I'm 74 and used to have good, thick hair. When I was forced to give up HRT some 12 years ago I noticed my hair was thinning. I wear it in a short bob and colour it regularly. Recently my darling granddaughter pointed out that I have a bald spot at the back! And she's right!! It's especially noticeable when my roots need seeing to. I have to backcomb the top and back of my hair now, and lacquer it to hide the spot. Getting old is a bugger!!

Oh maddy the things that children say. Our boys used to stand behind Mr. S. and give regular updates on what they called his river of baldness!!

Listened in on a beautiful conversation where a mature schoolteacher was explaining to a three year old boy why he was bald. Lovely.

Maddy
Look on the bright side, it could have been at the front ?

maddy47, you could try using Alpecin shampoo - I really panicked and immediately started researching. It was about the size of a 10p. It seems to have gone now (though that could be wishful thinking!)

I don’t know how short your bob is but because of the way I sleep my thinning short hair divides, showing too much skin. I now French plait that part of my hair before going to bed which helps to hid the division.

You can buy a spray that makes it look less thin, if you felt the need. All our hair gets thin, mine is so much thinner than it used to be. I think that's why the ladies of old had those tight short curls

I think colouring it may have made a difference but if you get a good hairdresser they should be able to cut it to cover up the problem
I m lucky my dad had a good head of hair until he died in his 90 s and I ve inherited his think hair which I wear short
I think the style you have may make all the difference talk it over with your hairdresser

I had a large bald spot a few years ago - I was slightly younger than you. Went privately to see a dermatologist, who told me it was Alopaecia Areata, and explained it was quite common at any age. He assured me my hair would grow back within a year. And true to his word, it all grew back. And btw, strangely, it was my daughter who pointed it out to me. I have dark straight hair and i think the patch is more noticeable. So don’t worry too much - it will all grow back, before you know it. I too used to backcomb it. But what helped was that dark spray I bought. It was fantastic. I don’t know how it works but once you sprayed it on, it looked like hair.

P.S. I never used to particularly, use a mirror to look at the back of my head , but trust me, since then, I always use a second mirror to scrutinise my entire scalp ?

I use BoostnBlend shake on bits to cover thinning hair. It comes in various shades, is quite dear but lasts a long time and does Not look fake, honest!!

This is what grandchildren are for. A few years ago DGD told me I have “gimassive ears”, and only recently DGS2 told me that I wasn’t a superhero, just an old man.

Aw Maddy, I also have a very honest granddaughter (6). I was told my neck was crinkly.

Some good suggestions here for thinning hair. I would resort to turtleneck sweaters for my crinkly neck if it weren't for the hot flashes - yikes!

When I worked in a library, a colleague had thinning hair. She was only in her forties.

She had a small hairpiece, on a clip, that she attached to the top of her head. I only realised when she was brushing her hair, one day, and took it off!

My twin GDs tell me I have a fat belly and my hair has gone white I love their honesty! They certainly look like me and take after me with their directness.

Tillie, aged 3, asked me what were the lines on my face. When I told her these happened when growing old, her next question was "Are you going to die soon?". Now aged 25, she was horrified when I told her about this, and thought she had been very cruel, whereas I just found her refreshingly truthful!
