Short sleeve elastic too tight - how to fix?

I recently bought a lovely summer dress but the elastic in the short sleeves is very tight. (Poss due to my slight batwings.) I've heard that ironing elastic over a damp cloth will weaken the elastic a bit - is this a good idea or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

I’d be inclined to take it out and replace with some that fits comfortably round your arm. You only need to unpick about 10 stitches, depending on the width of the elastic.

If it's shirring elastic, which would be harder to replace, washing the garment and putting something into the sleeves where the elastic is to stretch it while it drys (you'd have to do it everytime) would probably do it.

Thanks Blossoming and Gaga - its shirring elastic so can't be snipped but will try the stretching idea.
