No more clothes shopping….clothes combining!

I am starting to shed some weight and have made the decision to try not buy any new clothes for a year, with the exception of a wedding in September.

So as of today I am combining clothes I have never put together before, todays ensemble is a £12 shirt from Penny’s with my “ magic pants” £24, they go from a 12-16 are amazingly comfortable and don’t need ironing.
The shirt was for the charity shop but I’m hanging on to it now.
I think I will see my wardrobe in a new light.

Aren’t (or weren’t) combinations a sort of all in one undergarment?

Nice woolly ones in winter!

‘The new curate was quite a nice young man, but what a pity it was that his combinations showed when he sat down.’

I discovered magic pants last year from Niche online - they are super comfy and washable and I wore them nearly everyday. They can be quite dressy or casual. I got some thicker and warmer black ones for winter.

Kissngate they look great, I bet you will order in another colour!

Polly73 Thanks for the heads up although I won’t succumb!
I tend to roll mine up and down depending on my footwear!

Today I have resurrected a shirt that was designated to the back of the wardrobe as it gaped across my bust……never a good look.
Weight loss has made it fit perfectly, I’ve teamed it with my faithful Barbour jeans and my suede loafers.
These were £19.99 from TKMaxx they are a Spanish make called Manuel Verdu, they are in the childrens section as they’re for little boys really!
I have navy and sand, I bought them about 4 years ago but they still get them in from time to time.

They now do cropped magic pants - my daughter recently bought some and she says they’re great - about knee length. She bought from a local shop (London)

Thanks Sago for magic pant info received mine today from ebay 17.99. Bought Plus 1 as I'm size 16/18 smaller size definitely wouldn't have fit.

It could get a bit like aiming to eat everything in the freezer before restocking.
I’d get some odd “combinations” from mine
Pheasant and gnocchi anybody?

Sorry, I meant to quote your post, Polly73

Callistemon21 Mon 02-May-22 18:31:52

Yes

Combination undergarments, which combined chemise and drawers into one garment, first appeared in the late 1860s or early 1870s. By the 1890s, combinations had largely replaced the long chemise worn over a separate pair of drawers.

Baggs I’ve been very staid in my approach and always stuck to the same combinations, my plan is to not wear things I have paired together before.
Until I have shed all my excess weight or for 12 months I don’t want to make any more purchases.

Well, good luck with your resolution, sago! I keep telling myself I'm not going to buy any more [you name it], then I see the exact thing I've been dreaming about for yonks.... ?

Polly73 Mon 02-May-22 14:58:36

You really don’t look as if you need to lose any more weight

Combined definition - to mix together.

Kalu Mon 02-May-22 13:33:26

Yes, Baggs. When clothes shopping, which I do not enjoy, I head only for rails showing which colours suit me always in mind and I can coordinate with what is in my wardrobe, ergo, no wasted purchases. Something I learned from my granny.

Apologies. Just read some more posts.

But I thought "separates" as my gran used to call them were made for combining.

Baggs Mon 02-May-22 13:14:07

Forgive me for not really getting it, but why couldn't that shirt have been "combined" with blue trousers or a skirt before?

MawtheMerrier Mon 02-May-22 13:06:39

You surprise me - but, way to go.

Sago Mon 02-May-22 13:05:15

Maw I haven’t, I’ve just grabbed the same combinations and never been adventurous, this is really making me think and stopping what was becoming a bit of a clothes purchasing obsession.

MawtheMerrier Mon 02-May-22 12:53:03

Sago I hate to sound as if I am raining on your parade, but haven’t we all been doing this for ever ?

Sago Mon 02-May-22 12:42:51

Todays new combo!
I have had this too hanging in the wardrobe for two years, tags still on!
It didn’t seem to work with anything.
My old faithful Barbour jeans seem to team well once I added the gold Geox trainers.
The top was TK Maxx £20, trainers TKMaxx £40, Barbour jeans Outdoor and Country £110 (5 years old and still ping strong)
The monogrammed bag was a gift from Hudson Blu.
I’m really happy with this new combination, I’m so thrilled not to be buying new clothes.
This method really works.

Parsley3 Fantastic, I think you will get loads of wear from them.

Parsley3 Sun 01-May-22 19:46:12

I have just had a pair of these Italian trousers delivered and they are super comfy. I don’t do eBay but I found the same seller on Amazon Prime. Thank you all for the recommendation.

Thank you Sago and other posters for the information about the trousers. Apologies for not responding sooner but yesterday turned out to be a very busy day.
