Teddy Coat - should I get one?

I'm tempted to buy a teddy coat but I'm in my 70s and don't want to look like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb. I am not fat (but not thin) and try to be fairly up to date clothes-wise but would a teddy coat be a step too far? I'm fed up with my Uniqlo padded coat and jackets and would really like something different and more colourful. What do others think? Has anyone got one?

It’s clearly far from a new fashion!! (From Guardian / 2014!)

Yes, definitely . Why not . What has fashion to do with age ? If you try it on and feel and look good in it buy it.

Go for it! I’m 71 and bought. Cream one on Friday.. love it and have had many compliments..

I love your outfit but when I pictured Teddy coats I assumed the poster meant the really bulky ones...
I'm a size 8-10, so by no means fat, however, at 70 I know that the redistribution of weight for most of us means skinnier legs and a squared off body (where do our waists go?). I think that anything that adds unnecessary bulk to the top half doesn't look good on any of us. We could easily end up looking like a walking sausage roll.... And yes, I do care what I look like. If I knew that I looked like a walking sausage roll, I wouldn't feel like the confident me people see!

I am realising that those of us who are under a size 14/16 are far more conscious of looking 'daft' ! Or perceived a being fat? I was a size 14 up to my 50s then a major op rocketted me up o 18/20!!! I am still in perfect proportions and at 5'7" + I can carry it, I think we all know what suits us, just some maybe are used to being fashion followers with less imagination?. I've seen all ages in these teddy styles and all look good! I'd never let self conciousness of what others think stop me from trying something new

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Try one or two on. If you like yourself in it ,get it and enjoy wearing your new fabulous coat..

I bought a pink one from Matalan last year and love it. I’m 63.

Mutton dressed as lamb, NotTooOld? Who wants to be Mutton dressed as Mutton?

Mamma7 Sat 06-Nov-21 12:18:10

I got an inexpensive toffee coloured longish one last year, wore it loads as soft and very warm (but not in rain) Pair of brown boots and a brown felt trilby made it look even better ? Going to get it all out of the loft again soon - happy days.
I always think if we worry about looking like mutton dressed as lamb we will end up looking like mutton dressed as mutton ?‍♀️?

Gabrielle56 Sat 06-Nov-21 12:15:48

I love these too but aren't get yet another jacket/coat!!! I think that anyone and everyone can wear them , look fabulous every day (I do, well at least in my own mind!) And hang opinion! Such fun so snuggly and very reasonable too! What's not to love , they're really just a fleece that's let it's hair grow..........

Larsonsmum Sat 06-Nov-21 12:05:34

I am a UK size 4/6 and really do feel they make everyone look 2/3 sizes bigger, so personally I would not wear one . Also not very practical in wet weather - they become saturated, heavy and take forever to dry.

I bought a blue one in Asda a couple of years ago, and I love it. It is cosy too. If I like something I will buy it, within reason of course!

Thanks Milliedog. I think I have a reasonable appreciation of what I look like in various clothes and my coat looks fine. It isn’t a thick one though, so less bulk.

nipsmum Sat 06-Nov-21 11:45:58

I think if you are tall it might be okay. I'm 5ft and would look like a large dog. People would pat my head if I wore one.

Absolutely! Quite apart from the fact that I believe we should wear what we like at our age, there is nothing at all outlandish or could be considered as for the young only. It is a a classic sort of coat which I love the look of. I had never heard of Teddy coats until I saw my daughter wearing one the other day and realised that it was what I had been looking at in the Damart catalogue. I really wanted to buy it but have already spent too much on clothes recently. I liked the jacket style and, like somebody else said, thought I might wear it in the house in the winter as it would be warmer and less granny-like than a cardi.

If you have a Damart catalogue - mine was in a newspaper - it might be worth looking there. The jacket length is half price at £16 and, I think, free delivery too. I wouldn’t mind betting that is cheaper than Fat Face (I love their things too but they are a bit pricey) Online it is the normal price of £32. it might not be as good as Fat Face of course but I would definitely be trying it if I hadn’t already spent too much. I don’t remember how much the full length was - I threw the catalogue away before I was tempted - but there was a wide range of colours.

I like them and tried one on but l am average height and size 14 with a large bottom and it made me look short and dumpy so I will admire them on other people instead. If you have the figure for it then go for it. They are suitable for all ages.

Glad you went ahead NotTooOld. Enjoy your new coat!
Interesting that you had two threads by mistake and got different responses!

@dogsmother this really resonated with me...

Hold your head high and wear whatever you like really, although I’m drawing the line at some torn denims my daughter is trying to persuade me are acceptable and I should go for

My daughter said the same thing to me recently about jeans, but shut up when I pointed out that I didn't need draughty clothes, quite the opposite!

jaylucy Sat 06-Nov-21 11:20:11

If you like them, why not get one ?
I will say that many are a boxy shape so can make you look bigger and it is better to get one that is lined as they are warmer - I had one years ago when they first came out that wasn't lined down the sleeves (no idea why) and every time it was windy, the wind blew through the material!
Another alternative is a faux fur coat that whatever your age can look really elegant .

Elderlyfirsttimegran Sat 06-Nov-21 11:15:21

I’m 80 and bought one - pale blue - last winter. I wore it last night at a firework display and was warm and toasty. I’m not very slim(!) either! Don’t be put off.

In Peter Jones yesterday I had a look at teddy coats - didn't try any on as don't want one, but in the interests of research did have a feel and lifted a couple. They all seemed very lightweight and I'm not sure they'd be any good in really cold weather, or standing on a windy station platform, etc.

gilld69 Sat 06-Nov-21 11:08:45

buy it, in m and s this week I seen several older ladies in Teddy coats and they looked so trendy and beautiful, I'm 52 and I bought a teddy shacket few weeks ago thinking my dc would laugh at me but they love it, my dad even copied same coat. smile

jenpax Sat 06-Nov-21 11:07:29

I am not very thin ? but I bought a lovely brown one from Next, its warm and looks fine. I am in my 50’s and wear what I like. I dont give a fig now whether others think I look good or not. Go for it

grandtanteJE65 Sat 06-Nov-21 10:59:35

I don't think you will look like mutton dressed as lamb in a teddy coat!

I too hear my grandmother uttering that proverbial saying when I am out looking at clothes.

Try the coat on. If you hear your grandmother's voice too clearly then I am afraid you won't want to wear the coat.

If on the other hand you hear yourself saying, "I am surely old enough to wear what I want to wear." then buy it.

Does it really matter if it dates quickly? If you wear it this winter and love it, either you will go on wearing it, or you will put it aside but have the fond memory of what fun it was to own and wear.

Either way, you have had and worn the coat you want right now. Enjoy it!
