everyone was wearing after you got home!

I was in the queue for a long time with nothing to distract me!

Ot was quite cool here in the Welsh Marches yesterday morning so anyone leaving home first thing would've dressed for that. When I picked my grandson up from school at 3, I was wearing a sleeveless dress and flip flops....he was wearing shorts, t shirt, sweat shirt & a fleece!!

Tweedle24 Wed 16-Sept-20 11:44:03

I find this time of year difficult if I go out early in the morning. I am a cold mortal so need warm clothes before the day warms up. Then I am stuck on a hot day in cardigan, Shoes and popsox or socks while everyone else is in sandals and bare arms.

Alioop Wed 16-Sept-20 11:01:22

The young men in my town seem to have taken to wearing shorts 12 months of the year. I actually think it's to show off tattoos on their legs! It's silly in January when the legs are still out, but accompanied by a thick fleece, hat& scarf. Nuts!

Greeneyedgirl Wed 16-Sept-20 10:53:27

Aren’t human beings brilliant in their diversity? Hurrah I say.
