How Do You Store Your Jewellery?

Old jewellery is lovely in boxes.

Please don't store it all together or you will be devastated if burgled and some are full of memories (and all are lost).
My mother had a jewellery box and lost everything in one go.

Putting all your jewellery in one box, however beautiful the box is, becomes a burglar’s delight.

Can I just say that if your collection is the “real thing” & not costume jewellery that you take care with that lovely jewel case. IF you were burgled the perpetrator could simply lift the box and walk away.
If indeed your items are very precious, you might consider having a safe fitted. I have one & it does help peace of mind albeit I also have an intruder alarm.
Your local locksmith can probably help with a suitably sized safe & the fitting thereof. Make sure it’s big enough to take items within their boxes.
Meanwhile, if you choose to sell any items or your heirs likewise, original boxes (and certificates where appropriate) are invaluable to the provenance of an item.
Finally, if you can, may I suggest you take photos of your lovely items, in case of loss, to help insurance claims.
In your shoes, to answer your original query, I’d keep items in their boxes and alternate them into the jewel box whilst putting the other items away elsewhere out of sight & secured.

I have 1 daughter and 2 daughters-in-law. I am seriously thinking of gifting most of it to them this Christmas. Ofcourse, my daughter will get the major part. My d.I.ls will get one/two pieces each, since they will inherit most of their own mothers’ jewellery anyway.
So, to answer your question, I live alone and don’t feel I should keep my jewellery in my house.

The special pieces, which are few, are in their boxes, but the rest are in transparent pocket storage similar to these, which I hang behind my bedroom door. I can find anything at a glance.

Thank you all for the opinions. I have given the ‘family heirlooms’ to my nieces already. I have also donated quite a few things to the the Alzheimer’s Society. We’re not talking Garrard or Cartier here, btw.

Useful to have the original boxes if you are thinking of putting them into auction. They could make them more desirable for a prospective purchaser. I've sold things because of a burglary and then a street mugging. What's the point of having anything valuable if that's what happens. I was sorry to see my mother's rings go, but I found it all too worrying.

The good stuff that I don't wear permanently is in a safe but I find that I don't wear it very often as it is a lot of trouble to swap it over.

I use my jewelry box for the pieces I wear a lot because it's so visible. The box is probably worth more than the jewelry ?

The few better pieces I have, including a collection of Norwegian silver and gold enamel pieces, are in their boxes in a hanger (a bit like Shysal's) under a heavy coat in the wardrobe where they wouldn't be found quickly. Nothing I have is really expensive so I don't need a safe.

The little I have, through choice, I wear.

I have mainly costume jewellry, I have several small jewellry boxes in various drawers. I do have a number of more valuable rings, and they are kept - somewhere else entirely. I wear one or two most days.

Many years ago we had a breakin and the thief took my jewellry box. It had nothing of value in it. The insurance claim was £150. Not much, even in the late 1970s, but it contained all the little costume jewellry items a much beloved, but not well off, grandmother had given me, when I passed a music exam, or had some other small success.

The sentimental and personal value of the loss far exceeded a trivial monetary loss.
