Where can I shop for clothes? Help!!

I finally found a really nice dress for dd’s wedding online at Poetry. I didn’t want anything typically ‘mother of the bride’, just a day dress suitable for weather that could well be hot. And nothing too short, tight, sleeveless, or frumpy!

Evidently a tall order! I’d already tried a personal shopper at John Lewis and at least one other shop, but there was nothing. Plenty of lovely things if I’d still been 39, a size 10, and happy with sleeveless, though.

I don't wear dresses very often but bought a lovely dress in a charity shop for £9.99 recently. I will have a couple of occasions to go to in the next year and it will do for at least one if those.

August 2021 to May 2022 isn’t exactly ages is it? Not a lot of time to have babies and /or split up as has been suggested.
And with the various lockdowns who’s to say the wedding wasn’t postponed to this summer anyway?

Usually threads are revitalised by spammers.
Or, someone starts giving advice on a problem someone had 10 years ago.

Apart from that though, a lot of info is still relative even on old threads.

I agree. Sometimes an old thread throws up some useful advice, even if it’s a couple of years later. Doesn’t matter if the OP has disappeared, if others find it helpful.

I agree. I’ve actually learned that Roman Originals have high street shops for a start. I thought they were just an internet company.

We went past a Debenhams today and I remarked to DH that I took part in a market research survey about 25+ years ago to find out what people thought of a certain department store coming to a nearby city. It was obviously on behalf of Debenhams.

It was years and years before it was built, opened and there it was just a few years later - closed.

All my "Best" clothing comes from Charity shops. I could not afford them if new, but people with money to spare do not want to wear the same outfits to two similar occasions where the same people will be present, so worn once and off to the charity shop they go to be found and worn by thrifty shoppers like me.

Thanks Blossoming that's the way I was thinking. I have a red bag with a bee on it, bought to go with original dress. Struggling a bit with shoes. The dress needs a bit of a heel but I haven't worn heels for ages and don't want to look like Dick Emery's Gloria - if anyone remembers those sketches. It's sad - I don't want to look like the granny at the wedding but I am that granny now.

I like red teamed with navy rosiebee. How about red shoes and a long floaty scarf looped around over your shoulder? I was being naughty and thinking of a bright poppy print scarf

Grateful it hasn't been deleted. I had dress ready for a wedding this June but when I tried it on, the look on DH's face told me everything. He blustered a bit but I just knew I wasn't going to be happy wearing it. A rather busy poppy print which I initially thought was rather jolly but now reminds me of a pair of curtains. I have a navy chiffon dress that "would do" but need to brighten it up with accessories or get another outfit. Will be looking up some of the suggestions made. Many thanks

Don’t ignore M and S! You need to look carefully on their website but there are some really lovely dresses and they come in different lengths. Also nice jackets especially as we get towards Spring. Don’t forget that things can be altered for a better fit. I would also agree about Monsoon and they have frequent offers and sales.

I wish you luck, OP! Have you looked online? I only finally found a dress online for dd’s wedding - and that was after much trawling of local shops (including using John Lewis’s personal shopper service) - there was nothing.

The do was going to be in France, in summer, so very likely hot. And it wasn’t going to be a very formal do - weather permitting, mostly out of doors. I didn’t want any typical ‘mother of the bride’ thing, and nothing short or sleeveless or very fitted.

There was absolutely nothing. In the end I found a dress on the Poetry website. I ordered two sizes since unsure, and simply sent the other back for free.

Apricot and Country Casuals have some lovely smart dresses (don’t be put off by the name) and accessories scarves etc. Boundary Mill some really well known labels good quality. I’m there a lot when we visit our daughter we spend hours there.

To be honest most of my clothes now come from EBay or a very nice charity shop in our nearest town. I've found some real gems there sometimes.

Wedding outfits especially as they tend to only get one outing! Look on eBay for items ending on bank holidays or Sundays as there is likely to be less competition.

I see Elless suggested Kaleidoscope too.

We still have House Of Fraser in our town and they have some nice brands but a lot of their space is now taken up by sports wear. T K Maxx can have some nice items but is a bit hit and miss, especially if you are a popular size. In our town we have lost Debenhams and Monsoon, apart from House Of Fraser there is only M and S and Primark for clothing. Even if I go further afield to Birmingham John Lewis has closed down and so has Debenhams which was huge with a great choice of clothing. Kaleidoscope on line has some very nice clothes suitable for a wedding.
