Bar shampoo - anyone ever tried it?

I bought some bar shampoo and bar conditioner to try and reduce the plastic that comes into my house. Used it today for the first time - it did a good job.

Anyone else tried it?

At the first attempt I didn't like the feel of my hair - slightly sticky - but have persevered and it feels alright now. I like the idea of less plastic and it smells lovely. Mine was Apple Shine from My Little Echo Shop.

The Zero Waste Path one I use is a 2 in 1 and comes for several different hair types. It’s quite a small bar, but I rub it between my hands and then into my hair which I wash around 4 times a week. My last bar lasted 11 months. My hair is fine, curly with a tendency to frizz so a conditioner is definitely needed. www.peacewiththewild.co.uk/product-brands/zero-waste-path/?gclid=CjwKCAjw1ICZBhAzEiwAFfvFhDsSkgwxwkfsBqiGvFQijlFuItlnPY1fg1r_sAikV_rNt5RC0MWZixoCGJgQAvD_BwE (I get it locally)
Before I tried it I had virtually settled for Gruum, shampoo and conditioner bars separately. Like others I recommend trying them as well. www.gruum.com/?s=Shampoo+bar&post_type=product&dgwt_wcas=1

I’ve still got both left in bottle but def think I’ll give them a go when they’re ready to be replaced.

Been using some too- small brands, all made with natural products, rather than Lush - does a great job, no plastic, and fabulous for travelling too.

Used them for years. I’m in Europe for a week- with my bar that can just be in my case, not the 100ml bag thing. Win win

Yes they are brilliant and save space in suitcase when traveling

I've been using the Faith in Nature shampoo bar for the last 6 months. I got it from Holland & Barrett and I can't say that I've seen any difference in the condition of my hair, although a friend of mine recently commented that it had a lovely sheen to it. But this may be something to do with the Argan oil and serum I'm using to smooth and condition the ends with.

I'm not so keen on the Conditioner bar as I find it hard to handle and apply to my long hair. I don't think it does a very good job as the ends have become very dry and I'm having to use Argan oil or serum. I've also noticed that, instead of washing my hair every 4 days, it's looking greasy after 3 days. Is it the conditioner or the oil? I don't know, but it seems that in order to save the planet by using less plastic and parabens, I'm having to use more water and electricity to wash and dry my lanky locks.

However the bars are great for travelling. I let them dry after use and wrap each one in a muslin cloth and put them back in the little boxes they came in. I aim to buy some soap containers at some stage..

Remember there are two types - one is normal shampoo in a solid bar, the other is soap-based which will take a while for your hair to adjust to and you will need a vinegar rinse. It can make your hair feel quite dirty. I haven’t the patience so I’ll carry on using the shampoo bars. My favourites are Bounty Hunter and one from Gruum.

I use a Lush one, it's blue with green flecks in it. A quick scliff cross the hair is all I need. It cost £9 but lasts forever. I haven't yet had the bar of conditioner, but will when I next need to replenish.

I bought a bar of shampoo and conditioner in one from the pound shop recommended in a magazine or paper a little while ago, it was ace better than a famous make which cost me nearly £12 for separate bars and they didn't do as well. needless to say, l still have the more expensive bars, which l will use up.

Yes, they are good, especially the Lush ones. I have coarse hair that tends to frizz , and the Lush bars for dry hair work fine

Can anyone recommend a shampoo bar and conditioner bar for greasy hair? I thought that as I got older, after the menopause (20 years ago!) my hair would be less greasy and I could wash it just once a week, but I need to wash it every 2-3 days.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 13-Sept-22 15:40:21

It sounds as though it would take more time and be more of a faff with long hair. I’m not one to hang around in the shower. And don’t you end up with hairs wrapped round the bar?

TheMaggiejane1 Tue 13-Sept-22 15:12:53

I’ve only tried one once. My head gradually itched more and more during the day and by the evening my scalp was coming off in huge flakes. My scalp bled and stung for days. I’ve not been brave enough to try again!

I have 'silver' hair and have been using White Hot Hair products for a while... Love them.
Am now using the soap bar which is fabulous...

HannahLoisLuke Tue 13-Sept-22 15:03:07

My hair is below shoulder length and I find it easier to apply to my hair if I lather it between my hands first then rub it through my hair and scalp. In fact I’m sure that’s what was advised in the instructions.
I too remember having my hair washed with Fairy soap as a child. Even after copious rinsing it left a nasty residue which dried like dandruff. It was meant to be a household cleaning soap after all.

Callistemon21 Tue 13-Sept-22 14:59:56

Bijou Was it Fairy?

I remember my father used to use a bar of green soft soap to shampoo his hair.

Ramblingrose22 Tue 13-Sept-22 14:58:56

Sorrt to veer off topic but Vim and Ajax - I remember them well!
Can you still buy them?
Could posters please give the make of any product(s) they recommend or aren't we allowed to?

AreWeThereYet Tue 13-Sept-22 14:58:48

I bought a bar shampoo while staying in South Wales and it worked beautifully. When I got home it was a disaster, because of our very hard water. Even my usual vinegar rinse didn't sort it out very well so back to the usual.

Bijou Tue 13-Sept-22 14:46:18

Bluesmum

I used it 75 years ago when, as a very little girl, my mum used to wash my hair with a bar a green Fairy; in fact, that bar of soap was used for every cleaning task in the house from washing up to bathing!

When I was a child my mum also washed my hair with soap once a week. No hair driers then so had to sit in front of the fire or in summer in the sun.
As you say soap was used for practically every household task. All we had was Sunlight soap, Vim scouring powder, soda for washing up, Pears soap for personal use. Cannot remember using bleach.
I have always only washed my hair once a week with an olive oil shampoo and now use a leave in conditioner. Toilet soap for body wash. No shower gel.

I converted to a shampoo bar last year and am very happy with the one I use, Friendly Soap Fragrance Free, price £2.95, lasts for months.

HannahLoisLuke Tue 13-Sept-22 14:42:42

Yes, I’ve tried a few, not all are good. Some of the early ones were really difficult to rinse out. Finally I found a company called KinKind who make really good shampoo bars, conditioner not quite so good but ok. The shampoo lathers up really well in your hands and then through your hair. Makes my scalp feel really tingly and clean, rinses out well and leaves my hair soft and shiny.

We have used 'Eco Warrior' shampoo bars ( currently on offer at Waitrose) for years. They tick every box - cruelty free, vegan, SLS free - and have won many awards. They wash hair beautifully, and my only gripe is that if dropped on the shower floor when fairly well worn, they break. However, I got around that by putting the pieces into a small net bag, and rubbing that on my hair. A bar lasts far longer than a bottle of shampoo, and there is just a simple cardboard box to recycle.

I meant GRUUM.
