Has anyone cut their own hair during lockdown and what sort of result did u get. I havent had a haircut since last summer and my hair looks thick on the ends ive trimmed my fringe thats all

Theoddbird Sat 13-Feb-21 12:07:39

I just tie a scarf round my head 1940s style.

Its been a year for me. I do my fringe (I thought about growing it out but got cold feet). I had a mid length bob before, that I wanted longer anyway but my hairdressers idea of "just tidying up the ends" was always rather more than mine, so I am happy it has grown.

And weirdly my natural waves have reappeared so I am busy "cultivating" a messy wavy bob! Thought about buying some old fashioned hair rollers to help it along; but the large Boots I go to for my prescriptions didnt have any.

DH cut the front and sides of his hair the other day, then insisted that I did the back.

As I cannot focus my left eye properly at the moment that was a rather hairy, oops sorry, scary job!

We survived, and although I say it myself as shouldn't, his hair looks okay.

Mine is waist long, so it looks after itself, lockdown or not.

Thanks Nanna - I'll take your advice.
I might have a go when it's still wet from washing. Not the cut ponytail though.

Nanna29 Fri 12-Feb-21 13:48:57

Fennel dont do that it will make ur hair short at the front and long at the back.

I made this post to swap tips etc not to upset anyone. Hope everyone is doing OK in these very hard times

Fennel Thu 11-Feb-21 17:10:05

I was going to ask about this too. Last cut by my hairdresser during the last break in lockdown - it's now long enough to make a ponytail.
I've got some sharp scissors and can cut my fringe but due to arthritic shoulders can't do the back.
What would be the result if I made the ponytail, brought it round to the front and chopped it off? Would it be curved or straight?
Husband has cut my hair in the past but says he wouldn't know where to start now as it's such a bush.
He's gone into skinhead mode.

I had mine ‘chopped’ last summer, about 4’’ off, including a fringe cut in and a tidy before the second lockdown. It’s now a mop, the fringe is verging on annoying, but I don’t really mind. I wouldn’t event attempt a trim, certainly not the fringe, I’m very short sighted, with glasses off it would be a disaster. No one to see it apart from DH, he clippers his and not coming near mine!

My hair is shoulder length and fairly thick. A few weeks into the first lockdown last year, five or six months after my last haircut, I looked in the bathroom mirror and just had an overwhelming urge to chop off a couple of inches. The nearest sharp scissors were a pair of pinking shears so having sectioned my hair into four pieces with hair elastic I lopped a chunk off each quarter.

It actually didn’t look too bad at all for the next few months till I managed to get an appointment with my hairdresser and to her credit she managed not to snigger at my attempt and tidied it up nicely.

I’m resisting the temptation to do it again. grin

I think the key is once you get a haircut, or before it gets too out of control, is to “give it a go” in small steps. I think at our age
(grans) we’ve watched our hairdressers give us enough haircuts over the years to give it a try, especially if your one of those ones like me who keeps getting the same cut, or goes back to the same cut time and again. I use a full length mirror, as I think it’s best to do it standing, and try and follow the “hold up sections of hair and snip across taking small cuts off at a time all over. I then do it again and snip into it downwards like you see them do, pretending I’m a professional. I give it a quick brush and if I feel I need a bit more if I repeat the process. I think it’s best to just dampen hair ever so slightly, hardly at all before cutting and then wash your hair . I’ve been amazed by how well it’s turned out.... in fact on some occasions I’ve preferred it to the salon... would you believe!! as for the back.... I just hold the scissors against the back of my neck ( for short hair) and just cut across, and maybe snip from the side view for the back...ALWAYS looks better than before I started. I think I’ve reached that age of “try it” surely no once would cut till they were bald... lovely trim and tidy.

My short pixie needs maintenance. With the first lock down I cut it and the hairdresser said that I hadn't made too bad a job of it.
It's really lost shape as I stupidly cut the fringe. It's a bit of a disaster and I'm in two minds as to whether to cut it again. I put up with it, after all it's trivial compared to your problems Kate and I sympathise as hair is central to our feelings of self-esteem and confidence.

