Chemo hats instead of wigs for thinning hair

After becoming more and more disheartened by bits of my scalp showing through my horrible thin hair I’ve taken the plunge and bought a wig online. I can’t wear it yet because it looks too thick and bulky on me so I’m awaiting my appointment in April with a wig cutter. I hope it will look good once it’s been thinned and cut.
I’m also hoping I won’t find it too scratchy and hot, and wondering what’s the answer if I do. So I’m thinking about getting some chemo hats as well. This kind of thing: www.simplywigs.co.uk/headwear/
Do any gransnetters with thinning hair, not necessarily because of chemotherapy, wear these? I think I’d feel self-conscious going out in one, and especially wearing one at any indoor events. I don’t seem to see anybody wearing these when I’m out and about. The only person I can recall wearing one was having chemotherapy. Possibly I’d feel reassured if I knew others wear them when they’re out...

Those in your link are just hats - a bit more coverage than most hats, but the kind of turban that was very popular in the past, and is still attracive on anyone, not just people having chemo. If I were you I would go for it, or even buy a turban or two from another source - they might be cheaper if not so specialised.

Those prices are a rip off, look on Amazon or ebay.
That’s why I went to a wig salon for my wig, so I could get exactly what suited me.

I’d wear the wig at home to get used to it. I find everything itchy, clothes, labels etc. I did have a wig thinned out at my hairdressers and to be honest they made a mess of it but it was a synthetic one and I don’t think they’re meant to be trimmed. I’ve bought a few of those hair bands recently and when it’s cold I wear hats.

Gosh though, some of them are really striking aren’t they!

Some of them look just like long scarves wrapped round the head - I do that in the Summer to protect my hair from the sun, and I am not losing my hair.

I also wear sun hats - having burnt my scalp badly once I now take care once the sun is out. I used to feel very self conscious in them, but once I got used to them it got easier. At least scarves/turbans won't blow off in the wind.

The place I bought my wig from actually asked me if I would like them to cut it for me so they can be styled. I got a hand made job with the hairs put in individually so of course that made it expensive but it did not have the shiny look of some wigs.
You still have some hair so could you have some showing at the front and/or back - that way you might feel happier you are making a fashion statement. Those turbans are very nice and stylish - some I had were nice and lightweight.

MerylStreep A few years ago when I previously thought about wigs I went to a wig salon. All the wigs I tried looked just as 'big' on me as this online one, which is why I gave up at that point. I decided to go online because I could browse at leisure without feeling pressured.
MayBee70 It's a shame your hairdresser spoiled your wig. Apparently not all hairdressers know how to cut wigs. (And yes, synthetic ones are able to be cut.)
Amberone I too wear sun hats in summer. And woolly hats in winter. It's the in-between seasons or when going to indoor events that I'm not sure about.

I just got a couple of bamboo jersey stocking caps. They’re light and cool. I didn’t lose all my hair so the hats were fine for me.

Blossoming Yes bamboo jersey is cool. Did you wear the caps to go out and about?

Beanies are very trendy!

Granny3Rose yes I did. I still wear them now to stop my hair blowing about when it’s windy ?

You can roll them up to make a brim, pin a brooch to them, or just wear them as is. ?

I’d looked at a lot on a FaceTime meeting. Then I went to the shop. I had all the time I wanted as it was done in lockdown last summer. By appointment only.

One of my friends has always had very thin hair and now has hardly any left. She has a nice wig she wears if she is going anywhere special but if we are just popping out for coffee she wears one of the chemo hats and always looks very smart.

I rather liked some of those turbans. Very stylish. I would certainly wear them but probably shop around as they are expensive for what you get.
