Teddy Coat - should I get one?

I'm tempted to buy a teddy coat but I'm in my 70s and don't want to look like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb. I am not fat (but not thin) and try to be fairly up to date clothes-wise but would a teddy coat be a step too far? I'm fed up with my Uniqlo padded coat and jackets and would really like something different and more colourful. What do others think? Has anyone got one?

I like the idea of a teddy coat. I'll have a look at them.

I also agree Bluebelle.

I love my teddy coats (a long one from NEXT and a long jacket from Mango). They are very cuddly and warm, so thoroughly recommend. They are also very last year/year before, so don’t worry about it, from a “fashion” point of view. This year’s fashion, if anyone cares, is the puffa coat but not shiny finish.

I ordered a teddy coat which is reversible from an on line tv channel. The fit is not good. I am a size 14/16 and this coat makes me look much larger. Lesson learnt and I am returning it.

That's strange, there are more positive comments on this thread than there are on the other one which I started by accident. Anyway, I have gone ahead and ordered the blue one from Fatface, so I will let you know how I get on! Thanks for your comments.

Sorry, but they’re just coats to me, nothing special.

I agree BlueBelle, a couple of people say they are fun. My understanding of fun is something amusing, I would not want to wear an amusing coat, preferring something that suits the weather.

Sorry to be dim but what’s fun about it it just looks like a brown top coat

I bought a dusty pink teddy coat from M and S last year - or might even have been the year before. It’s fun to wear, but not warm, so I usually wear my cashmere long cardigan underneath it.

My friend visited me this week and wore a beige teddy coat over a dress and warm opaque tights. She is 73 and looked very nice.
Go ahead NotTooOld ?

Go ahead and buy one!

They look cuddly and are washable. I have one. I cut the sleeves short and wear it a house coat to save the gas.I'd not recommend them for bitter outdoor weather as not windproof.

I have a chestnut brown one and I love it!

Sardinia2020 Wed 03-Nov-21 17:08:43

Definitely get one. They’re fun, cosy and it’s nice to feel that you’re a bit trendy.

Searched for one last year but I need one from a tall range and all I could find was the camel colour, which I don't like.

There seem to be more colour choices this year. I do like the 3/4 or shorter (Teddy Borg) ones. Tempted by a blue biker style jacket I've seen. Like you NotTooOld I fancy change. I seem to live in padded or waterproof jackets.

Go for it!

There are a few that look more like big hooded cardigans than coats, I would go for one of those as a good cardi never goes out of fashion.

I bought one in teddy brown. It is a short one because I wanted to wear it easily when driving, and the longer ones looked like a dressing gown on me. The length looks nice with trousers but not with a dress, so you might need to think how you want to wear it.

dogsmother Wed 03-Nov-21 16:00:22

Yes you should!
It will be cosy and not too ageing at all. Hold your head high and wear whatever you like really, although I’m drawing the line at some torn denims my daughter is trying to persuade me are acceptable and I should go for ?

You can get them made from recycled plastic, which would tempt me if I wasn't too much of a hot body to wear coats.

I have a couple and love them. No longer care, if I look fat! Go for it, life is too short.

sodapop Wed 03-Nov-21 15:31:05

And me recklessgran I do like them though

recklessgran Wed 03-Nov-21 15:28:14

I think they're great and if you want one you should get it. I'm afraid that I would look like a teletubby in one so I'm going to pass this time.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 03-Nov-21 15:22:45

I have seen several people in Teddy Coats and did try my daughter-in-laws on recently as admired. Made me look 2 dress sizes bigger so thought better of buying one!

Shandy57 Wed 03-Nov-21 15:21:04

I treated myself to one in the Next sale, and have only worn it once as autumn here is so wet, and I'm so used to wearing my shower resistant North Face.

A Teddy coat will “date” really quickly?