My hair clinic has now been given medical exemption due to the effect on mental health of hair loss. They were closed prior to obtaining this. However, I was too afraid to go to my last appointment due to Covid figures going up and me being over 70. I have now had my vaccine and will go when I can get in. I didn't mean to make anyone feel bad. Of course you all want your hair sorted.
Prior to this happening to me, I wouldn't have given a thought to anyone with hair loss.

Tangerine Thu 11-Feb-21 15:38:28

Kate1949 - I am sorry to hear about your hair system not being able to be serviced.

Yes, you are right that we should be careful what we moan about but I guess it is how people are. You have brought me up short and it made me think.

The sides and back of my hair are the same length so am just letting them grow and I am able to cut my fringe fairly easily.

It must be harder for people with complex hairstyles.

Riverwalk Thu 11-Feb-21 15:34:13

Kate I'm surprised that your hair system is not available, as it's for a medical condition, along the lines of podiatry, dentistry, etc., not life-threatening but conducive to general health.

Kate1949 Thu 11-Feb-21 15:12:47

Sorry to hear that Ellet Sending good wishes to you. I agree. Be careful what you moan about. I have alopecia totalis (no hair). The pandemic has made it extremely difficult to get my hair system serviced. I am in a complete mess. So much on TV and elsewhere about help with your hair during lockdown.
I find it quite distressing but I do realise I am in the minority and of course people want their hair to look nice.

Ellet Thu 11-Feb-21 15:01:31

I have cut mine several times, the back doesn’t get much attention but as long as the top and sides are neat it’s okay. I have discovered that I’m pretty good cutting my husbands hair too. My cousin has never looked so good since her husband started to cut her hair. Makes a much better job than her normal hairdresser.
Be careful what you moan about though. I started chemo two weeks ago and am now waiting for all my hair to fall out. Problem solved.

Grannybags Thu 11-Feb-21 14:59:25

My hair is short (pixie-ish) and I cut what I can reach at the front and trust my husband to do the back.

Used to go to the hairdressers every 4-5 weeks but haven't been for over a year now!

Callistemon Thu 11-Feb-21 14:54:21

I haven't had it cut for almost a year, apart from chopping the fringe and the bottom (badly), but I doubt that it's more than 6" long yet.

Judy54 Thu 11-Feb-21 14:50:46

Same as BigBerthal thick curly hair that grow quickly so no I have not cut it nor would I attempt to. The easiest way for me to style it is to let it dry naturally (takes ages) and then even out the curl into soft waves with a heated brush. Works quite well for me.

Redhead56 Thu 11-Feb-21 14:13:47

Mine looks a mess it was naturally quite curly but since lock down it’s just limp and flat. I had it cut when the hairdressers opened up again. I don’t know what was on the hairdressers mind she just hacked at it. I have been going there for a few years it’s been cut fine. I swore I wouldn’t go there again so have been trimming it myself. I don’t like dyeing my hair I used to put a copper shampoo on it. Since lock down I haven’t bothered now I look like a silver vixen. When lock down ends I shall decide what to do with it.

Puzzler61 Thu 11-Feb-21 14:09:00

I can cut the front but the back really needs shaping.
I’m afraid to start in case I can’t do a decent job. My hair seems to naturally sweep towards one side at the back and does it’s own thing. Trouble is it’s not the thing I want it to do (and it’s bushy). ✂️ ??‍?

BigBertha1 Thu 11-Feb-21 14:02:40

No I haven't cut it- wouldnt know where to start as its thick, curly and grows fast. I have coloured it thought to cover up the white roots - missed several bits but its better than it was.

glammanana Thu 11-Feb-21 13:42:14

I can trim my fringe myself and make a not too bad result but nothing compares to going to the hairdressers and being pampered for a couple of hours does it?

The length of mine needs a good 3/4 inches off so I cannot attempt that myself it is boardering on waist length now so seeing the back is impossible.

My hairdresser sadly will not be reopening due to 3 lockdowns it took me a long time to find her so I will have to start looking again soon.

M0nica Thu 11-Feb-21 13:40:03

What is a haircut?

timetogo2016 Thu 11-Feb-21 13:38:33

I cut mine when it was wet over the bath i cut about 4 inches off
It will do for now.
Dh didn`t notice so must be ok.

Nanna29 Thu 11-Feb-21 13:25:18

Lol I dont think so
